    The Semantic Web offers a generic infrastructure for interchange, integration and creative reuse of structured data, which can help to cross some of the boundaries that Web 2.0 is facing. Currently, Web 2.0 offers poor query possibilities apart from searching by keywords or tags. There has been a great deal of interest in the development of semantic-based systems to facilitate knowledge representation and extraction and content integration [1], [2]. Semantic-based approach to retrieving relevant material can be useful to address issues like trying to determine the type or the quality of the information suggested from a personalized environment. In this context, standard keyword search has a very limited effectiveness. For example, it cannot filter for the type of information, the level of information or the quality of information. Potentially, one of the biggest application areas of content-based exploration might be personalized searching framework (e.g., [3],[4]). Whereas search engines provide nowadays largely anonymous information, new framework might highlight or recommend web pages related to key concepts. We can consider semantic information representation as an important step towards a wide efficient manipulation and retrieval of information [5], [6], [7]. In the digital library community a flat list of attribute/value pairs is often assumed to be available. In the Semantic Web community, annotations are often assumed to be an instance of an ontology. Through the ontologies the system will express key entities and relationships describing resources in a formal machine-processable representation. An ontology-based knowledge representation could be used for content analysis and object recognition, for reasoning processes and for enabling user-friendly and intelligent multimedia content search and retrieval. Text summarization has been an interesting and active research area since the 60’s. The definition and assumption are that a small portion or several keywords of the original long document can represent the whole informatively and/or indicatively. Reading or processing this shorter version of the document would save time and other resources [8]. This property is especially true and urgently needed at present due to the vast availability of information. Concept-based approach to represent dynamic and unstructured information can be useful to address issues like trying to determine the key concepts and to summarize the information exchanged within a personalized environment. In this context, a concept is represented with a Wikipedia article. With millions of articles and thousands of contributors, this online repository of knowledge is the largest and fastest growing encyclopedia in existence. The problem described above can then be divided into three steps: • Mapping of a series of terms with the most appropriate Wikipedia article (disambiguation). • Assigning a score for each item identified on the basis of its importance in the given context. • Extraction of n items with the highest score. Text summarization can be applied to many fields: from information retrieval to text mining processes and text display. Also in personalized searching framework text summarization could be very useful. The chapter is organized as follows: the next Section introduces personalized searching framework as one of the possible application areas of automatic concept extraction systems. Section three describes the summarization process, providing details on system architecture, used methodology and tools. Section four provides an overview about document summarization approaches that have been recently developed. Section five summarizes a number of real-world applications which might benefit from WSD. Section six introduces Wikipedia and WordNet as used in our project. Section seven describes the logical structure of the project, describing software components and databases.     A Quadruple-Based Text Analysis System for History and Philosophy of Science

    abstract: Computational tools in the digital humanities often either work on the macro-scale, enabling researchers to analyze huge amounts of data, or on the micro-scale, supporting scholars in the interpretation and analysis of individual documents. The proposed research system that was developed in the context of this dissertation ("Quadriga System") works to bridge these two extremes by offering tools to support close reading and interpretation of texts, while at the same time providing a means for collaboration and data collection that could lead to analyses based on big datasets. In the field of history of science, researchers usually use unstructured data such as texts or images. To computationally analyze such data, it first has to be transformed into a machine-understandable format. The Quadriga System is based on the idea to represent texts as graphs of contextualized triples (or quadruples). Those graphs (or networks) can then be mathematically analyzed and visualized. This dissertation describes two projects that use the Quadriga System for the analysis and exploration of texts and the creation of social networks.     Feature Expansion for Social Media User Characterization

