Lubricating the rough grounds: the case of Panag Kalangkang

PanagKalangkang is a small fishing community in Sta. Cruz, Marinduque. Viewed as rough ground, life there is an everyday struggle where, from their need to survive, people have to negotiate and adjust. In this paper, the author attempts to draw on the idea of “rough grounds” as locus theologicus and thereby contribute towards a theological methodology sourced from the praxis of the margins, where people find themselves in the midst of friction between the dominant forces of structure/system and the dearth of the ground. To better facilitate the analysis of the frictional dynamics at the ground, this paper makes use of a heuristic device that borrows fundamental ideas from the science of lubricated friction, a branch of engineering science called tribology. It has been discovered that the peculiarity of that locus has implications for theological methodology. Anecdotal narratives of the author’s field research in selected BECs in the Diocese of Boac, Marinduque are integrated to provide concrete “corporeal” structure to an otherwise theoretical abstraction

The Origins of Phenomenology in Austro-German Philosophy. Brentano, Husserl

The development of phenomenology in nineteenth‐century German philosophy is that of a particular stream within the larger historical‐philosophical complex of Austro‐German philosophy. As the “grandfather of phenomenology” resp. the “disgusted grandfather of phenomenology,” but also as the key figure on the “Anglo‐Austrian Analytic Axis”, Brentano is at the source of the two main philosophical traditions in twentieth‐century philosophy. This chapter focuses mainly on his place in nineteenth‐century European philosophy and on the central themes and concepts in his philosophy that were determinant in the development of the philosophy of his most gifted student: Edmund Husserl. Despite the variety of stances which Brentano expressed on ontology, metaphysics, and psychology over the course of his career, the five general principles remain central to his whole philosophy throughout: they have an important place in what could be called Brentano's philosophical worldview or system. Constitutional Conflict and the Development of Canadian Aboriginal Law

This paper argues that aboriginal rights in Canada have been greatly affected by 19 th century governmental and social conflicts within the Canadian colonial state. These conflicts, largely over the ownership of land and regulatory authority between the federal government and the provinces necessarily impacted the First Nations on the ground while affecting how their legal claims were recognized and implemented. In particular they impacted the legal efficacy of treaty rights, the scope of rights recognised by the courts and an expansive legally protected notion of indigenous sovereignty. As a result, the rights now protected under sec. 25 and 35 of the Constitution Act 1982 are more restricted than the text might imply

Effects of Relative Prices on Contributions to the Level and Growth of Real GDP

Existing procedures for GDP in chained or in constant prices ignore relative prices – ratios of industry GDP deflators to the economy’s GDP deflator – and, consequently, yield economically misleading results by understating (overstating) level contributions of industries with above (below) average relative prices, at the same time understating (overstating) growth contributions of industries with rising (falling) relative prices. These are illustrated by US GDP in chained prices and Philippine GDP in constant prices. However, the above misleading results could be mitigated by this paper’s general formulas for level and growth contributions applied to the same GDP. While allowing for differences and changes in relative prices, these general formulas encompass existing formulas as special cases of constant relative prices. In principle, relative prices convert real GDP of industries to the same (i.e., homogeneous) units so that they can be added to equal (i.e., additive) aggregate real GDP. Without relative prices – and, therefore, no homogeneity and no additivity – industry contributions to the level and growth of aggregate real GDP are questionable
