    Deliverable DJRA1.3: Tool prototype for creating and stitching multiple network resources for virtual infrastructures

    This document describes the prototype FEDERICA Slice Tool developed for the virtualization of network elements in FEDERICA and for creating and stitching network resources over this virtual infrastructure. An SNMP-based resource discovery prototype is also introduced as a new functionality to be integrated in the tool.The deliverable also presents aviability study for the use of traffic prioritization in the FEDERICA infrastructure and some network performance measurements on a real slice within FEDERICA.This document reports the final results of JRA1.2 Activity in the development of a tool prototype for creating sets ofvirtual resourcesinFEDERICA.The prototype goal is to simplify and automate part of the work for NOC.The tool may also serve,with different privileges, a FEDERICA user to operate on his/her slice. The tool described here was designed with the objective of providing an interactive application with a graphical interface to operate on resources for the NOC and the end users (researchers). The tool simplify the creation and configuration of resources in a slice and it is a mandatory step to ensure scalability of the NOC effort. It offers an interactive Graphical User Interface that translates the users’ actions to commands in the substrate (networknodesandV-nodes)andslice elements(VirtualMachines).User accounts may be created for the NOC and for researchers, each with specific privileges to enable different sets of capabilities. The NOC account has full access to all the resources in the substrate, while each user’account has full access only to the virtual resources in his/her slice. The tool has been developed using the Java programming language as Open Source code and relies on the open source Globus® Toolkit. Testing has been performed in a laboratory environment and on some FEDERICA substrate equipment (1switch, 2VMwareServers) in their standard configuration.     An Architecture for QoS-capable Integrated Security Gateway to Protect Avionic Data Network

    International audienceWhile the use of Internet Protocol (IP) in aviation allows new applications and benefits, it opens the doors for security risks and attacks. Many security mechanisms and solutions have evolved to mitigate the ever continuously increasing number of network attacks. Although these conventional solutions have solved some security problems, they also leave some security holes. Securing open and complex systems have become more and more complicated and obviously, the dependence on a single security mechanism gives a false sense of security while opening the doors for attackers. Hence, to ensure secure networks, several security mechanisms must work together in a harmonic multi-layered way. In addition, if we take QoS requirements into account, the problem becomes more complicated and necessitates in-depth reflexions. In this paper, we present the architecture of our QoS-capable integrated security gateway: a gateway that highly integrates well chosen technologies in the area of network security as well as QoS mechanisms to provide the strongest level of security for avionic data network; our main aim is to provide both multi-layered security and stable performances for critical network applications

    Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), a path vector routing protocol, is a widespread exterior gateway protocol (EGP) in the internet. Extensive deployment of the new technologies in internet, protocols need to have continuous improvements in its behavior and operations. New routing technologies conserve a top level of service availability. Hence, due to topological changes, BGP needs to achieve a fast network convergence. Now a days size of the network growing very rapidly. To maintain the high scalability in the network BGP needs to avoid instability. The instability and failures may cause the network into an unstable state, which significantly increases the network convergence time. This paper summarizes the various approaches like BGP policies, instability, and fault detection etc. to improve the convergence time of BGP

    Managing Bandwidth and Traffic via Bundling and Filtration in Large-Scale Distributed Simulations

    Research has shown that bandwidth can be a limiting factor in the performance of distributed simulations. The Air Force\u27s Distributed Mission Operations Center (DMOC) periodically hosts one of the largest distributed simulation events in the world. The engineers at the DMOC have dealt with the difficult problem of limited bandwidth by implementing application level filters that process all DIS PDUs between the various networks connected to the exercise. This thesis examines their implemented filter and proposes: adaptive range-based filtering and bundling together of PDUs. The goals are to reduce the number of PDUs passed by the adaptive filter and to reduce network overhead and the total amount of data transferred by maximizing packet size up to the MTU. The proposed changes were implemented and logged data from previous events were used on a test network in order to measure the improvement from the base filter to the improved filter. The results showed that the adaptive range based filter was effective, though minimally so, and that the PDU bundling resulted in a reduction of 17% to 20% of the total traffic transmitted across the network
