Sequential Recommendation with Self-Attentive Multi-Adversarial Network
Recently, deep learning has made significant progress in the task of
sequential recommendation. Existing neural sequential recommenders typically
adopt a generative way trained with Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE). When
context information (called factor) is involved, it is difficult to analyze
when and how each individual factor would affect the final recommendation
performance. For this purpose, we take a new perspective and introduce
adversarial learning to sequential recommendation. In this paper, we present a
Multi-Factor Generative Adversarial Network (MFGAN) for explicitly modeling the
effect of context information on sequential recommendation. Specifically, our
proposed MFGAN has two kinds of modules: a Transformer-based generator taking
user behavior sequences as input to recommend the possible next items, and
multiple factor-specific discriminators to evaluate the generated sub-sequence
from the perspectives of different factors. To learn the parameters, we adopt
the classic policy gradient method, and utilize the reward signal of
discriminators for guiding the learning of the generator. Our framework is
flexible to incorporate multiple kinds of factor information, and is able to
trace how each factor contributes to the recommendation decision over time.
Extensive experiments conducted on three real-world datasets demonstrate the
superiority of our proposed model over the state-of-the-art methods, in terms
of effectiveness and interpretability
Deep Learning based Recommender System: A Survey and New Perspectives
With the ever-growing volume of online information, recommender systems have
been an effective strategy to overcome such information overload. The utility
of recommender systems cannot be overstated, given its widespread adoption in
many web applications, along with its potential impact to ameliorate many
problems related to over-choice. In recent years, deep learning has garnered
considerable interest in many research fields such as computer vision and
natural language processing, owing not only to stellar performance but also the
attractive property of learning feature representations from scratch. The
influence of deep learning is also pervasive, recently demonstrating its
effectiveness when applied to information retrieval and recommender systems
research. Evidently, the field of deep learning in recommender system is
flourishing. This article aims to provide a comprehensive review of recent
research efforts on deep learning based recommender systems. More concretely,
we provide and devise a taxonomy of deep learning based recommendation models,
along with providing a comprehensive summary of the state-of-the-art. Finally,
we expand on current trends and provide new perspectives pertaining to this new
exciting development of the field.Comment: The paper has been accepted by ACM Computing Surveys.

BERT4Loc: BERT for Location -- POI Recommender System
Recommending points of interest is a difficult problem that requires precise
location information to be extracted from a location-based social media
platform. Another challenging and critical problem for such a location-aware
recommendation system is modelling users' preferences based on their historical
behaviors. We propose a location-aware recommender system based on
Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers for the purpose of
providing users with location-based recommendations. The proposed model
incorporates location data and user preferences. When compared to predicting
the next item of interest (location) at each position in a sequence, our model
can provide the user with more relevant results. Extensive experiments on a
benchmark dataset demonstrate that our model consistently outperforms a variety
of state-of-the-art sequential models
AutoMLP: Automated MLP for Sequential Recommendations
Sequential recommender systems aim to predict users' next interested item
given their historical interactions. However, a long-standing issue is how to
distinguish between users' long/short-term interests, which may be
heterogeneous and contribute differently to the next recommendation. Existing
approaches usually set pre-defined short-term interest length by exhaustive
search or empirical experience, which is either highly inefficient or yields
subpar results. The recent advanced transformer-based models can achieve
state-of-the-art performances despite the aforementioned issue, but they have a
quadratic computational complexity to the length of the input sequence. To this
end, this paper proposes a novel sequential recommender system, AutoMLP, aiming
for better modeling users' long/short-term interests from their historical
interactions. In addition, we design an automated and adaptive search algorithm
for preferable short-term interest length via end-to-end optimization. Through
extensive experiments, we show that AutoMLP has competitive performance against
state-of-the-art methods, while maintaining linear computational complexity.Comment: Accepted by WWW'2
A Review of Data Mining in Personalized Education: Current Trends and Future Prospects
Personalized education, tailored to individual student needs, leverages
educational technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in the digital age to
enhance learning effectiveness. The integration of AI in educational platforms
provides insights into academic performance, learning preferences, and
behaviors, optimizing the personal learning process. Driven by data mining
techniques, it not only benefits students but also provides educators and
institutions with tools to craft customized learning experiences. To offer a
comprehensive review of recent advancements in personalized educational data
mining, this paper focuses on four primary scenarios: educational
recommendation, cognitive diagnosis, knowledge tracing, and learning analysis.
This paper presents a structured taxonomy for each area, compiles commonly used
datasets, and identifies future research directions, emphasizing the role of
data mining in enhancing personalized education and paving the way for future
exploration and innovation.Comment: 25 pages, 5 figure
Signed Distance-based Deep Memory Recommender
Personalized recommendation algorithms learn a user's preference for an item
by measuring a distance/similarity between them. However, some of the existing
recommendation models (e.g., matrix factorization) assume a linear relationship
between the user and item. This approach limits the capacity of recommender
systems, since the interactions between users and items in real-world
applications are much more complex than the linear relationship. To overcome
this limitation, in this paper, we design and propose a deep learning framework
called Signed Distance-based Deep Memory Recommender, which captures non-linear
relationships between users and items explicitly and implicitly, and work well
in both general recommendation task and shopping basket-based recommendation
task. Through an extensive empirical study on six real-world datasets in the
two recommendation tasks, our proposed approach achieved significant
improvement over ten state-of-the-art recommendation models
