    Self-stabilizing routing protocols

    In systems made up of processors and links connecting the processors, the global state of the system is defined by the local variables of the individual processors. The set of global states can be defined as being either legal or illegal. A self-stabilizing system is one that forces a system from an illegal state to a global legal state without external interference, using a finite number of steps. This thesis will concentrate on application of self-stabilization to routing problems, in particular path identification, connectivity and methods involved in destinational routing. Traditional methods for creation of rooted paths to multiple destinations in a computer network involve the creation of spanning trees, and broadcasting information on the tree to be picked up by the individual nodes on the tree. The information for the creation of the tree are all sourced at the root, and the individual nodes update information from the centralized source. The self-stabilization model for networks allows the decision for a creation of a tree and message checking to occur automatically, locally, and more important, in contrast to traditional networks, asynchronously. The creation, message passing occur with a node and its immediate neighbor, and the tree, path is created based on this communicated data. In addition, the self-stabilization model eliminates the requisite initialization of traditional networks, i.e. given any arbitrary initial state the system (a given network) is guaranteed to stabilize to a legal global state, in the case of a broadcast network, a minimal spanning tree rooted at a source

    Distributed Connectivity Decomposition

    We present time-efficient distributed algorithms for decomposing graphs with large edge or vertex connectivity into multiple spanning or dominating trees, respectively. As their primary applications, these decompositions allow us to achieve information flow with size close to the connectivity by parallelizing it along the trees. More specifically, our distributed decomposition algorithms are as follows: (I) A decomposition of each undirected graph with vertex-connectivity kk into (fractionally) vertex-disjoint weighted dominating trees with total weight Ω(klogn)\Omega(\frac{k}{\log n}), in O~(D+n)\widetilde{O}(D+\sqrt{n}) rounds. (II) A decomposition of each undirected graph with edge-connectivity λ\lambda into (fractionally) edge-disjoint weighted spanning trees with total weight λ12(1ε)\lceil\frac{\lambda-1}{2}\rceil(1-\varepsilon), in O~(D+nλ)\widetilde{O}(D+\sqrt{n\lambda}) rounds. We also show round complexity lower bounds of Ω~(D+nk)\tilde{\Omega}(D+\sqrt{\frac{n}{k}}) and Ω~(D+nλ)\tilde{\Omega}(D+\sqrt{\frac{n}{\lambda}}) for the above two decompositions, using techniques of [Das Sarma et al., STOC'11]. Moreover, our vertex-connectivity decomposition extends to centralized algorithms and improves the time complexity of [Censor-Hillel et al., SODA'14] from O(n3)O(n^3) to near-optimal O~(m)\tilde{O}(m). As corollaries, we also get distributed oblivious routing broadcast with O(1)O(1)-competitive edge-congestion and O(logn)O(\log n)-competitive vertex-congestion. Furthermore, the vertex connectivity decomposition leads to near-time-optimal O(logn)O(\log n)-approximation of vertex connectivity: centralized O~(m)\widetilde{O}(m) and distributed O~(D+n)\tilde{O}(D+\sqrt{n}). The former moves toward the 1974 conjecture of Aho, Hopcroft, and Ullman postulating an O(m)O(m) centralized exact algorithm while the latter is the first distributed vertex connectivity approximation

    On the probabilistic min spanning tree Problem

    We study a probabilistic optimization model for min spanning tree, where any vertex vi of the input-graph G(V,E) has some presence probability pi in the final instance G′ ⊂ G that will effectively be optimized. Suppose that when this “real” instance G′ becomes known, a spanning tree T, called anticipatory or a priori spanning tree, has already been computed in G and one can run a quick algorithm (quicker than one that recomputes from scratch), called modification strategy, that modifies the anticipatory tree T in order to fit G ′. The goal is to compute an anticipatory spanning tree of G such that, its modification for any G ′ ⊆ G is optimal for G ′. This is what we call probabilistic min spanning tree problem. In this paper we study complexity and approximation of probabilistic min spanning tree in complete graphs under two distinct modification strategies leading to different complexity results for the problem. For the first of the strategies developed, we also study two natural subproblems of probabilistic min spanning tree, namely, the probabilistic metric min spanning tree and the probabilistic min spanning tree 1,2 that deal with metric complete graphs and complete graphs with edge-weights either 1, or 2, respectively

    Parameterized Complexity of Finding a Spanning Tree with Minimum Reload Cost Diameter

