    Factors modifying the response of large animals to low-intensity radiation exposure

    In assessing the biological response to space radiation, two of the most important modifying factors are dose protraction and dose distribution to the body. Studies are reported in which sheep and swine were used to compare the hematology and lethality response resulting from radiation exposure encountered in a variety of forms, including acute (high dose-rate), chronic (low dose-rate), combinations of acute and chronic, and whether received as a continuous or as fractionated exposure. While sheep and swine are basically similar in response to acute radiation, their sensitivity to chronic irradiation is markedly different. Sheep remain relatively sensitive as the radiation exposure is protracted while swine are more resistant and capable of surviving extremely large doses of chronic irradiation. This response to chronic irradiation correlated well with changes in radiosensitivity and recovery following an acute, sublethal exposure

    Effects of Gamma Radiation on Salix nigra Marsh Cuttings

    Dormant cuttings of Salix nigra Marsh, were exposed to gamma radiation from a cobalt-60 source at a dose rate of 1110 roentgens (r) per minute. Exposure doses ranged from 50 r through 100 Kr with 100% mortality at 10 Kr. Low doses of ionizing radiation apparently stimulated growth, while higher doses progressively retarded growth. The growth of the staminate catkins was inversely proportional to total exposure dose (increased dose resulted in progressively decreased growth). Determination of growth rates at different intervals post-irradiation indicated recovery of the surviving fraction of the irradiated cuttings. At ninety days, the highest growth rate occurred at the highest surviving exposure dose. It was also noted that total RNA and protein concentrations were sensitive even to the lowest exposure doses. The effects of gamma radiation on development of viable pollen grains were scored on the basis of the aniline-blue (cotton blue) lactophenol test. Pollen grain viability was found to increase with increasing gamma radiation up to 100 r. Progressively lower pollen viability was recorded from 400 r up to 4 Kr

    One-step air bridge fabrication technique using 3D e-beam lithography

    A new technique is demonstrated for the realisation of air bridges using one lithographic step. Gray scale lithography is used for the formation of 3D profiles on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) where a variable dose exposure is applied to create a trapezoid profile for the air bridge. In previous 3D electron beam lithography (EBL) methods the span area was exposed to a low dose or a low acceleration voltage [1,2,3]. Thus, the required discontinuity with the surrounding area for the lift-off process was created. In this technique, no exposure of the span area is needed. Another exposure of a gradient dose is applied to the sides of the highest part of the air bridge. The created profile, after developing the resist, is depicted in Figure 1. The surfaces with red and blue colour represent the metal to form the air bridge and the metal to lift-off, respectively. Using this configuration, the deposited metal at the sides of the top part of the air bridge is connected to the surrounding metal to lift-off and disconnect from the air bridge. The electron dose used in this area has to be smaller than the minimum dose that penetrates the total resist layer, so that the deposited metal does not reach the substrate. This method takes maximum advantage of the resist thickness for the fabrication of high structures, as no part of the resist is sacrifice

    Toxicity of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) in the developing male Wistar(Han) rat II: chronic dosing causes developmental delay

    We have investigated whether fetal exposure to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) causes defects in the male reproductive system of the rat, using chronically exposed rats to ensure continuous exposure of the fetus. 5-6 week old rats were exposed to control diet, or diet containing TCDD, to attain an average dose of 2.4, 8 and 46 ng TCDD kg-1 day-1 for twelve weeks, whereupon the rats were mated, and allowed to litter; rats were switched to control diet after parturition. Male offspring were allowed to develop until kills on PND70 (25 per group), or PND120 (all remaining animals). Offspring from the high dose group showed an increase in total litter loss, and the number of animals alive on post-natal day (PND) 4 in the high dose group was ~26% less than control. The high and medium dose offspring showed decreased weights at various ages. Balano-preputial separation was significantly delayed in all three dose groups, compared to control. There were no significant effects of maternal treatment when the offspring were subjected to a functional observational battery, or learning tests, with the exception that the high dose group showed a deficit in motor activity. 20 rats per group were mated to females, and there were no significant effects of maternal treatment on the fertility of these rats, nor on the F1 or F2 sex ratio. Sperm parameters at PND70 and 120 showed no significant effect of maternal treatment, with the exception that there was an increase in the proportion of abnormal sperm in the high dose group at PND70; this is associated with the developmental delay in puberty in this dose group. There were no remarkable findings of maternal treatment on organ weights, with the exception that testis weights were reduced by ~10% at PND70 (but not PND120), and although the experiment was sufficiently powered to detect small changes, ventral prostate weight was not reduced. There were no significant effects of maternal treatment upon histopathological comparison of high dose and control group organs. These data confirm that developmental exposure to TCDD shows no potent effect on adult sperm parameters or accessory sexual organs, but show that delay in BPS occurs after exposure to low doses of TCDD, and this is dependent upon whether TCDD is administered acutely or chronically

    The validity and reliability of the exposure index as a metric for estimating the radiation dose to the patient

    Introduction With the introduction of digital radiography, the feedback between image quality and over-exposure has been partly lost which in some cases has led to a steady increase in dose. Over the years the introduction of exposure index (EI) has been used to resolve this phenomenon referred to as ‘dose creep’. Even though EI is often vendor specific it is always a related of the radiation exposure to the detector. Due to the nature of this relationship EI can also be used as a patient dose indicator, however this is not widely investigated in literature. Methods A total of 420 dose-area-product (DAP) and EI measurements were taken whilst varying kVp, mAs and body habitus on two different anthropomorphic phantoms (pelvis and chest). Using linear regression, the correlation between EI and DAP were examined. Additionally, two separate region of interest (ROI) placements/per phantom where examined in order to research any effect on EI. Results When dividing the data into subsets, a strong correlation between EI and DAP was shown with all R-squared values > 0.987. Comparison between the ROI placements showed a significant difference between EIs for both placements. Conclusion This research shows a clear relationship between EI and radiation dose which is dependent on a wide variety of factors such as ROI placement, body habitus. In addition, pathology and manufacturer specific EI’s are likely to be of influence as well. Implications for practice The combination of DAP and EI might be used as a patient dose indicator. However, the influencing factors as mentioned in the conclusion should be considered and examined before implementation

