    Patient-specific anatomical illustration via model-guided texture synthesis

    Medical illustrations can make powerful use of textures to attractively, effectively, and efficiently visualize the appearance of the surface or cut surface of anatomic structures. It can do this by implying the anatomic structure's physical composition and clarifying its identity and 3-D shape. Current visualization methods are only capable of conveying detailed information about the orientation, internal structure, and other local properties of the anatomical objects for a typical individual, not for a particular patient. Although one can derive the shape of the individual patient's object from CT or MRI, it is important to apply these illustrative techniques to those particular shapes. In this research patient-specific anatomical illustrations are created by model-guided texture synthesis (MGTS). Given 2D exemplar textures and model-based guidance information as input, MGTS uses exemplar-based texture synthesis techniques to create patient-specific surface and solid textures. It consists of three main components. The first component includes a novel texture metamorphosis approach for creating interpolated exemplar textures given two exemplar textures. This component uses an energy optimization scheme derived from optimal control principles that utilizes intensity and structure information in obtaining the transformation. The second component consists of creating the model-based guidance information, such as directions and layers, for that specific model. This component uses coordinates implied by discrete medial 3D anatomical models (m-reps). The last component accomplishes exemplar-based texture synthesis by textures whose characteristics are spatially variant on and inside the 3D models. It considers the exemplar textures from the first component and guidance information from the second component in synthesizing high-quality, high-resolution solid and surface textures. Patient-specific illustrations with a variety of textures for different anatomical models, such as muscles and bones, are shown to be useful for our clinician to comprehend the shape of the models under radiation dose and to distinguish the models from one another

    Spatially Aware Dictionary Learning and Coding for Fossil Pollen Identification

    We propose a robust approach for performing automatic species-level recognition of fossil pollen grains in microscopy images that exploits both global shape and local texture characteristics in a patch-based matching methodology. We introduce a novel criteria for selecting meaningful and discriminative exemplar patches. We optimize this function during training using a greedy submodular function optimization framework that gives a near-optimal solution with bounded approximation error. We use these selected exemplars as a dictionary basis and propose a spatially-aware sparse coding method to match testing images for identification while maintaining global shape correspondence. To accelerate the coding process for fast matching, we introduce a relaxed form that uses spatially-aware soft-thresholding during coding. Finally, we carry out an experimental study that demonstrates the effectiveness and efficiency of our exemplar selection and classification mechanisms, achieving 86.13%86.13\% accuracy on a difficult fine-grained species classification task distinguishing three types of fossil spruce pollen.Comment: CVMI 201

    Mean value coordinates–based caricature and expression synthesis

    We present a novel method for caricature synthesis based on mean value coordinates (MVC). Our method can be applied to any single frontal face image to learn a specified caricature face pair for frontal and 3D caricature synthesis. This technique only requires one or a small number of exemplar pairs and a natural frontal face image training set, while the system can transfer the style of the exemplar pair across individuals. Further exaggeration can be fulfilled in a controllable way. Our method is further applied to facial expression transfer, interpolation, and exaggeration, which are applications of expression editing. Additionally, we have extended our approach to 3D caricature synthesis based on the 3D version of MVC. With experiments we demonstrate that the transferred expressions are credible and the resulting caricatures can be characterized and recognized

    A survey of exemplar-based texture synthesis

    Exemplar-based texture synthesis is the process of generating, from an input sample, new texture images of arbitrary size and which are perceptually equivalent to the sample. The two main approaches are statistics-based methods and patch re-arrangement methods. In the first class, a texture is characterized by a statistical signature; then, a random sampling conditioned to this signature produces genuinely different texture images. The second class boils down to a clever "copy-paste" procedure, which stitches together large regions of the sample. Hybrid methods try to combine ideas from both approaches to avoid their hurdles. The recent approaches using convolutional neural networks fit to this classification, some being statistical and others performing patch re-arrangement in the feature space. They produce impressive synthesis on various kinds of textures. Nevertheless, we found that most real textures are organized at multiple scales, with global structures revealed at coarse scales and highly varying details at finer ones. Thus, when confronted with large natural images of textures the results of state-of-the-art methods degrade rapidly, and the problem of modeling them remains wide open.Comment: v2: Added comments and typos fixes.     A texture based approach to reconstruction of archaeological finds

    Reconstruction of archaeological finds from fragments, is a tedious task requiring many hours of work from the archaeologists and restoration personnel. In this paper we present a framework for the full reconstruction of the original objects using texture and surface design information on the sherd. The texture of a band outside the border of pieces is predicted by inpainting and texture synthesis methods. The confidence of this process is also defined. Feature values are derived from these original and predicted images of pieces. A combination of the feature and confidence values is used to generate an affinity measure of corresponding pieces. The optimization of total affinity gives the best assembly of the piece. Experimental results are presented on real and artificial data

    A Self-Organizing Neural System for Learning to Recognize Textured Scenes

    A self-organizing ARTEX model is developed to categorize and classify textured image regions. ARTEX specializes the FACADE model of how the visual cortex sees, and the ART model of how temporal and prefrontal cortices interact with the hippocampal system to learn visual recognition categories and their names. FACADE processing generates a vector of boundary and surface properties, notably texture and brightness properties, by utilizing multi-scale filtering, competition, and diffusive filling-in. Its context-sensitive local measures of textured scenes can be used to recognize scenic properties that gradually change across space, as well a.s abrupt texture boundaries. ART incrementally learns recognition categories that classify FACADE output vectors, class names of these categories, and their probabilities. Top-down expectations within ART encode learned prototypes that pay attention to expected visual features. When novel visual information creates a poor match with the best existing category prototype, a memory search selects a new category with which classify the novel data. ARTEX is compared with psychophysical data, and is benchmarked on classification of natural textures and synthetic aperture radar images.     Optimization for automated assembly of puzzles

    The puzzle assembly problem has many application areas such as restoration and reconstruction of archeological findings, repairing of broken objects, solving jigsaw type puzzles, molecular docking problem, etc. The puzzle pieces usually include not only geometrical shape information but also visual information such as texture, color, and continuity of lines. This paper presents a new approach to the puzzle assembly problem that is based on using textural features and geometrical constraints. The texture of a band outside the border of pieces is predicted by inpainting and texture synthesis methods. Feature values are derived from these original and predicted images of pieces. An affinity measure of corresponding pieces is defined and alignment of the puzzle pieces is formulated as an optimization problem where the optimum assembly of the pieces is achieved by maximizing the total affinity measure. An fft based image registration technique is used to speed up the alignment of the pieces. Experimental results are presented on real and artificial data sets
