This paper describes a structured review framework for managing business performance. The framework entails the review of both business performance, including thestrategic relevance of the measures, as well as the efficiency and effectiveness of the performance measurement system itself. A range of approaches and tools are employed in the framework which features a review card providing a high level view of the review process, showing the different types of review perspectives and their interactions

PERFORMANCE IMPACTS OF BIG DATA ANALYTICS

    Get PDF
Big Data Analytics has been a ‘hot topic’ for industry and academic during the past few years. This paper examines what constitutes Big Data Analytics (BDA) and how it relates to organizational performance. It also investigates what other factors influence this relationship, whether BDA leads to more data-driven decision-making (DDDM) and whether the latter is really superior to less informed decision-making. The study first operationalizes Big Data Analytics, and then develops a research model which manifests the direct and indirect relationships between analytic capability, DDDM, and organizational performance

As countries turn in to Smart Nations, Infocom Technology plays a key role in enhancing their competitiveness through high skilled workforces. Reaching to younger generations and attracting them to computing programs such as Information Systems (IS) and Computer Science (CS) is a key challenge faced by universities. Many high-quality students from junior colleges either don\u27t choose IS programs or choose IS programs as their last option during the application process. A school of Information Systems (SIS) from a large metropolitan university decided to implement an innovative outreach program to attract high quality high school aka Junior College (JC) students. JC or high school students are those in 2-year program that transfers them to the 4-year university degree. In this project, we took a design thinking approach which enabled us to analyse the output of each stage of the design thinking process and make informed decisions for implementation. Our empathy stage showed that only 5% of top JC students were aware of Information Systems and we attribute this as the root cause of low numbers and quality of applications into IS schools. With empathy study and analysis, we ideated and implemented an innovative camp to bring awareness of IS to JC students. A team of twenty-nine faculty and staff worked on a project for twelve months and we have seen significant improvements in the number and quality of applications. This paper provides useful insights into using design thinking to re-engineer student outreach programs that can enhance the number and quality of applicants to a university program. We share the methodology, the details of each stage, and the outcomes of each stage

Enhancing Information Security Risk Management with Security Analytics: A Dynamic Capabilities Perspective

    Get PDF
The importance of information security risk management (ISRM) and its potential strategic role in protecting organisational information assets is widely studied in literature. Less attention is given to how ISRM can be enhanced using security analytics to contribute to a competitive advantage. This paper proposes a model showing that security analytics capabilities (the ability to effectively use security data for informed security related decision making) and ISRM capabilities (the ability to effectively identify and protect organizational information assets) indirectly influence competitive advantage in ISRM through two key mediating links: analytics-enabled ISRM capabilities (the ability to effectively leverage insights gleaned from security data to make informed ISRM decisions) and ISRM dynamic capabilities (the ability to reconfigure analytics-enabled ISRM capabilities to address turbulent environments). Environmental turbulence moderates the process by which security analytics and ISRM capabilities influence competitive advantage. The paper concludes by calling for evaluation and refinement of the research model

Journal Self-Citation VI: Forced Journal Self-Citation – Common, Appropriate, Ethical?

    Get PDF
Forced journal self-citation, as defined in this paper, has serious implications for the IS field. We introduce a statistical perspective on how common the practice is, discuss whether it is appropriate or not, and evaluate its ethicality. We find that journal self-citations do influence journal impact factors, a measure of journal quality and a tool for many schools in their promotion and tenure process. We suggest that forced self-citations are not considered appropriate by community standards nor are they ethical in terms of the greatest good. We therefore propose that impact factors be disseminated both with and without self-citations to make the practice of forced self-citation more transparent to the IS community. An example of the proposal is shown

