Unsupervised Feature Learning through Divergent Discriminative Feature Accumulation
Unlike unsupervised approaches such as autoencoders that learn to reconstruct
their inputs, this paper introduces an alternative approach to unsupervised
feature learning called divergent discriminative feature accumulation (DDFA)
that instead continually accumulates features that make novel discriminations
among the training set. Thus DDFA features are inherently discriminative from
the start even though they are trained without knowledge of the ultimate
classification problem. Interestingly, DDFA also continues to add new features
indefinitely (so it does not depend on a hidden layer size), is not based on
minimizing error, and is inherently divergent instead of convergent, thereby
providing a unique direction of research for unsupervised feature learning. In
this paper the quality of its learned features is demonstrated on the MNIST
dataset, where its performance confirms that indeed DDFA is a viable technique

Learning Tasks for Multitask Learning: Heterogenous Patient Populations in the ICU
Machine learning approaches have been effective in predicting adverse
outcomes in different clinical settings. These models are often developed and
evaluated on datasets with heterogeneous patient populations. However, good
predictive performance on the aggregate population does not imply good
performance for specific groups.
In this work, we present a two-step framework to 1) learn relevant patient
subgroups, and 2) predict an outcome for separate patient populations in a
multi-task framework, where each population is a separate task. We demonstrate
how to discover relevant groups in an unsupervised way with a
sequence-to-sequence autoencoder. We show that using these groups in a
multi-task framework leads to better predictive performance of in-hospital
mortality both across groups and overall. We also highlight the need for more
granular evaluation of performance when dealing with heterogeneous populations.Comment: KDD 201
Recent Advances in Transfer Learning for Cross-Dataset Visual Recognition: A Problem-Oriented Perspective
This paper takes a problem-oriented perspective and presents a comprehensive
review of transfer learning methods, both shallow and deep, for cross-dataset
visual recognition. Specifically, it categorises the cross-dataset recognition
into seventeen problems based on a set of carefully chosen data and label
attributes. Such a problem-oriented taxonomy has allowed us to examine how
different transfer learning approaches tackle each problem and how well each
problem has been researched to date. The comprehensive problem-oriented review
of the advances in transfer learning with respect to the problem has not only
revealed the challenges in transfer learning for visual recognition, but also
the problems (e.g. eight of the seventeen problems) that have been scarcely
studied. This survey not only presents an up-to-date technical review for
researchers, but also a systematic approach and a reference for a machine
learning practitioner to categorise a real problem and to look up for a
possible solution accordingly
Symbol Emergence in Robotics: A Survey
Humans can learn the use of language through physical interaction with their
environment and semiotic communication with other people. It is very important
to obtain a computational understanding of how humans can form a symbol system
and obtain semiotic skills through their autonomous mental development.
Recently, many studies have been conducted on the construction of robotic
systems and machine-learning methods that can learn the use of language through
embodied multimodal interaction with their environment and other systems.
Understanding human social interactions and developing a robot that can
smoothly communicate with human users in the long term, requires an
understanding of the dynamics of symbol systems and is crucially important. The
embodied cognition and social interaction of participants gradually change a
symbol system in a constructive manner. In this paper, we introduce a field of
research called symbol emergence in robotics (SER). SER is a constructive
approach towards an emergent symbol system. The emergent symbol system is
socially self-organized through both semiotic communications and physical
interactions with autonomous cognitive developmental agents, i.e., humans and
developmental robots. Specifically, we describe some state-of-art research
topics concerning SER, e.g., multimodal categorization, word discovery, and a
double articulation analysis, that enable a robot to obtain words and their
embodied meanings from raw sensory--motor information, including visual
information, haptic information, auditory information, and acoustic speech
signals, in a totally unsupervised manner. Finally, we suggest future
