Explaining Aviation Safety Incidents Using Deep Temporal Multiple Instance Learning
Although aviation accidents are rare, safety incidents occur more frequently
and require a careful analysis to detect and mitigate risks in a timely manner.
Analyzing safety incidents using operational data and producing event-based
explanations is invaluable to airline companies as well as to governing
organizations such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the United
States. However, this task is challenging because of the complexity involved in
mining multi-dimensional heterogeneous time series data, the lack of
time-step-wise annotation of events in a flight, and the lack of scalable tools
to perform analysis over a large number of events. In this work, we propose a
precursor mining algorithm that identifies events in the multidimensional time
series that are correlated with the safety incident. Precursors are valuable to
systems health and safety monitoring and in explaining and forecasting safety
incidents. Current methods suffer from poor scalability to high dimensional
time series data and are inefficient in capturing temporal behavior. We propose
an approach by combining multiple-instance learning (MIL) and deep recurrent
neural networks (DRNN) to take advantage of MIL's ability to learn using weakly
supervised data and DRNN's ability to model temporal behavior. We describe the
algorithm, the data, the intuition behind taking a MIL approach, and a
comparative analysis of the proposed algorithm with baseline models. We also
discuss the application to a real-world aviation safety problem using data from
a commercial airline company and discuss the model's abilities and
shortcomings, with some final remarks about possible deployment directions
Unfolding the procedure of characterizing recorded ultra low frequency, kHZ and MHz electromagetic anomalies prior to the L'Aquila earthquake as pre-seismic ones. Part I
Ultra low frequency, kHz and MHz electromagnetic anomalies were recorded
prior to the L'Aquila catastrophic earthquake that occurred on April 6, 2009.
The main aims of this contribution are: (i) To suggest a procedure for the
designation of detected EM anomalies as seismogenic ones. We do not expect to
be possible to provide a succinct and solid definition of a pre-seismic EM
emission. Instead, we attempt, through a multidisciplinary analysis, to provide
elements of a definition. (ii) To link the detected MHz and kHz EM anomalies
with equivalent last stages of the L'Aquila earthquake preparation process.
(iii) To put forward physically meaningful arguments to support a way of
quantifying the time to global failure and the identification of distinguishing
features beyond which the evolution towards global failure becomes
irreversible. The whole effort is unfolded in two consecutive parts. We clarify
we try to specify not only whether or not a single EM anomaly is pre-seismic in
itself, but mainly whether a combination of kHz, MHz, and ULF EM anomalies can
be characterized as pre-seismic one
Infant and parental pathways to preschool cognitive competence
In a longitudinal study, 62 parent‐child dyads were seen during the second year of life and at 4 years of age. At 12 months, measures included parental sensitive responsiveness during free play, knowledge of cognitive‐communicative development in infancy, and level of exploration and disinhibitedness of the infant. At 16 and at 20 months, parental responsiveness and directiveness and infant task mastery behaviour were assessed in constructive play. Quality of verbal guidance of the parent was assessed in a joint attention situation. At 48 months of age, the McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities were administered at home, together with dyadic tasks. A path analysis revealed a model in which both verbal abilities and perceptual performance outcome measures were well predicted by the quality of parental verbal guidance in the second year. The latter measure was shown to be independent of the socioeconomic status of parents in the group, but was significantly related with knowledge of infant cognitive‐communicative development. Of the measures at the outset of the second year, only socioeconomic status remained as having a direct path at pre‐school age. The consistency of the model with other empirical findings underscores parental verbal scaffolding as an important shaper of cognitive development
Sudden drop of fractal dimension of electromagnetic emissions recorded prior to significant earthquake
The variation of fractal dimension and entropy during a damage evolution
process, especially approaching critical failure, has been recently
investigated. A sudden drop of fractal dimension has been proposed as a
quantitative indicator of damage localization or a likely precursor of an
impending catastrophic failure. In this contribution, electromagnetic emissions
recorded prior to significant earthquake are analysed to investigate whether
they also present such sudden fractal dimension and entropy drops as the main
catastrophic event is approaching. The pre-earthquake electromagnetic time
series analysis results reveal a good agreement to the theoretically expected
ones indicating that the critical fracture is approaching
Artificial Neural Network to predict mean monthly total ozone in Arosa, Switzerland
Present study deals with the mean monthly total ozone time series over Arosa,
Switzerland. The study period is 1932-1971. First of all, the total ozone time
series has been identified as a complex system and then Artificial Neural
Networks models in the form of Multilayer Perceptron with back propagation
learning have been developed. The models are Single-hidden-layer and
Two-hidden-layer Perceptrons with sigmoid activation function. After sequential
learning with learning rate 0.9 the peak total ozone period (February-May)
concentrations of mean monthly total ozone have been predicted by the two
neural net models. After training and validation, both of the models are found
skillful. But, Two-hidden-layer Perceptron is found to be more adroit in
predicting the mean monthly total ozone concentrations over the aforesaid

Preschool predictors of mathematics in first grade children with autism spectrum disorder
AbstractUp till now, research evidence on the mathematical abilities of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been scarce and provided mixed results. The current study examined the predictive value of five early numerical competencies for four domains of mathematics in first grade. Thirty-three high-functioning children with ASD were followed up from preschool to first grade and compared with 54 typically developing children, as well as with normed samples in first grade. Five early numerical competencies were tested in preschool (5–6 years): verbal subitizing, counting, magnitude comparison, estimation, and arithmetic operations. Four domains of mathematics were used as outcome variables in first grade (6–7 years): procedural calculation, number fact retrieval, word/language problems, and time-related competences. Children with ASD showed similar early numerical competencies at preschool age as typically developing children. Moreover, they scored average on number fact retrieval and time-related competences and higher on procedural calculation and word/language problems compared to the normed population in first grade. When predicting first grade mathematics performance in children with ASD, both verbal subitizing and counting seemed to be important to evaluate at preschool age. Verbal subitizing had a higher predictive value in children with ASD than in typically developing children. Whereas verbal subitizing was predictive for procedural calculation, number fact retrieval, and word/language problems, counting was predictive for procedural calculation and, to a lesser extent, number fact retrieval.