The Impact of IT Governance on Organizational Performance

    Get PDF
IT governance, as a subset of corporate governance, consists of organizational structures and processes that ensure theorganization’s IT can sustain and extend the organization’s strategies and objectives. In previous research, different types ofIT governance have been proposed. However, it is not clear how different governance types affect firm performance andwhat are the theories underlying the causal relationships. Drawing from strategic alignment and coordination theories, aresearch model is proposed for investigating how intra-organizational coordination could help build goal congruence throughstrategic alignment and hence achieve higher organizational performance. The purpose of this research is to examine therelationship between IT governance, strategic alignment, and organizational performance. Data collected from 167Taiwanese firms were used to empirically evaluate the theoretical relationships proposed in the research model, and theresults show that strategic alignment is a major factor that mediates the effect of IT governance on firm performance

Recommendations for enhancing consumer safe food management behaviour with smartphone technology

    Get PDF
Addressing consumer food safety risks through transdisciplinary research efforts highlight the importance of leveraging the affordances of smartphone technology. However, existing smartphone apps are limited by having safe food management (SFM) information in silos, gaps in context-based user experience research and insufficient evidence that portrays comprehensive evaluation. This paper reports on a research, which aimed to investigate how the affordances of smartphone technology can be leveraged to enhance the provision of information and facilitate knowledge retention to improve SFM behaviours. The findings produce key recommendations for improving information campaigns that aim to enhance SFM behaviour. It reveals that emerging software design approaches should be leveraged while incorporating context-based design principles in apps for SFM information campaigns. It further reveals that consumers should be prompted with multiple cues to revisit SFM apps for knowledge reinforcement. Finally, it highlights the importance of a consumer-centric approach to the development of SFM information campaign

Corporate governance, customer satisfaction, and profitability were the proxy variables used to determine firm performance. The relationship among the variables was subsequently tested by multiple regression. The outcomes exhibited the positive relationships among them

From "best practice" to "best fit": a framework for designing and analyzing pluralistic agricultural advisory services worldwide

    Get PDF
"The paper develops a framework for the design and analysis of pluralistic agricultural advisory services and reviews research methods from different disciplines that can be used when applying the framework. Agricultural advisory services are defined in the paper as the entire set of organizations that support and facilitate people engaged in agricultural production to solve problems and to obtain information, skills and technologies to improve their livelihoods and well-being... To classify pluralistic agricultural advisory services, the paper distinguishes between organizations from the public, the private and the third sector that can be involved in (a) providing and (b) financing of agricultural advisory services. The framework for analyzing pluralistic agricultural advisory services presented in the paper addresses the need for analytical approaches that help policy-makers to identify those reform options that best fit country-specific frame conditions. Thus, the paper supports a shift from a “one-size-fits-all” to a “best fit” approach in the reform of public services... Based on a review of the literature, the paper presents a variety of quantitative and qualitative methodological approaches derived from different disciplines that can be applied when using the framework in empirical research projects. The disciplines include agricultural and institutional economics, communication theory, adult education, and public administration and management. The paper intends to inform researchers as well as practitioners, policy-makers and development partners who are interested in supporting evidence-based reform of agricultural advisory services. from Authors' AbstractAgricultural extension work, Pro-poor growth, Capacity strengthening,

Media Reinforcement for Psychological Empowerment in Chronic Disease Management

    Get PDF
Although information technology (IT) is often argued to have the potential to enable greater patient participation in healthcare delivery, how IT empowers patients to take charge of their own health is a less explored area. This study explores how IT-enabled communication plays a significant role in shaping the patients’ psychological empowerment for managing a chronic disease—diabetes. Psychological empowerment reflects a patient’s cognitive response and motivation to manage the disease. Two dimensions of psychological empowerment relevant in the context of chronic disease management (e.g., meaning as manifested through perceived education benefits and self-awareness to enable self-efficacy for effective management) are suggested to have positive effects on life changing interventions and patient satisfaction. We argue that the medium of communication between the patients and providers influences the psychological empowerment. Media reinforcement is, thus, hypothesized to impact the relationship between self-awareness and life changing interventions. The conceptual model is tested using archival data collected from a survey of seventy-eight patients that were involved in diabetes management education programs. The results indicate that rich media enabled by IT can play a significant role in patient empowerment, and influence the outcome of chronic disease management
