    Efficient trajectory of a car-like mobile robot

Emerald does not grant permission for this article to be further copied/distributed or hosted elsewhere without the express permission from Emerald Group Publishing Limited.[EN] Purpose The purpose is to create an algorithm that optimizes the trajectories that an autonomous vehicle must follow to reduce its energy consumption and reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. Design/methodology/approach An algorithm is presented that respects the dynamic constraints of the robot, including the characteristics of power delivery by the motor, the behaviour of the tires and the basic inertial parameters. Using quadratic sequential programming with distributed and non-monotonous search direction (Quadratic Programming Algorithm with Distributed and Non-Monotone Line Search), an optimization algorithm proposed and developed by Professor K. Schittkowski is implemented. Findings Relations between important operating variables have been obtained, such as the evolution of the autonomous vehicle's velocity, the driving torque supplied by the engine and the forces acting on the tires. In a subsequent analysis, the aim is to analyse the relationship between trajectory made and energy consumed and calculate the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Also this method has been checked against another different methodology commented on in the references. Research limitations/implications The main limitation comes from the modelling that has been done. As greater is the mechanical systems analysed, more simplifying hypotheses should be introduced to solve the corresponding equations with the current computers. However, the solutions are obtained and they can be used qualitatively to draw conclusions. Practical implications One main objective is to obtain guidelines to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by reducing energy consumption in the realization of autonomous vehicles' trajectories. The first step to achieve that is to obtain a good model of the autonomous vehicle that takes into account not only its kinematics but also its dynamic properties, and to propose an optimization process that allows to minimize the energy consumed. In this paper, important relationships between work variables have been obtained. Social implications The idea is to be friendly with nature and the environment. This algorithm can help by reducing an instance of greenhouse gases.     Assessment of the Effect of Energy Consumption on Trajectory Improvement for a Car-like Robot

    [EN] Reducing the energy consumed by a car-like mobile robot makes it possible to move at a lower cost, yet it takes more working time. This paper proposes an optimization algorithm for trajectories with optimal times and analyzes the consequences of restricting the energy consumed on the trajectory obtained for a car-like robot. When modeling the dynamic behavior of the vehicle, it is necessary to consider its inertial parameters, the behavior of the motor, and the basic properties of the tire in its interaction with the ground. To obtain collision-free, minimum-time trajectories quadratic sequential optimization techniques are used, where the objective function is the time taken by the robot to move between two given configurations. This is subject to constraints relating to the vehicle and tires as well as the energy consumed, which is the basis for this paper. We work with a real random distribution of consumed energy values following a normal Gaussian distribution in order to analyze its influence on the trajectories obtained by the vehicle. The energy consumed, the time taken, the maximum velocity reached, and the distance traveled are analyzed in order to characterize the properties of the trajectories obtained. The proposed algorithm has been applied to 101 examples, showing that the computational times needed to obtain the solutions are always lower than those required to realize the trajectories.     Predicting Energy Consumption of Ground Robots On Uneven Terrains

    Optimizing energy consumption for robot navigation in fields requires energy-cost maps. However, obtaining such a map is still challenging, especially for large, uneven terrains. Physics-based energy models work for uniform, flat surfaces but do not generalize well to these terrains. Furthermore, slopes make the energy consumption at every location directional and add to the complexity of data collection and energy prediction. In this paper, we address these challenges in a data-driven manner. We consider a function which takes terrain geometry and robot motion direction as input and outputs expected energy consumption. The function is represented as a ResNet-based neural network whose parameters are learned from field-collected data. The prediction accuracy of our method is within 12% of the ground truth in our test environments that are unseen during training. We compare our method to a baseline method in the literature: a method using a basic physics-based model. We demonstrate that our method significantly outperforms it by more than 10% measured by the prediction error. More importantly, our method generalizes better when applied to test data from new environments with various slope angles and navigation directions

    Investigating the impact of energy source level on the self-guided vehicle system performances, in the Industry 4.0 context

    Automated industrial vehicles are taking an imposing place by transforming the industrial operations, and contributing to an efficient in-house transportation of goods. They are expected to bring a variety of benefits towards the Industry 4.0 transition. However, Self-Guided Vehicles (SGVs) are battery-powered, unmanned autonomous vehicles. While the operating durability depends on self-path design, planning energy-efficient paths become crucial. Thus, this paper has no concrete contribution but highlights the lack of energy consideration of SGV-system design in literature by presenting a review of energy-constrained global path planning. Then, an experimental investigation explores the long-term effect of battery level on navigation performance of a single vehicle. This experiment was conducted for several hours, a deviation between the global trajectory and the ground-true path executed by the SGV was observed as the battery depleted. The results show that the mean square error (MSE) increases significantly as the battery’s state-of-charge decreases below a certain value

    Mobile robotic network deployment for intruder detection and tracking

    This thesis investigates the problem of intruder detection and tracking using mobile robotic networks. In the first part of the thesis, we consider the problem of seeking an electromagnetic source using a team of robots that measure the local intensity of the emitted signal. We propose a planner for a team of robots based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) which is a population based stochastic optimization technique. An equivalence is established between particles generated in the traditional PSO technique, and the mobile agents in the swarm. Since the positions of the robots are updated using the PSO algorithm, modifications are required to implement the PSO algorithm on real robots to incorporate collision avoidance strategies. The modifications necessary to implement PSO on mobile robots, and strategies to adapt to real environments are presented in this thesis. Our results are also validated on an experimental testbed. In the second part, we present a game theoretic framework for visibility-based target tracking in multi-robot teams. A team of observers (pursuers) and a team of targets (evaders) are present in an environment with obstacles. The objective of the team of observers is to track the team of targets for the maximum possible time. While the objective of the team of targets is to escape (break line-of-sight) in the minimum time. We decompose the problem into two layers. At the upper level, each pursuer is allocated to an evader through a minimum cost allocation strategy based on the risk of each evader, thereby, decomposing the agents into multiple single pursuer-single evader pairs. Two decentralized allocation strategies are proposed and implemented in this thesis. At the lower level, each pursuer computes its strategy based on the results of the single pursuer-single evader target-tracking problem. We initially address this problem in an environment containing a semi-infinite obstacle with one corner. The pursuer\u27s optimal tracking strategy is obtained regardless of the evader\u27s strategy using techniques from optimal control theory and differential games. Next, we extend the result to an environment containing multiple polygonal obstacles. We construct a pursuit field to provide a guiding vector for the pursuer which is a weighted sum of several component vectors. The performance of different combinations of component vectors is investigated. Finally, we extend our work to address the case when the obstacles are not polygonal, and the observers have constraints in motion
