    Global solution of non-convex quadratically constrained quadratic programs

    International audienceThe class of mixed-integer quadratically constrained quadratic programs (QCQP) consists of minimizing a quadratic function under quadratic constraints where the variables could be integer or continuous. On a previous paper we introduced a method called MIQCR for solving QC-QPs with the following restriction : all quadratic sub-functions of purely continuous variables are already convex. In this paper, we propose an extension of MIQCR which applies to any QCQP. Let (P) be a QCQP. Our approach to solve (P) is first to build an equivalent mixed-integer quadratic problem (P *). This equivalent problem (P *) has a quadratic convex objective function, linear constraints, and additional variables y that are meant to satisfy the additional quadratic constraints y = xx T , where x are the initial variables of problem (P). We then propose to solve (P *) by a branch-and-bound algorithm based on the relaxation of the additional quadratic constraints and of the integrality constraints. This type of branching is known as spatial branch-and-bound. Computational experiences are carried out on a total of 325 instances. The results show that the solution time of most of the considered instances is improved by our method in comparison with the recent implementation of QuadProgBB, and with the solvers Cplex, Couenne, Scip, BARON and GloMIQO

    A Framework for Globally Optimizing Mixed-Integer Signomial Programs

    Mixed-integer signomial optimization problems have broad applicability in engineering. Extending the Global Mixed-Integer Quadratic Optimizer, GloMIQO (Misener, Floudas in J. Glob. Optim., 2012. doi:10.1007/s10898-012-9874-7), this manuscript documents a computational framework for deterministically addressing mixed-integer signomial optimization problems to ε-global optimality. This framework generalizes the GloMIQO strategies of (1) reformulating user input, (2) detecting special mathematical structure, and (3) globally optimizing the mixed-integer nonconvex program. Novel contributions of this paper include: flattening an expression tree towards term-based data structures; introducing additional nonconvex terms to interlink expressions; integrating a dynamic implementation of the reformulation-linearization technique into the branch-and-cut tree; designing term-based underestimators that specialize relaxation strategies according to variable bounds in the current tree node. Computational results are presented along with comparison of the computational framework to several state-of-the-art solvers. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York

    Nonlinear Integer Programming

    Research efforts of the past fifty years have led to a development of linear integer programming as a mature discipline of mathematical optimization. Such a level of maturity has not been reached when one considers nonlinear systems subject to integrality requirements for the variables. This chapter is dedicated to this topic. The primary goal is a study of a simple version of general nonlinear integer problems, where all constraints are still linear. Our focus is on the computational complexity of the problem, which varies significantly with the type of nonlinear objective function in combination with the underlying combinatorial structure. Numerous boundary cases of complexity emerge, which sometimes surprisingly lead even to polynomial time algorithms. We also cover recent successful approaches for more general classes of problems. Though no positive theoretical efficiency results are available, nor are they likely to ever be available, these seem to be the currently most successful and interesting approaches for solving practical problems. It is our belief that the study of algorithms motivated by theoretical considerations and those motivated by our desire to solve practical instances should and do inform one another.     Convexification of Queueing Formulas by Mixed-Integer Second-Order Cone Programming: An Application to a Discrete Location Problem with Congestion

    Mixed-Integer Second-Order Cone Programs (MISOCPs) form a nice class of mixed-inter convex programs, which can be solved very efficiently due to the recent advances in optimization solvers. Our paper bridges the gap between modeling a class of optimization problems and using MISOCP solvers. It is shown how various performance metrics of M/G/1 queues can be molded by different MISOCPs. To motivate our method practically, it is first applied to a challenging stochastic location problem with congestion, which is broadly used to design socially optimal service networks. Four different MISOCPs are developed and compared on sets of benchmark test problems. The new formulations efficiently solve large-size test problems, which cannot be solved by the best existing method. Then, the general applicability of our method is shown for similar optimization problems that use queue-theoretic performance measures to address customer satisfaction and service quality
