    Multi-agent evolutionary systems for the generation of complex virtual worlds

    Modern films, games and virtual reality applications are dependent on convincing computer graphics. Highly complex models are a requirement for the successful delivery of many scenes and environments. While workflows such as rendering, compositing and animation have been streamlined to accommodate increasing demands, modelling complex models is still a laborious task. This paper introduces the computational benefits of an Interactive Genetic Algorithm (IGA) to computer graphics modelling while compensating the effects of user fatigue, a common issue with Interactive Evolutionary Computation. An intelligent agent is used in conjunction with an IGA that offers the potential to reduce the effects of user fatigue by learning from the choices made by the human designer and directing the search accordingly. This workflow accelerates the layout and distribution of basic elements to form complex models. It captures the designer's intent through interaction, and encourages playful discovery

    A memetic algorithm with adaptive hill climbing strategy for dynamic optimization problems

    Copyright @ Springer-Verlag 2008Dynamic optimization problems challenge traditional evolutionary algorithms seriously since they, once converged, cannot adapt quickly to environmental changes. This paper investigates the application of memetic algorithms, a class of hybrid evolutionary algorithms, for dynamic optimization problems. An adaptive hill climbing method is proposed as the local search technique in the framework of memetic algorithms, which combines the features of greedy crossover-based hill climbing and steepest mutation-based hill climbing. In order to address the convergence problem, two diversity maintaining methods, called adaptive dual mapping and triggered random immigrants, respectively, are also introduced into the proposed memetic algorithm for dynamic optimization problems. Based on a series of dynamic problems generated from several stationary benchmark problems, experiments are carried out to investigate the performance of the proposed memetic algorithm in comparison with some peer evolutionary algorithms.     A particle swarm optimization based memetic algorithm for dynamic optimization problems

    Copyright @ Springer Science + Business Media B.V. 2010.Recently, there has been an increasing concern from the evolutionary computation community on dynamic optimization problems since many real-world optimization problems are dynamic. This paper investigates a particle swarm optimization (PSO) based memetic algorithm that hybridizes PSO with a local search technique for dynamic optimization problems. Within the framework of the proposed algorithm, a local version of PSO with a ring-shape topology structure is used as the global search operator and a fuzzy cognition local search method is proposed as the local search technique. In addition, a self-organized random immigrants scheme is extended into our proposed algorithm in order to further enhance its exploration capacity for new peaks in the search space.     PasMoQAP: A Parallel Asynchronous Memetic Algorithm for solving the Multi-Objective Quadratic Assignment Problem

    Multi-Objective Optimization Problems (MOPs) have attracted growing attention during the last decades. Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEAs) have been extensively used to address MOPs because are able to approximate a set of non-dominated high-quality solutions. The Multi-Objective Quadratic Assignment Problem (mQAP) is a MOP. The mQAP is a generalization of the classical QAP which has been extensively studied, and used in several real-life applications. The mQAP is defined as having as input several flows between the facilities which generate multiple cost functions that must be optimized simultaneously. In this study, we propose PasMoQAP, a parallel asynchronous memetic algorithm to solve the Multi-Objective Quadratic Assignment Problem. PasMoQAP is based on an island model that structures the population by creating sub-populations. The memetic algorithm on each island individually evolve a reduced population of solutions, and they asynchronously cooperate by sending selected solutions to the neighboring islands. The experimental results show that our approach significatively outperforms all the island-based variants of the multi-objective evolutionary algorithm NSGA-II. We show that PasMoQAP is a suitable alternative to solve the Multi-Objective Quadratic Assignment Problem.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables.     A memetic particle swarm optimisation algorithm for dynamic multi-modal optimisation problems

    Copyright @ 2011 Taylor & Francis.Many real-world optimisation problems are both dynamic and multi-modal, which require an optimisation algorithm not only to find as many optima under a specific environment as possible, but also to track their moving trajectory over dynamic environments. To address this requirement, this article investigates a memetic computing approach based on particle swarm optimisation for dynamic multi-modal optimisation problems (DMMOPs). Within the framework of the proposed algorithm, a new speciation method is employed to locate and track multiple peaks and an adaptive local search method is also hybridised to accelerate the exploitation of species generated by the speciation method. In addition, a memory-based re-initialisation scheme is introduced into the proposed algorithm in order to further enhance its performance in dynamic multi-modal environments. Based on the moving peaks benchmark problems, experiments are carried out to investigate the performance of the proposed algorithm in comparison with several state-of-the-art algorithms taken from the literature.     Composing Distributed Data-intensive Web Services Using a Flexible Memetic Algorithm

    Web Service Composition (WSC) is a particularly promising application of Web services, where multiple individual services with specific functionalities are composed to accomplish a more complex task, which must fulfil functional requirements and optimise Quality of Service (QoS) attributes, simultaneously. Additionally, large quantities of data, produced by technological advances, need to be exchanged between services. Data-intensive Web services, which manipulate and deal with those data, are of great interest to implement data-intensive processes, such as distributed Data-intensive Web Service Composition (DWSC). Researchers have proposed Evolutionary Computing (EC) fully-automated WSC techniques that meet all the above factors. Some of these works employed Memetic Algorithms (MAs) to enhance the performance of EC through increasing its exploitation ability of in searching neighbourhood area of a solution. However, those works are not efficient or effective. This paper proposes an MA-based approach to solving the problem of distributed DWSC in an effective and efficient manner. In particular, we develop an MA that hybridises EC with a flexible local search technique incorporating distance of services. An evaluation using benchmark datasets is carried out, comparing existing state-of-the-art methods.     A Methodology to Evolve Cooperation in Pursuit Domain using Genetic Network Programming

    The design of strategies to devise teamwork and cooperation among agents is a central research issue in the field of multi-agent systems (MAS). The complexity of the cooperative strategy design can rise rapidly with increasing number of agents and their behavioral sophistication. The field of cooperative multi-agent learning promises solutions to such problems by attempting to discover agent behaviors as well as suggesting new approaches by applying machine learning techniques. Due to the difficulty in specifying a priori for an effective algorithm for multiple interacting agents, and the inherent adaptability of artificially evolved agents, recently, the use of evolutionary computation as a machining learning technique and a design process has received much attention. In this thesis, we design a methodology using an evolutionary computation technique called Genetic Network Programming (GNP) to automatically evolve teamwork and cooperation among agents in the pursuit domain. Simulation results show that our proposed methodology was effective in evolving teamwork and cooperation among agents. Compared with Genetic Programming approaches, its performance is significantly superior, its computation cost is less and the learning speed is faster. We also provide some analytical results of the proposed approach
