GEO INFORMATION EXTRACTION AND PROCESSING FROM TRAVEL NARRATIVES

Travel narratives published in electronic formats can be very important especially to the tourism community because of the great amount of knowledge that can be extracted. However, the low exploitation of these documents opens a new area of opportunity to the computing community. In this way, this article explores new ways to visualize travel narratives in a map in order to take advantage of experiences of individuals to recommend and describe travel places. Our approach is based on the use of a Geoparsing Web Service to extract geographic coordinates from travel narratives. Once geographic coordinates are extracted by using eXtensible Markup Language (XML) we draw the geo-positions and link the documents into a map image in order to visualize textual information

SISTEMA DE RECUPERAÇÃO DA INFORMAÇÃO: uma abordagem baseada em ontologias

Com a expansão da grande rede mundial de computadores e o crescimento da popularidade da web, um amplo volume de dados é gerado e publicado em inúmeras páginas da internet nas quais se encontram dados das mais diversas áreas do conhecimento. Em consequência disso, surgiu uma grande demanda pela busca de informações relevantes neste emaranhado de dados, fazendo aflorar importantes estudos relacionados à Recuperação da Informação. Nesse cenário, a presente pesquisa evidencia-se como uma análise descritiva, baseada em revisão de literatura, sobre os Sistemas de Recuperação da Informação que utilizam as ontologias para melhorar os resultados da pesquisa informacional. E tem como objetivo descrever as características básicas dos Sistemas de Recuperação da Informação, apresentar considerações sobre ontologias e destacar como esses conceitos podem ser utilizados para melhorar a relevância das consultas solicitadas pelos usuários. Com base nos trabalhos estudados, verificou-se que os Sistemas de Recuperação de Informação que fazem uso de ontologias apresentam melhor precisão nos resultados das consultas se comparados com os sistemas cujos modelos são baseados em palavras-chave e que não utilizam recursos capazes de capturar as conceptualizações associadas às necessidades de conteúdo dos usuários

Exploiting Geographic References of Documents in a Geographical Information Retrieval System Using an Ontology-based Index

... very active research fields in the last decades. Lately, a new research field called Geographic Information Retrieval has appeared from the intersection of these two fields. The main goal of this field is to define index structures and techniques to efficiently store and retrieve documents using both the text and the geographic references contained within the text. We present in this paper two contributions to this research field. First, we propose a new index structure that combines an inverted index and a spatial index based on an ontology of geographic space. This structure improves the query capabilities of other proposals. Then, we describe the architecture of a system for geographic information retrieval that defines a workflow for the extraction of the geographic references in documents. The architecture also uses the index structure that we propose to solve pure spatial and textual queries as well as hybrid queries that combine both a textual and a spatial component.
