Blogs as a Means of Preservation Selection for the World Wide Web
Currently, there is not a strong system of selection in place when looking at preserving content on the Web. This study is an examination of the blogging community for the possibility of utilizing the decentralized and distributed nature of link selection that takes place within the community as a means of preservation selection. The purpose of this study is to compare the blog aggregators, Daypop, Blogdex, and BlogPulse, for their ability to collect content which is of archival quality. This study analyzes the content selected by these aggregators to determine if any content which is linked to most frequently for a given day is of archival quality. Archival quality is determined by comparing the content from the aggregator lists to criteria assembled for the study from a variety of archival policies and principles
Making the Most of Tweet-Inherent Features for Social Spam Detection on Twitter
Social spam produces a great amount of noise on social media services such as
Twitter, which reduces the signal-to-noise ratio that both end users and data
mining applications observe. Existing techniques on social spam detection have
focused primarily on the identification of spam accounts by using extensive
historical and network-based data. In this paper we focus on the detection of
spam tweets, which optimises the amount of data that needs to be gathered by
relying only on tweet-inherent features. This enables the application of the
spam detection system to a large set of tweets in a timely fashion, potentially
applicable in a real-time or near real-time setting. Using two large
hand-labelled datasets of tweets containing spam, we study the suitability of
five classification algorithms and four different feature sets to the social
spam detection task. Our results show that, by using the limited set of
features readily available in a tweet, we can achieve encouraging results which
are competitive when compared against existing spammer detection systems that
make use of additional, costly user features. Our study is the first that
attempts at generalising conclusions on the optimal classifiers and sets of
features for social spam detection over different datasets
Information Extraction in Illicit Domains
Extracting useful entities and attribute values from illicit domains such as
human trafficking is a challenging problem with the potential for widespread
social impact. Such domains employ atypical language models, have `long tails'
and suffer from the problem of concept drift. In this paper, we propose a
lightweight, feature-agnostic Information Extraction (IE) paradigm specifically
designed for such domains. Our approach uses raw, unlabeled text from an
initial corpus, and a few (12-120) seed annotations per domain-specific
attribute, to learn robust IE models for unobserved pages and websites.
Empirically, we demonstrate that our approach can outperform feature-centric
Conditional Random Field baselines by over 18\% F-Measure on five annotated
sets of real-world human trafficking datasets in both low-supervision and
high-supervision settings. We also show that our approach is demonstrably
robust to concept drift, and can be efficiently bootstrapped even in a serial

Multimodal Classification of Urban Micro-Events
In this paper we seek methods to effectively detect urban micro-events. Urban
micro-events are events which occur in cities, have limited geographical
coverage and typically affect only a small group of citizens. Because of their
scale these are difficult to identify in most data sources. However, by using
citizen sensing to gather data, detecting them becomes feasible. The data
gathered by citizen sensing is often multimodal and, as a consequence, the
information required to detect urban micro-events is distributed over multiple
modalities. This makes it essential to have a classifier capable of combining
them. In this paper we explore several methods of creating such a classifier,
including early, late, hybrid fusion and representation learning using
multimodal graphs. We evaluate performance on a real world dataset obtained
from a live citizen reporting system. We show that a multimodal approach yields
higher performance than unimodal alternatives. Furthermore, we demonstrate that
our hybrid combination of early and late fusion with multimodal embeddings
performs best in classification of urban micro-events