    Personality plays an impactful role in our lives and psychologists believe that an individual’s behavior can be inferred through its personality. Recently, there have been cases of influential people in social media spreading misinformation, which is a potentially dangerous action. To prevent it, we need to identify which users will negatively impact the community, and we might be able to predict such behavior through personality recognition from their social media posts. This dissertation presents an approach to personality recognition from text. During the bibliographic revision, we learned that a text analysis tool called LIWC is repeatedly used with success for tasks of this type, thus we chose the LIWC dictionary to be the base feature set to consider. Also, we have found that Support-Vector Machine classifiers exhibit the best results. From these two findings, we outlined the following objectives: (i) exploit machine learning algorithms different from the ones used in related works to find one that produces better results; (ii) analyze whether extending LIWC’s vocabulary without supervision improves the classification results. For training and testing, we used a data set of stream-of-consciousness essays comprised of 2468 samples annotated with the Big Five personality traits of the writer: openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. We used four machine learning algorithms for classification: Support-Vector Machine, Naive Bayes, Decision Tree, and Random Forest. Also, we selected two methods for vocabulary expansion: WordNet’s synsets, and Word Embeddings. The results obtained show that the Random Forest classifier performs similarly to the algorithms used in related works, with an average accuracy of approximately 56.5%, which are promising ratings. The vocabulary expansions we have performed allowed the algorithm to match 0.6% more words from the essay data set. However, the changes to the classification results were not significant, therefore the vocabulary expansion was not beneficial.A personalidade é um fator fundamental nas nossas vidas e os psicólogos acreditam que o comportamento de um indivíduo pode ser inferido com base na sua personalidade. Recentemente, ocorreram casos de disseminação de informação falsa em redes sociais por parte de pessoas influentes, executando assim ações potencialmente perigosas. Para prevenir estes acontecimentos, é necessário identificar quais os utilizadores que afetarão negativamente a comunidade, e poderemos fazê-lo com o reconhecimento de personalidade através das suas publicações em redes sociais. Esta dissertação apresenta uma abordagem à tarefa de reconhecimento de personalidade através de texto. Durante a revisão bibliográfica, identificámos uma ferramenta de análise de texto chamada Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) que é usada repetidamente e com sucesso em trabalhos relacionados e, portanto, decidimos que será a base de dados a utilizar para extração de características. Verificou-se também que classificadores Support-Vector Machine produzem os melhores resultados. Perante estes factos, delineámos os seguintes objetivos: (i) explorar algoritmos de aprendizagem automática diferentes dos usados em trabalhos relacionados para encontrar um que produza melhores resultados; (ii) analisar se uma extensão não supervisionada do vocabulário do LIWC melhora os resultados da classificação. Para treinar e testar os modelos, usámos um conjunto de 2468 ensaios de fluxo de consciência anotados com os traços de personalidade Big Five do escritor: abertura para a experiência, conscienciosidade, extroversão, amabilidade, e neuroticismo. Implementámos quatro algoritmos de aprendizagem automática para classificar os textos: Support-Vector Machine, Naive Bayes, Decision Tree, e Random Forest. Para além disso, selecionámos dois métodos para a expansão de vocabulário: sinónimos cognitivos do WordNet, e Word Embeddings. Os resultados obtidos demonstram que o classificador Random Forest tem uma performance promissora, semelhante à dos algoritmos utilizados pelos artigos relacionados, com uma exatidão média de aproximadamente 56.5%. As expansões de vocabulário realizadas traduziram-se num aumento de 0.6% de palavras dos ensaios atribuídas a categorias do LIWC. No entanto, a diferença introduzida nos resultados não é significativa, portanto a expansão de vocabulário não mostrou benefícios

