    Hydrodynamic loads simulation for 3D bluff bodies by usin the vortex loops based modification of the vortex particle method

    The modification of vortex method is developed which is based on closed vortex loops usage for calculation of unsteady aerodynamic loads acting on bluff bodies. It is shown that such approach has number of advantages for vortex wakes evolution simulation after bluff bodies. Each vortex loop can be considered as the separate vortex “superelement”, which doesn’t generate any additional vorticity. The loops generation algorithm permits to simulate the separation zone due to the self-organization of the loops. The obtained results are in satisfactory agreement with known experimental data

    Smoke Rings from Smoke

    We give an algorithm which extracts vortex filaments (“smoke rings”) from a given 3D velocity field. Given a filament strength h> 0, an optimal number of vortex filaments, together with their extent and placement, is given by the zero set of a complex valued function over the domain. This function is the global minimizer of a quadratic energy based on a Schrödinger operator. Computationally this amounts to finding the eigenvector belonging to the smallest eigenvalue of a Laplacian type sparse matrix. Turning traditional vector field representations of flows, for example, on a regular grid, into a corresponding set of vortex filaments is useful for visualization, analysis of measured flows, hybrid simulation methods, and sparse representations.     Research paper is devoted to the description of a new modification of the algorithm for calculating the vortex filaments motion. The results of methodological studies showing that this algorithm can correctly simulate the elongation, shortening, bending and reconnection of vortex filaments, as well as known qualitative phenomena arising from the vortex rings interaction are given. Particular attention is paid to the repetition of the calculation recently investigated experimentally the evolution of bound vortices. It is shown that with the developed algorithm can be steadily modeled complex vortex loops evolution. The main advantage of the new algorithm is stability and high-speed computing.Статья посвящена описанию новой модификации алгоритма расчета движения вихревых нитей. Представлены результаты методических исследований, показывающие, что данный алгоритм позволяет корректно моделировать растяжение, сжатие, изгиб и перезамыкание вихревых нитей, а также известные качественные явления, возникающие при взаимодействии вихревых колец. Особое внимание уделено повторению в расчете недавно исследованной экспериментально эволюции переплетенных вихрей. Показано, что с помощью разработанного алгоритма могут быть устойчиво смоделированы сложные эволюции вихревых петель. Главное достоинство нового алгоритма - устойчивость и высокая скорость вычислений

    This paper presents a liquid simulation technique that enforces the incompressibility condition using a stream function solve instead of a pressure projection. Previous methods have used stream function techniques for the simulation of detailed single-phase flows, but a formulation for liquid simulation has proved elusive in part due to the free surface boundary conditions. In this paper, we introduce a stream function approach to liquid simulations with novel boundary conditions for free surfaces, solid obstacles, and solid-fluid coupling. Although our approach increases the dimension of the linear system necessary to enforce incompressibility, it provides interesting and surprising benefits. First, the resulting flow is guaranteed to be divergence-free regardless of the accuracy of the solve. Second, our free-surface boundary conditions guarantee divergence-free motion even in the un-simulated air phase, which enables two-phase flow simulation by only computing a single phase. We implemented this method using a variant of FLIP simulation which only samples particles within a narrow band of the liquid surface, and we illustrate the effectiveness of our method for detailed two-phase flow simulations with complex boundaries, detailed bubble interactions, and two-way solid-fluid coupling

    Dynamics of a class of vortex rings

    The contour dynamics method is extended to vortex rings with vorticity varying linearly from the symmetry axis. An elliptic core model is also developed to explain some of the basic physics. Passage and collisions of two identical rings are studied focusing on core deformation, sound generation and stirring of fluid elements. With respect to core deformation, not only the strain rate but how rapidly it varies is important and accounts for greater susceptibility to vortex tearing than in two dimensions. For slow strain, as a passage interaction is completed and the strain relaxes, the cores return to their original shape while permanent deformations remain for rapidly varying strain. For collisions, if the strain changes slowly the core shapes migrate through a known family of two-dimensional steady vortex pairs up to the limiting member of the family. Thereafter energy conservation does not allow the cores to maintain a constant shape. For rapidly varying strain, core deformation is severe and a head-tail structure in good agreement with experiments is formed. With respect to sound generation, good agreement with the measured acoustic signal for colliding rings is obtained and a feature previously thought to be due to viscous effects is shown to be an effect of inviscid core deformation alone. For passage interactions, a component of high frequency is present. Evidence for the importance of this noise source in jet noise spectra is provided. Finally, processes of fluid engulfment and rejection for an unsteady vortex ring are studied using the stable and unstable manifolds. The unstable manifold shows excellent agreement with flow visualization experiments for leapfrogging rings suggesting that it may be a good tool for numerical flow visualization in other time periodic flows

    Turbulent Details Simulation for SPH Fluids via Vorticity Refinement

    A major issue in Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) approaches is the numerical dissipation during the projection process, especially under coarse discretizations. High-frequency details, such as turbulence and vortices, are smoothed out, leading to unrealistic results. To address this issue, we introduce a Vorticity Refinement (VR) solver for SPH fluids with negligible computational overhead. In this method, the numerical dissipation of the vorticity field is recovered by the difference between the theoretical and the actual vorticity, so as to enhance turbulence details. Instead of solving the Biot-Savart integrals, a stream function, which is easier and more efficient to solve, is used to relate the vorticity field to the velocity field. We obtain turbulence effects of different intensity levels by changing an adjustable parameter. Since the vorticity field is enhanced according to the curl field, our method can not only amplify existing vortices, but also capture additional turbulence. Our VR solver is straightforward to implement and can be easily integrated into existing SPH methods

Acm Transactions on Graphics, 34(4), 149. https://doi.org/10.1145/2767003Simulating the delightful dynamics of soap films, bubbles, and foams has traditionally required the use of a fully three-dimensional many-phase Navier-Stokes solver, even though their visual appearance is completely dominated by the thin liquid surface. We depart from earlier work on soap bubbles and foams by noting that their dynamics are naturally described by a Lagrangian vortex sheet model in which circulation is the primary variable. This leads us to derive a novel circulation-preserving surface-only discretization of foam dynamics driven by surface tension on a non-manifold triangle mesh. We represent the surface using a mesh-based multimaterial surface tracker which supports complex bubble topology changes, and evolve the surface according to the ambient air flow induced by a scalar circulation field stored on the mesh. Surface tension forces give rise to a simple update rule for circulation, even at non-manifold Plateau borders, based on a discrete measure of signed scalar mean curvature. We further incorporate vertex constraints to enable the interaction of soap films with wires.
