Implementation of a Parallel CRC Calculation
After having analyzed the principle of CRC calculation, this article introduces a fast parallel CRC calculation based on serial realization. This parallel calculation could easy deduce the logical relationship for 32 b parallel CRC.Comparing with Table Lookup Algorithm,it needn′t store the large remainder table, and decrease the delay. This parallel processing method is also fit for other bitwide CRC.Finally, using ISE platform and Verilog HDL,we have designed the 32 b CRC32 encoder based on this parallel calculation, its simulation and synthesis results are provided. The designed encode have been successfully used to the Ethernet system
Integrating methods for determining length-at-age to improve growth estimates for two large scombrids
Fish growth is commonly estimated from length-at-age data
obtained from otoliths. There are several techniques for estimating length-at-age from otoliths including 1) direct observed counts of annual increments; 2) age adjustment based on a categorization of otolith margins; 3) age adjustment based on known periods of spawning and annuli formation; 4) back-calculation to all annuli, and 5) back-calculation to the last annulus only. In this study we
compared growth estimates (von Bertalanffy growth functions) obtained from the above five methods for estimating length-at-age from otoliths for two large scombrids: narrow-barred Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus
commerson) and broad-barred king mackerel (Scomberomorus semifasciatus). Likelihood ratio tests revealed that the largest differences in growth occurred between the back-calculation methods and the observed and adjusted methods for both species of mackerel. The pattern, however, was
more pronounced for S. commerson than for S. semifasciatus, because of the pronounced effect of gear selectivity
demonstrated for S. commerson. We propose a method of substituting length-at-age data from observed or adjusted methods with back-calculated length-at-age data to provide
more appropriate estimates of population growth than those obtained with the individual methods alone, particularly when faster growing young fish are disproportionately
selected for. Substitution of observed or adjusted length-at-age data with back-calculated length-at-age data provided more realistic estimates of length for younger ages than observed or adjusted methods as well as more
realistic estimates of mean maximum length than those derived from backcalculation methods alone
A quick search method for audio signals based on a piecewise linear representation of feature trajectories
This paper presents a new method for a quick similarity-based search through
long unlabeled audio streams to detect and locate audio clips provided by
users. The method involves feature-dimension reduction based on a piecewise
linear representation of a sequential feature trajectory extracted from a long
audio stream. Two techniques enable us to obtain a piecewise linear
representation: the dynamic segmentation of feature trajectories and the
segment-based Karhunen-L\'{o}eve (KL) transform. The proposed search method
guarantees the same search results as the search method without the proposed
feature-dimension reduction method in principle. Experiment results indicate
significant improvements in search speed. For example the proposed method
reduced the total search time to approximately 1/12 that of previous methods
and detected queries in approximately 0.3 seconds from a 200-hour audio
database.Comment: 20 pages, to appear in IEEE Transactions on Audio, Speech and

Throughput-based Design for Polar Coded-Modulation
Typically, forward error correction (FEC) codes are designed based on the
minimization of the error rate for a given code rate. However, for applications
that incorporate hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) protocol and adaptive
modulation and coding, the throughput is a more important performance metric
than the error rate. Polar codes, a new class of FEC codes with simple rate
matching, can be optimized efficiently for maximization of the throughput. In
this paper, we aim to design HARQ schemes using multilevel polar
coded-modulation (MLPCM). Thus, we first develop a method to determine a
set-partitioning based bit-to-symbol mapping for high order QAM constellations.
We simplify the LLR estimation of set-partitioned QAM constellations for a
multistage decoder, and we introduce a set of algorithms to design
throughput-maximizing MLPCM for the successive cancellation decoding (SCD).
These codes are specifically useful for non-combining (NC) and Chase-combining
(CC) HARQ protocols. Furthermore, since optimized codes for SCD are not optimal
for SC list decoders (SCLD), we propose a rate matching algorithm to find the
best rate for SCLD while using the polar codes optimized for SCD. The resulting
codes provide throughput close to the capacity with low decoding complexity
when used with NC or CC HARQ