    We study the minimum diameter spanning tree problem under the reload cost model (DIAMETER-TREE for short) introduced by Wirth and Steffan (2001). In this problem, given an undirected edge-colored graph G, reload costs on a path arise at a node where the path uses consecutive edges of different colors. The objective is to find a spanning tree of G of minimum diameter with respect to the reload costs. We initiate a systematic study of the parameterized complexity of the DIAMETER-TREE problem by considering the following parameters: the cost of a solution, and the treewidth and the maximum degree Delta of the input graph. We prove that DIAMETER-TREE is para-np-hard for any combination of two of these three parameters, and that it is FPT parameterized by the three of them. We also prove that the problem can be solved in polynomial time on cactus graphs. This result is somehow surprising since we prove DIAMETER-TREE to be NP-hard on graphs of treewidth two, which is best possible as the problem can be trivially solved on forests. When the reload costs satisfy the triangle inequality, Wirth and Steffan (2001) proved that the problem can be solved in polynomial time on graphs with Delta=3, and Galbiati (2008) proved that it is NP-hard if Delta=4. Our results show, in particular, that without the requirement of the triangle inequality, the problem is NP-hard if Delta=3, which is also best possible. Finally, in the case where the reload costs are polynomially bounded by the size of the input graph, we prove that DIAMETER-TREE is in XP and W[1]-hard parameterized by the treewidth plus Delta

    On Efficient Distributed Construction of Near Optimal Routing Schemes

    Given a distributed network represented by a weighted undirected graph G=(V,E)G=(V,E) on nn vertices, and a parameter kk, we devise a distributed algorithm that computes a routing scheme in (n1/2+1/k+D)no(1)(n^{1/2+1/k}+D)\cdot n^{o(1)} rounds, where DD is the hop-diameter of the network. The running time matches the lower bound of Ω~(n1/2+D)\tilde{\Omega}(n^{1/2}+D) rounds (which holds for any scheme with polynomial stretch), up to lower order terms. The routing tables are of size O~(n1/k)\tilde{O}(n^{1/k}), the labels are of size O(klog2n)O(k\log^2n), and every packet is routed on a path suffering stretch at most 4k5+o(1)4k-5+o(1). Our construction nearly matches the state-of-the-art for routing schemes built in a centralized sequential manner. The previous best algorithms for building routing tables in a distributed small messages model were by \cite[STOC 2013]{LP13} and \cite[PODC 2015]{LP15}. The former has similar properties but suffers from substantially larger routing tables of size O(n1/2+1/k)O(n^{1/2+1/k}), while the latter has sub-optimal running time of O~(min{(nD)1/2n1/k,n2/3+2/(3k)+D})\tilde{O}(\min\{(nD)^{1/2}\cdot n^{1/k},n^{2/3+2/(3k)}+D\})

    Multiple-Edge-Fault-Tolerant Approximate Shortest-Path Trees

    Let GG be an nn-node and mm-edge positively real-weighted undirected graph. For any given integer f1f \ge 1, we study the problem of designing a sparse \emph{f-edge-fault-tolerant} (ff-EFT) σ\sigma{\em -approximate single-source shortest-path tree} (σ\sigma-ASPT), namely a subgraph of GG having as few edges as possible and which, following the failure of a set FF of at most ff edges in GG, contains paths from a fixed source that are stretched at most by a factor of σ\sigma. To this respect, we provide an algorithm that efficiently computes an ff-EFT (2F+1)(2|F|+1)-ASPT of size O(fn)O(f n). Our structure improves on a previous related construction designed for \emph{unweighted} graphs, having the same size but guaranteeing a larger stretch factor of 3(f+1)3(f+1), plus an additive term of (f+1)logn(f+1) \log n. Then, we show how to convert our structure into an efficient ff-EFT \emph{single-source distance oracle} (SSDO), that can be built in O~(fm)\widetilde{O}(f m) time, has size O(fnlog2n)O(fn \log^2 n), and is able to report, after the failure of the edge set FF, in O(F2log2n)O(|F|^2 \log^2 n) time a (2F+1)(2|F|+1)-approximate distance from the source to any node, and a corresponding approximate path in the same amount of time plus the path's size. Such an oracle is obtained by handling another fundamental problem, namely that of updating a \emph{minimum spanning forest} (MSF) of GG after that a \emph{batch} of kk simultaneous edge modifications (i.e., edge insertions, deletions and weight changes) is performed. For this problem, we build in O(mlog3n)O(m \log^3 n) time a \emph{sensitivity} oracle of size O(mlog2n)O(m \log^2 n), that reports in O(k2log2n)O(k^2 \log^2 n) time the (at most 2k2k) edges either exiting from or entering into the MSF.
