    Affective automotive user interfaces

    Technological progress in the fields of ubiquitous sensing and machine learning has been fueling the development of user-aware human-computer interaction in recent years. Especially natural user interfaces, like digital voice assistants, can benefit from understanding their users in order to provide a more naturalistic experience. Such systems can, for example, detect the emotional state of users and accordingly act in an empathic way. One major research field working on this topic is Affective Computing, where psycho-physiological measures, speech input, and facial expressions are used to sense human emotions. Affective data allows natural user interfaces to respond to emotions, providing promising perspectives not only for user experience design but also for safety aspects. In automotive environments, informed estimations of the driver’s state can potentially avoid dangerous errors and evoking positive emotions can improve the experience of driving. This dissertation explores Affective Automotive User Interfaces using two basic interaction paradigms: firstly, emotion regulation systems react to the current emotional state of the user based on live sensing data, allowing for quick interventions. Secondly, emotional interaction synthesizes experiences which resonate with the user on an emotional level. The constituted goals of these two interaction approaches are the promotion of safe behavior and an improvement of user experience. Promoting safe behavior through emotion regulation: Systems which detect and react to the driver’s state are expected to have great potential for improving road safety. This work presents a model and methods needed to investigate such systems and an exploration of several approaches to keep the driver in a safe state. The presented methods include techniques to induce emotions and to sample the emotional state of drivers. Three driving simulator studies investigate the impacts of emotionaware interventions in the form of implicit cues, visual mirroring and empathic speech synthesis. We envision emotion-awareness as a safety feature which can detect if a driver is unfit or in need of support, based on the propagation of robust emotion detection technology. Improving user experience with emotional interaction: Emotional perception is an essential part of user experience. This thesis entails methods to build emotional experiences derived from a variety of lab and simulator studies, expert feedback, car-storming sessions and design thinking workshops. Systems capable of adapting to the user’s preferences and traits in order to create an emotionally satisfactory user experience do not require the input of emotion detection. They rather create value through general knowledge about the user by adapting the output they generate. During this research, cultural and generational influences became evident, which have to be considered when implementing affective automotive user interfaces in future cars. We argue that the future of user-aware interaction lies in adapting not only to the driver’s preferences and settings but also to their current state. This paves the way for the regulation of safe behavior, especially in safety-critical environments like cars, and an improvement of the driving experience.Aktuelle Fortschritte in den Bereichen des Machine Learning und Ubiquitous Computing ermöglichen es heute adaptive Mensch-Maschine-Schnittstellen zu realisieren. Die vorgestellten Methoden beinhalten AnsĂ€tze zur Emotionsinduktion und -erkennung, sowie drei Fahrsimulatorstudien zur Beeinflussung von Fahrern durch indirekte Reize, Spiegeln von Emotionen und empathischer Sprachinteraktion. Emotionsadaptive Sicherheitssysteme können in Zukunft beeintrĂ€chtigten Fahrern Unterstützung leisten und so den Verkehr sicherer machen, vorausgesetzt die technischen Grundlagen der Emotionserkennung gewinnen an Reife. Verbesserung des Nutzererlebnisses durch emotionale Interaktion: Emotionen tragen einen großen Teil zum Nutzerlebnis bei, darum ist es nur sinnvoll den zweiten Fokuspunkt dieser Arbeit auf systeminitiierte emotionale Interaktion zu legen.Wir stellen die Ergebnisse nutzerzentrierter Ideenfindung und mehrer Evaluationsstudien der resultierenden Systeme vor. Um sich den Vorlieben und Eigenschaften von Nutzern anzupassen wird nicht zwingend Emotionserkennung benötigt. Der Mehrwert solcher Systeme besteht vielmehr darin, auf Basis verfügbarer Verhaltensdaten ein emotional anspruchsvolles Erlebnis zu ermöglichen. In unserer Arbeit stoßen wir außerdem auf kulturelle und demografische Einflüsse, die es bei der Gestaltung von emotionsadaptiven Nutzerschnittstellen zu beachten gibt.     The development of a human-robot interface for industrial collaborative system

    Industrial robots have been identified as one of the most effective solutions for optimising output and quality within many industries. However, there are a number of manufacturing applications involving complex tasks and inconstant components which prohibit the use of fully automated solutions in the foreseeable future. A breakthrough in robotic technologies and changes in safety legislations have supported the creation of robots that coexist and assist humans in industrial applications. It has been broadly recognised that human-robot collaborative systems would be a realistic solution as an advanced production system with wide range of applications and high economic impact. This type of system can utilise the best of both worlds, where the robot can perform simple tasks that require high repeatability while the human performs tasks that require judgement and dexterity of the human hands. Robots in such system will operate as “intelligent assistants”. In a collaborative working environment, robot and human share the same working area, and interact with each other. This level of interface will require effective ways of communication and collaboration to avoid unwanted conflicts. This project aims to create a user interface for industrial collaborative robot system through integration of current robotic technologies. The robotic system is designed for seamless collaboration with a human in close proximity. The system is capable to communicate with the human via the exchange of gestures, as well as visual signal which operators can observe and comprehend at a glance. The main objective of this PhD is to develop a Human-Robot Interface (HRI) for communication with an industrial collaborative robot during collaboration in proximity. The system is developed in conjunction with a small scale collaborative robot system which has been integrated using off-the-shelf components. The system should be capable of receiving input from the human user via an intuitive method as well as indicating its status to the user ii effectively. The HRI will be developed using a combination of hardware integrations and software developments. The software and the control framework were developed in a way that is applicable to other industrial robots in the future. The developed gesture command system is demonstrated on a heavy duty industrial robot

