Martin's conjecture, arithmetic equivalence, and countable Borel equivalence relations
There is a fascinating interplay and overlap between recursion theory and
descriptive set theory. A particularly beautiful source of such interaction has
been Martin's conjecture on Turing invariant functions. This longstanding open
problem in recursion theory has connected to many problems in descriptive set
theory, particularly in the theory of countable Borel equivalence relations.
In this paper, we shall give an overview of some work that has been done on
Martin's conjecture, and applications that it has had in descriptive set
theory. We will present a long unpublished result of Slaman and Steel that
arithmetic equivalence is a universal countable Borel equivalence relation.
This theorem has interesting corollaries for the theory of universal countable
Borel equivalence relations in general. We end with some open problems, and
directions for future research.Comment: Corrected typo
Relations Between Graphs
Given two graphs G and H, we ask under which conditions there is a relation R
that generates the edges of H given the structure of graph G. This construction
can be seen as a form of multihomomorphism. It generalizes surjective
homomorphisms of graphs and naturally leads to notions of R-retractions,
R-cores, and R-cocores of graphs. Both R-cores and R-cocores of graphs are
unique up to isomorphism and can be computed in polynomial time.Comment: accepted by Ars Mathematica Contemporane
Inverse monoids of partial graph automorphisms
A partial automorphism of a finite graph is an isomorphism between its vertex
induced subgraphs. The set of all partial automorphisms of a given finite graph
forms an inverse monoid under composition (of partial maps). We describe the
algebraic structure of such inverse monoids by the means of the standard tools
of inverse semigroup theory, namely Green's relations and some properties of
the natural partial order, and give a characterization of inverse monoids which
arise as inverse monoids of partial graph automorphisms. We extend our results
to digraphs and edge-colored digraphs as well
Two-Variable Logic with Two Order Relations
It is shown that the finite satisfiability problem for two-variable logic
over structures with one total preorder relation, its induced successor
relation, one linear order relation and some further unary relations is
EXPSPACE-complete. Actually, EXPSPACE-completeness already holds for structures
that do not include the induced successor relation. As a special case, the
EXPSPACE upper bound applies to two-variable logic over structures with two
linear orders. A further consequence is that satisfiability of two-variable
logic over data words with a linear order on positions and a linear order and
successor relation on the data is decidable in EXPSPACE. As a complementing
result, it is shown that over structures with two total preorder relations as
well as over structures with one total preorder and two linear order relations,
the finite satisfiability problem for two-variable logic is undecidable
