Maximum Entropy/Optimal Projection (MEOP) control design synthesis: Optimal quantification of the major design tradeoffs
The underlying philosophy and motivation of the optimal projection/maximum entropy (OP/ME) stochastic modeling and reduced control design methodology for high order systems with parameter uncertainties are discussed. The OP/ME design equations for reduced-order dynamic compensation including the effect of parameter uncertainties are reviewed. The application of the methodology to several Large Space Structures (LSS) problems of representative complexity is illustrated
Exploring the landscapes of "computing": digital, neuromorphic, unconventional -- and beyond
The acceleration race of digital computing technologies seems to be steering
toward impasses -- technological, economical and environmental -- a condition
that has spurred research efforts in alternative, "neuromorphic" (brain-like)
computing technologies. Furthermore, since decades the idea of exploiting
nonlinear physical phenomena "directly" for non-digital computing has been
explored under names like "unconventional computing", "natural computing",
"physical computing", or "in-materio computing". This has been taking place in
niches which are small compared to other sectors of computer science. In this
paper I stake out the grounds of how a general concept of "computing" can be
developed which comprises digital, neuromorphic, unconventional and possible
future "computing" paradigms. The main contribution of this paper is a
wide-scope survey of existing formal conceptualizations of "computing". The
survey inspects approaches rooted in three different kinds of background
mathematics: discrete-symbolic formalisms, probabilistic modeling, and
dynamical-systems oriented views. It turns out that different choices of
background mathematics lead to decisively different understandings of what
"computing" is. Across all of this diversity, a unifying coordinate system for
theorizing about "computing" can be distilled. Within these coordinates I
locate anchor points for a foundational formal theory of a future
computing-engineering discipline that includes, but will reach beyond, digital

Software engineering for 'quantum advantage'
Software is a critical factor in the reliability of computer systems. While the development of hardware is assisted by mature science and engineering disciplines, software science is still in its infancy. This situation is likely to worsen in the future with quantum computer systems. Actually, if quantum computing is quickly coming of age, with potential groundbreaking impacts on many different fields, such benefits come at a price: quantum programming is hard and finding new quantum algorithms is far from straightforward. Thus, the need for suitable formal techniques in quantum software development is even bigger than in classical computation. A lack of reliable approaches to quantum computer programming will put at risk the expected quantum advantage of the new hardware. Embracing complexity in design is one of the critical issues and challenges of the 21st century. As the realization grows that design activities and artefacts display properties associated with complex adaptive systems, so grows the need to use complexity concepts and methods to understand these properties and inform the design of better artifacts. It is a great challenge because complexity science represents an epistemological and methodological swift that promises a holistic approach in the understanding and operational support of design. But design is also a major contributor in complexity research. Design science is concerned with problems that are fundamental in the sciences in general and complexity sciences in particular. For instance, design has been perceived and studied as a ubiquitous activity inherent in every human activity, as the art of generating hypotheses, as a type of experiment, or as a creative co-evolutionary process. Design science and its established approaches and practices can be a great source for advancement and innovation in complexity science. These proceedings are the result of a workshop organized as part of the activities of a UK government AHRB/EPSRC funded research cluster called Embracing Complexity in Design (www.complexityanddesign.net) and the European Conference in Complex Systems (complexsystems.lri.fr).