    Text–to–Video: Image Semantics and NLP

    When aiming at automatically translating an arbitrary text into a visual story, the main challenge consists in finding a semantically close visual representation whereby the displayed meaning should remain the same as in the given text. Besides, the appearance of an image itself largely influences how its meaningful information is transported towards an observer. This thesis now demonstrates that investigating in both, image semantics as well as the semantic relatedness between visual and textual sources enables us to tackle the challenging semantic gap and to find a semantically close translation from natural language to a corresponding visual representation. Within the last years, social networking became of high interest leading to an enormous and still increasing amount of online available data. Photo sharing sites like Flickr allow users to associate textual information with their uploaded imagery. Thus, this thesis exploits this huge knowledge source of user generated data providing initial links between images and words, and other meaningful data. In order to approach visual semantics, this work presents various methods to analyze the visual structure as well as the appearance of images in terms of meaningful similarities, aesthetic appeal, and emotional effect towards an observer. In detail, our GPU-based approach efficiently finds visual similarities between images in large datasets across visual domains and identifies various meanings for ambiguous words exploring similarity in online search results. Further, we investigate in the highly subjective aesthetic appeal of images and make use of deep learning to directly learn aesthetic rankings from a broad diversity of user reactions in social online behavior. To gain even deeper insights into the influence of visual appearance towards an observer, we explore how simple image processing is capable of actually changing the emotional perception and derive a simple but effective image filter. To identify meaningful connections between written text and visual representations, we employ methods from Natural Language Processing (NLP). Extensive textual processing allows us to create semantically relevant illustrations for simple text elements as well as complete storylines. More precisely, we present an approach that resolves dependencies in textual descriptions to arrange 3D models correctly. Further, we develop a method that finds semantically relevant illustrations to texts of different types based on a novel hierarchical querying algorithm. Finally, we present an optimization based framework that is capable of not only generating semantically relevant but also visually coherent picture stories in different styles.Bei der automatischen Umwandlung eines beliebigen Textes in eine visuelle Geschichte, besteht die größte Herausforderung darin eine semantisch passende visuelle Darstellung zu finden. Dabei sollte die Bedeutung der Darstellung dem vorgegebenen Text entsprechen. Darüber hinaus hat die Erscheinung eines Bildes einen großen Einfluß darauf, wie seine bedeutungsvollen Inhalte auf einen Betrachter übertragen werden. Diese Dissertation zeigt, dass die Erforschung sowohl der Bildsemantik als auch der semantischen Verbindung zwischen visuellen und textuellen Quellen es ermöglicht, die anspruchsvolle semantische Lücke zu schließen und eine semantisch nahe Übersetzung von natürlicher Sprache in eine entsprechend sinngemäße visuelle Darstellung zu finden. Des Weiteren gewann die soziale Vernetzung in den letzten Jahren zunehmend an Bedeutung, was zu einer enormen und immer noch wachsenden Menge an online verfügbaren Daten geführt hat. Foto-Sharing-Websites wie Flickr ermöglichen es Benutzern, Textinformationen mit ihren hochgeladenen Bildern zu verknüpfen. Die vorliegende Arbeit nutzt die enorme Wissensquelle von benutzergenerierten Daten welche erste Verbindungen zwischen Bildern und Wörtern sowie anderen aussagekräftigen Daten zur Verfügung stellt. Zur Erforschung der visuellen Semantik stellt diese Arbeit unterschiedliche Methoden vor, um die visuelle Struktur sowie die Wirkung von Bildern in Bezug auf bedeutungsvolle Ähnlichkeiten, ästhetische Erscheinung und emotionalem Einfluss auf einen Beobachter zu analysieren. Genauer gesagt, findet unser GPU-basierter Ansatz effizient visuelle Ähnlichkeiten zwischen Bildern in großen Datenmengen quer über visuelle Domänen hinweg und identifiziert verschiedene Bedeutungen für mehrdeutige Wörter durch die Erforschung von Ähnlichkeiten in Online-Suchergebnissen. Des Weiteren wird die höchst subjektive ästhetische Anziehungskraft von Bildern untersucht und "deep learning" genutzt, um direkt ästhetische Einordnungen aus einer breiten Vielfalt von Benutzerreaktionen im sozialen Online-Verhalten zu lernen. Um noch tiefere Erkenntnisse über den Einfluss des visuellen Erscheinungsbildes auf einen Betrachter zu gewinnen, wird erforscht, wie alleinig einfache Bildverarbeitung in der Lage ist, tatsächlich die emotionale Wahrnehmung zu verändern und ein einfacher aber wirkungsvoller Bildfilter davon abgeleitet werden kann. Um bedeutungserhaltende Verbindungen zwischen geschriebenem Text und visueller Darstellung zu ermitteln, werden Methoden des "Natural Language Processing (NLP)" verwendet, die der Verarbeitung natürlicher Sprache dienen. Der Einsatz umfangreicher Textverarbeitung ermöglicht es, semantisch relevante Illustrationen für einfache Textteile sowie für komplette Handlungsstränge zu erzeugen. Im Detail wird ein Ansatz vorgestellt, der Abhängigkeiten in Textbeschreibungen auflöst, um 3D-Modelle korrekt anzuordnen. Des Weiteren wird eine Methode entwickelt die, basierend auf einem neuen hierarchischen Such-Anfrage Algorithmus, semantisch relevante Illustrationen zu Texten verschiedener Art findet. Schließlich wird ein optimierungsbasiertes Framework vorgestellt, das nicht nur semantisch relevante, sondern auch visuell kohärente Bildgeschichten in verschiedenen Bildstilen erzeugen kann

    Semantic Similarity of Spatial Scenes

    The formalization of similarity in spatial information systems can unleash their functionality and contribute technology not only useful, but also desirable by broad groups of users. As a paradigm for information retrieval, similarity supersedes tedious querying techniques and unveils novel ways for user-system interaction by naturally supporting modalities such as speech and sketching. As a tool within the scope of a broader objective, it can facilitate such diverse tasks as data integration, landmark determination, and prediction making. This potential motivated the development of several similarity models within the geospatial and computer science communities. Despite the merit of these studies, their cognitive plausibility can be limited due to neglect of well-established psychological principles about properties and behaviors of similarity. Moreover, such approaches are typically guided by experience, intuition, and observation, thereby often relying on more narrow perspectives or restrictive assumptions that produce inflexible and incompatible measures. This thesis consolidates such fragmentary efforts and integrates them along with novel formalisms into a scalable, comprehensive, and cognitively-sensitive framework for similarity queries in spatial information systems. Three conceptually different similarity queries at the levels of attributes, objects, and scenes are distinguished. An analysis of the relationship between similarity and change provides a unifying basis for the approach and a theoretical foundation for measures satisfying important similarity properties such as asymmetry and context dependence. The classification of attributes into categories with common structural and cognitive characteristics drives the implementation of a small core of generic functions, able to perform any type of attribute value assessment. Appropriate techniques combine such atomic assessments to compute similarities at the object level and to handle more complex inquiries with multiple constraints. These techniques, along with a solid graph-theoretical methodology adapted to the particularities of the geospatial domain, provide the foundation for reasoning about scene similarity queries. Provisions are made so that all methods comply with major psychological findings about people’s perceptions of similarity. An experimental evaluation supplies the main result of this thesis, which separates psychological findings with a major impact on the results from those that can be safely incorporated into the framework through computationally simpler alternatives