    Formation control of autonomous vehicles with emotion assessment

    Autonomous driving is a major state-of-the-art step that has the potential to transform the mobility of individuals and goods fundamentally. Most developed autonomous ground vehicles (AGVs) aim to sense the surroundings and control the vehicle autonomously with limited or no driver intervention. However, humans are a vital part of such vehicle operations. Therefore, an approach to understanding human emotions and creating trust between humans and machines is necessary. This thesis proposes a novel approach for multiple AGVs, consisting of a formation controller and human emotion assessment for autonomous driving and collaboration. As the interaction between multiple AGVs is essential, the performance of two multi-robot control algorithms is analysed, and a platoon formation controller is proposed. On the other hand, as the interaction between AGVs and humans is equally essential to create trust between humans and AGVs, the human emotion assessment method is proposed and used as feedback to make autonomous decisions for AGVs. A novel simulation platform is developed for navigating multiple AGVs and testing controllers to realise this concept. Further to this simulation tool, a method is proposed to assess human emotion using the affective dimension model and physiological signals such as an electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmography (PPG). The experiments are carried out to verify that humans' felt arousal and valence levels could be measured and translated to different emotions for autonomous driving operations. A per-subject-based classification accuracy is statistically significant and validates the proposed emotion assessment method. Also, a simulation is conducted to verify AGVs' velocity control effect of different emotions on driving tasks

    Mitigating User Frustration through Adaptive Feedback based on Human-Automation Etiquette Strategies

    The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of feedback and user frustration in human-computer interaction (HCI) and examine how to mitigate user frustration through feedback based on human-automation etiquette strategies. User frustration in HCI indicates a negative feeling that occurs when efforts to achieve a goal are impeded. User frustration impacts not only the communication with the computer itself, but also productivity, learning, and cognitive workload. Affect-aware systems have been studied to recognize user emotions and respond in different ways. Affect-aware systems need to be adaptive systems that change their behavior depending on users’ emotions. Adaptive systems have four categories of adaptations. Previous research has focused on primarily function allocation and to a lesser extent information content and task scheduling. However, the fourth approach, changing the interaction styles is the least explored because of the interplay of human factors considerations. Three interlinked studies were conducted to investigate the consequences of user frustration and explore mitigation techniques. Study 1 showed that delayed feedback from the system led to higher user frustration, anger, cognitive workload, and physiological arousal. In addition, delayed feedback decreased task performance and system usability in a human-robot interaction (HRI) context. Study 2 evaluated a possible approach of mitigating user frustration by applying human-human etiquette strategies in a tutoring context. The results of Study 2 showed that changing etiquette strategies led to changes in performance, motivation, confidence, and satisfaction. The most effective etiquette strategies changed when users were frustrated. Based on these results, an adaptive tutoring system prototype was developed and evaluated in Study 3. By utilizing a rule set derived from Study 2, the tutor was able to use different automation etiquette strategies to target and improve motivation, confidence, satisfaction, and performance using different strategies, under different levels of user frustration. This work establishes that changing the interaction style alone of a computer tutor can affect a user’s motivation, confidence, satisfaction, and performance. Furthermore, the beneficial effect of changing etiquette strategies is greater when users are frustrated. This work provides a basis for future work to develop affect-aware adaptive systems to mitigate user frustration

    Towards disappearing user interfaces for ubiquitous computing: human enhancement from sixth sense to super senses

    The enhancement of human senses electronically is possible when pervasive computers interact unnoticeably with humans in Ubiquitous Computing. The design of computer user interfaces towards “disappearing” forces the interaction with humans using a content rather than a menu driven approach, thus the emerging requirement for huge number of non-technical users interfacing intuitively with billions of computers in the Internet of Things is met. Learning to use particular applications in Ubiquitous Computing is either too slow or sometimes impossible so the design of user interfaces must be naturally enough to facilitate intuitive human behaviours. Although humans from different racial, cultural and ethnic backgrounds own the same physiological sensory system, the perception to the same stimuli outside the human bodies can be different. A novel taxonomy for Disappearing User Interfaces (DUIs) to stimulate human senses and to capture human responses is proposed. Furthermore, applications of DUIs are reviewed. DUIs with sensor and data fusion to simulate the Sixth Sense is explored. Enhancement of human senses through DUIs and Context Awareness is discussed as the groundwork enabling smarter wearable devices for interfacing with human emotional memories
