This book is useful for physicians taking care of patients with cardiac arrhythmias and includes six chapters written by experts in their field. Chapter 1 discusses basic mechanisms of cardiac arrhythmias. Chapter 2 discusses the chronobiological aspects of the impact of apnoic episodes on ventricular arrhythmias. Chapter 3 discusses navigation, detection, and tracking during cardiac ablation interventions. Chapter 4 discusses epidemiology and pathophysiology of ventricular arrhythmias in several noncardiac diseases, methods used to assess arrhythmia risk, and their association with long-term outcomes. Chapter 5 discusses the treatment of ventricular arrhythmias including indications for implantation of an AICD for primary and for secondary prevention in patients with and without congestive heart failure. Chapter 6 discusses surgical management of atrial fibrillation

    Front Lines of Thoracic Surgery

Front Lines of Thoracic Surgery collects up-to-date contributions on some of the most debated topics in today's clinical practice of cardiac, aortic, and general thoracic surgery, and anesthesia as viewed by authors personally involved in their evolution. The strong and genuine enthusiasm of the authors was clearly perceptible in all their contributions and I'm sure that will further stimulate the reader to understand their messages. Moreover, the strict adhesion of the authors' original observations and findings to the evidence base proves that facts are the best guarantee of scientific value. This is not a standard textbook where the whole discipline is organically presented, but authors' contributions are simply listed in their pertaining subclasses of Thoracic Surgery. I'm sure that this original and very promising editorial format which has and free availability at its core further increases this book's value and it will be of interest to healthcare professionals and scientists dedicated to this field

Hypoxia, Hyperbaric Oxygen and Hypothermia: Some Experimental and Clinical Studies

This thesis contains details of a series of studies in which the interrelationship of hyperbaric oxygen, hypothermia and tissue hypoxia has been examined. The data derive from both experimental and clinical observations. The early experimental studies were designed to examine the pathophysiological changes occurring in animals subjected to various generalised hypoxic insults with a view to subsequent investigation of the effects of hyperbaric oxygen and hypothermia. The limitations of both techniques were revealed in later experimental and clinical studies. These investigations, however, were by no means entirely negative and yielded much information which proved to be of value in the management of a number of clinical conditions with an hypoxic basis, e.g., cardiac arrest, shock, severe anaemia, fat embolism and accidental hypothermia. The introductory chapter includes a summary of the mechanisms of oxygen transport from the lungs to the tissues followed by a brief description of the principal physiological and biochemical disturbances associated with hypoxia. A review of the subjects of hyperbaric oxygen and hypothermia serves as an introduction to more detailed discussion in later chapters. The ability of hyperbaric oxygen to increase oxygen storage capacity in the body was demonstrated by means of respiratory arrest in the anaesthetised dog. In the presence of a normally functioning circulation asphyxia was tolerated for periods of over 20 minutes after breathing oxygen at two atmospheres absolute (2 ATA). In the presence of an arrested circulation the equivalent period was eight minutes - representing only a modest increase on the duration of safe circulatory arrest attainable at normal atmospheric pressure. The combination of hyperbaric oxygen (2 ATA) and moderate hypothermia (2

This book considers mainly the current perioperative care, as well as progresses in new cardiac surgery technologies. Perioperative strategies and new technologies in the field of cardiac surgery will continue to contribute to improvements in postoperative outcomes and enable the cardiac surgical society to optimize surgical procedures. This book should prove to be a useful reference for trainees, senior surgeons and nurses in cardiac surgery, as well as anesthesiologists, perfusionists, and all the related health care workers who are involved in taking care of patients with heart disease which require surgical therapy. I hope these internationally cumulative and diligent efforts will provide patients undergoing cardiac surgery with meticulous perioperative care methods
