    Modelling and analysis of FSO ground-to-train communications for straight and curved tracks

    In this work, a free space optical (FSO) link for the ground-to-train communications is proposed. Analytical analysis is carried out for the case of the straight as well as curved rail tracks. We show that the transmitter divergence angle, the transmit power and the size of the concentration lens needs to increase for the curved section of the rail track compared to the straight track. We derive the analytical expression (11) for the received power level based on the link geometry for the cases of straight and curved tracks. The received power variation is compared for two cases showing a similar dynamic range. In the worst case scenario when the radius of curvature is 120 m, the transmit power at the optical base station (OBS) needs to increase by over 2 dB when the concentration lens radius is increased by 5 times. Analyses also show that received power increases with the radius of curvature. Finally, results are compared with the existing straight track model

    High Speed Railway (HSR) provides its customers not only safety, security, comfort and on-time commuting, but also a fast transportation alternative to air travel or regular passenger rail services. Providing these benefits would not be possible without the tremendous growth and prevalence of wireless communication technologies. Due to advances in wireless communication systems, both trains and passengers are connected through high speed wireless networks to the Internet, data centers and railroad control centers. Railroad communities, academia, related industries and standards bodies, even the European Space Agency, are involved in advancing developments of HSR for highly connected train communication systems. The goal of these efforts is to provide the capabilities for uninterrupted high-speed fault-tolerant communication networks for all possible geographic, structural and weather conditions. This survey provides an overview of the current state-of-the-art and future trends for wireless technologies aiming to realize the concept of HSR communication services. Our goal is to highlight the challenges for these technologies, including GSM-R, Wi-Fi, WIMAX, LTE-R, RoF, LCX & Cognitive Radio, the offered solutions, their performance, and other related issues. Currently, providing HSR services is the goal of many countries across the globe. Europe, Japan & Taiwan, China, as well as North & South America have increased their efforts to advance HSR technologies to monitor and control not only the operations but also to deliver extensive broadband solutions to passengers. This survey determined a trend of the industry to transition control plane operations towards narrowband frequencies, i.e. LTE400/700, and to utilize concurrently other technologies for broadband access for passengers such that services of both user and train control systems are supported. With traditional technologies, a tradeoff was required and often favored train control services over passenger amenities. However, with the advances in communication systems, such as LTE-R and cognitive radios, it is becoming possible for system designers to offer rich services to passengers while also providing support for enhanced train control operations such as Positive Train Control

    Relayed FSO Links for Ground-to-Train Communications

    Sectorised base stations for FSO ground-to-train communications

    Evolution and accessibility of smart-phones have led to a huge demand in network bandwidth. The ubiquitous use of smart-phones in high-speed trains poses a unique challenge in delivering high-speed internet service on board. This challenge can be overcome by employing free-space optics, an alternative to radio-frequency technology. Previous coverage models for ground-train communications employed single laser systems with a larger divergence angle to cover a larger distance. Larger divergence angles lead to larger geometric losses, which may result in a non-reliable communication link. This study proposes a sectorised multi-beam coverage model with a smaller divergence angle to reduce the impact of geometric losses in the system. This study also proposes two receiver (Rx) architectures for Rxs deployed on the train. Along with geometric losses, the atmospheric attenuation is taken into consideration for the FSO link. The performance of the ground-train communications system in terms of bit-error-rate is evaluated under weak turbulence conditions via numerical simulation

    A Comprehensive Survey on Moving Networks

    The unprecedented increase in the demand for mobile data, fuelled by new emerging applications such as HD video streaming and heightened online activities has caused massive strain on the existing cellular networks. As a solution, the 5G technology has been introduced to improve network performance through various innovative features such as mmWave spectrum and HetNets. In essence, HetNets include several small cells underlaid within macro-cell to serve densely populated regions. Recently, a mobile layer of HetNet has been under consideration by the researchers and is often referred to as moving networks. Moving networks comprise of mobile cells that are primarily introduced to improve QoS for commuting users inside public transport because the QoS is deteriorated due to vehicular penetration losses. Furthermore, the users inside fast moving public transport also exert excessive load on the core network due to large group handovers. To this end, mobile cells will play a crucial role in reducing overall handover count and will help in alleviating these problems by decoupling in-vehicle users from the core network. To date, remarkable research results have been achieved by the research community in addressing challenges linked to moving networks. However, to the best of our knowledge, a discussion on moving networks in a holistic way is missing in the current literature. To fill the gap, in this paper, we comprehensively survey moving networks. We cover the technological aspects and their applications in the futuristic applications. We also discuss the use-cases and value additions that moving networks may bring to future cellular architecture and identify the challenges associated with them.     Antenna Array Enabled Space/Air/Ground Communications and Networking for 6G

    Antenna arrays have a long history of more than 100 years and have evolved closely with the development of electronic and information technologies, playing an indispensable role in wireless communications and radar. With the rapid development of electronic and information technologies, the demand for all-time, all-domain, and full-space network services has exploded, and new communication requirements have been put forward on various space/air/ground platforms. To meet the ever increasing requirements of the future sixth generation (6G) wireless communications, such as high capacity, wide coverage, low latency, and strong robustness, it is promising to employ different types of antenna arrays with various beamforming technologies in space/air/ground communication networks, bringing in advantages such as considerable antenna gains, multiplexing gains, and diversity gains. However, enabling antenna array for space/air/ground communication networks poses specific, distinctive and tricky challenges, which has aroused extensive research attention. This paper aims to overview the field of antenna array enabled space/air/ground communications and networking. The technical potentials and challenges of antenna array enabled space/air/ground communications and networking are presented first. Subsequently, the antenna array structures and designs are discussed. We then discuss various emerging technologies facilitated by antenna arrays to meet the new communication requirements of space/air/ground communication systems. Enabled by these emerging technologies, the distinct characteristics, challenges, and solutions for space communications, airborne communications, and ground communications are reviewed. Finally, we present promising directions for future research in antenna array enabled space/air/ground communications and networking