    The reverse protraction factor in the induction of bone sarcomas in radium-224 patients

    More than 50 bone sarcomas have occurred among a collective of about 800 patients who had been injected in Germany after World War II with large activities of radium-224 for the intended treatment of bone tuberculosis and ankylosing spondylitis.^In an earlier analysis it was concluded that, at equal mean absorbed doses in the skeleton, patients with longer exposure time had a higher incidence of bone sarcomas.^The previous analysis was based on approximations; in particular, it did not account for the varying times at risk of the individual patients.^In view of the implications of a reverse protraction factor for basic considerations in radiation protection, the need was therefore felt to reevaluate the data from the continued follow-up by more rigorous statistical methods.^A first step of the analysis demonstrates the existence of the reverse dose-rate effect in terms of a suitably constructed rank-order test.^In a second step of the analysis it is concluded that the data are consistent with a linear no-threshold dose dependence under the condition of constant exposure time, while there is a steeper than linear dependence on dose when the exposure times increase proportionally to dose.^A maximum likelihood fit of the data is then performed in terms of a proportional hazards model that includes the individual parameters, dose, treatment duration, and age at treatment.^The fit indicates proportionality of the tumor rates to mean skeletal dose with an added factor (1 + 0.18.tau), where tau is the treatment time in months.^This indicates that a protraction of the injections over 15 months instead of 5 months doubles the risk of bone sarcoma

    Liquid crystal anchoring transitions on aligning substrates processed by plasma beam

    We observe a sequence of the anchoring transitions in nematic liquid crystals (NLC) sandwiched between the hydrophobic polyimide substrates treated with the plasma beam. There is a pronounced continuous transition from homeotropic to low tilted (nearly planar) alignment with the easy axis parallel to the incidence plane of the plasma beam (the zenithal transition) that takes place as the exposure dose increases. In NLC with positive dielectric anisotropy, a further increase in the exposure dose results in in-plane reorientation of the easy axis by 90 degrees (the azimuthal transition). This transition occurs through the two-fold degenerated alignment characteristic for the second order anchoring transitions. In contrast to critical behavior of anchoring, the contact angle of NLC and water on the treated substrates monotonically declines with the exposure dose. It follows that the surface concentration of hydrophobic chains decreases continuously. The anchoring transitions under consideration are qualitatively interpreted by using a simple phenomenological model of competing easy axes which is studied by analyzing anchoring diagrams of the generalized polar and non-polar anchoring models.Comment: revtex4, 18 pages, 10 figure

    Effects of simulated space radiation on selected optical materials

    The effect of simulated Nimbus spacecraft orbital (1100 km, circular, and polar) radiation on wide bandpass glass filters, narrow bandpass thin film interference filters, and several fused silicas was determined by transmittance measurements over the 200 to 3400 nanom wavelength region. No changes were observed in the filters, which were shielded with fused silica during irradiation, after exposure to a 1-year equivalent orbital dose of electrons, nor in the fused silicas after the same electron exposure plus a 1-year equivalent dose of protons. Exposure to a 1/2-year equivalent dose of solar ultraviolet radiation caused a significant degradation in the transmittance of two ultraviolet-transmitting interference filters but had no effect on two colored glass filters that transmitted in the visible and near infrared regions. As a result of the ultraviolet exposure the fused silicas exhibited losses of several percent over the 200- to 300 nanom wavelength region

    Association between Outdoor Air Pollution and Childhood Leukemia: A Systematic Review and Dose-Response Meta-Analysis.

    BackgroundA causal link between outdoor air pollution and childhood leukemia has been proposed, but some older studies suffer from methodological drawbacks. To the best of our knowledge, no systematic reviews have summarized the most recently published evidence and no analyses have examined the dose-response relation.ObjectiveWe investigated the extent to which outdoor air pollution, especially as resulting from traffic-related contaminants, affects the risk of childhood leukemia.MethodsWe searched all case-control and cohort studies that have investigated the risk of childhood leukemia in relation to exposure either to motorized traffic and related contaminants, based on various traffic-related metrics (number of vehicles in the closest roads, road density, and distance from major roads), or to measured or modeled levels of air contaminants such as benzene, nitrogen dioxide, 1,3-butadiene, and particulate matter. We carried out a meta-analysis of all eligible studies, including nine studies published since the last systematic review and, when possible, we fit a dose-response curve using a restricted cubic spline regression model.ResultsWe found 29 studies eligible to be included in our review. In the dose-response analysis, we found little association between disease risk and traffic indicators near the child's residence for most of the exposure range, with an indication of a possible excess risk only at the highest levels. In contrast, benzene exposure was positively and approximately linearly associated with risk of childhood leukemia, particularly for acute myeloid leukemia, among children under 6 y of age, and when exposure assessment at the time of diagnosis was used. Exposure to nitrogen dioxide showed little association with leukemia risk except at the highest levels.DiscussionOverall, the epidemiologic literature appears to support an association between benzene and childhood leukemia risk, with no indication of any threshold effect. A role for other measured and unmeasured pollutants from motorized traffic is also possible. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP4381
