Misdirect Movies is a curated touring exhibition exploring new possibilities of collage, employing material gleaned from cinema. With access to digital formats, artists are now able to appropriate films to create different and innovative approaches to collage. This builds upon research disseminated in artworks such as The Jump and Frames and the curated exhibition, Unspooling: Artists & Cinema The selected artists explore these ideas in diverse ways to work with narrative through different media. The catalogue is published by Cornerhouse Publications and also feature essays by Dr. John Rimmer, Dr. Jaimie Baron, Dr. Maria Walsh and an interview between Dr. Sam George and Sir Christopher Frayling. The catalogue essays reflect the interdisciplinary nature of the exhibition's curatorial focus and feature contributions from visual arts, English literature and film studies backgrounds

The final two redshifts for radio sources from the equatorial BRL sample

Best, Rottgering and Lehnert (1999, 2000a) defined a new sample of powerful radio sources from the Molonglo Reference Catalogue, for which redshifts were compiled or measured for 177 of the 178 objects. For the final object, MRC1059-010 (3C249), the host galaxy is here identified using near-infrared imaging, and the redshift is determined from VLT spectroscopy. For one other object in the sample, MRC0320+053 (4C05.14), the literature redshift has been questioned: new spectroscopic observations of this object are presented, deriving a corrected redshift. With these two results, the spectroscopic completeness of this sample is now 100%. New redshifts are also presented for PKS0742+10 from the Wall & Peacock 2.7 GHz catalogue, and PKS1336+003 from the Parkes Selected Regions. PKS0742+10 shows a strong neutral hydrogen absorption feature in its Lyman-alpha emission profile.Comment: 4 pages. LaTeX. Accepted for publication in MNRA

The exhibition will be supplemented by a catalogue, new artwork commissions, a series of artist/curator talks, film screenings, workshops and a website. The idea of the exhibition is to make us look anew at the familiarity of artist's use of collage, moving image and the cinema space. The exhibition includes work by the curators, alongside five artists from the UK, Germany and USA- Elizabeth McAlpine, Dave Griffiths, Cathy Lomax, Rosa Barba and David Reed. The selected artists work across different mediums and have a sustained engagement with the subject of the exhibition. There will be three new commissions launching at touring venues from the selected artists. The exhibition tours from Royal Standard, Liverpool (16-31 March 2013) and tours to Standpoint Gallery, London (5 July- 17 August 2013), Greyfriars, Lincoln (4-26 October 2013) and Meter Room, Coventry (8 November - 1 December 2013). Spectroscopic detection of quasars in the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey

The 100,000 spectra from the 2 degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) in the 100k Public Data Release represent the largest single compilation of galaxy spectra available. By virtue of its sheer size and the properties of the photometric catalogue that defines the sample, the 2dFGRS is expected to contain a number of potentially interesting objects other than galaxies. A search of the spectra in the 100k Data Release results in a census of 55 candidate high-redshift (z > 0.3) quasars. One additional 2dFGRS spectrum of a low-redshift galaxy shows an apparent anomalous broad emission feature perhaps indicating the presence of a gravitationally lensed quasar. These objects have been identified primarily using two automated routines that we have developed specifically for this task, one of which uses a matched filter and the other a wavelet transform. A number of the quasar images possess complicated morphologies, suggesting the presence of either diffuse foreground objects along the line-of-sight or very nearby point sources. The quasar catalogue will form a target list for future absorption and lensing studies, as well as providing an assessment of the loss of quasars with non-stellar images from the companion 2dF QSO Redshift Survey.Comment: Latex 13 pages, 8 figures. The Mysterious bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud: What is it?

The bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is one of the prominent, but controversial feature regarding its location with respect to the disk of the LMC. In order to study the relative location of the bar with respect to the disk, we present the high resolution map of the structure across the LMC. We used the reddening corrected mean magnitudes ($I_0$) of red clump (RC) stars from the OGLE III catalogue to map the relative variation in distance (vertical structure) or variation in RC population across the LMC. The bar does not appear as an identifiable vertical feature in the map, as there is no difference in $I_0$ values between the bar and the disk regions. We conclude that the LMC bar is very much part of the disk, located in the plane of the disk (within 0.02 mag) and it is not a separate component. We identify warps or variation in RC population with increase in radial distance. %The structure map also suggests a %warp or a different RC population in the eastern part of the LMC disk.Comment: Astrophysical Journal Letters (in press

The RATAN-600 multi-frequency catalogue of blazars -- BLcat

In this paper we present the RATAN-600 multi-frequency catalogue of blazars, an updated version of the BLcat: the RATAN-600 multi-frequency catalogue of BL Lacertae objects. The main novelty in the catalogue is an extension of the sample with flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), thus currently it contains more than 1700 blazars of different types. The main feature of the BLcat is a compilation of radio continuum data for blazars based on the RATAN-600 quasi-simultaneous measurements at frequencies of 1.1, 2.3, 4.7, 7.7/8.2, 11.2, and 21.7/22.3 GHz. We additionally supplement the catalogue with the radio data from external sources to provide an opportunity to more complete study of radio spectra and radio light curves. For the convenience of users, we developed tools to calculate the spectral index, variability index, and radio luminosity. We briefly describe basic radio properties of blazar subsamples of the catalogue: spectral classification, spectral indices, flux density variability, and radio luminosity.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure
