Energy-efficient broadcast in mobile networks subject to channel randomness
© 2002-2012 IEEE. Wireless communication in a network of mobile devices is a challenging and resource-demanding task, due to the highly dynamic network topology and the wireless channel randomness. This paper investigates information broadcast schemes in 2-D mobile ad hoc networks where nodes are initially randomly distributed and then move following a random direction mobility model. Based on an in-depth analysis of the popular susceptible-infectious-recovered epidemic broadcast scheme, this paper proposes a novel energy and bandwidth-efficient broadcast scheme, named the energy-efficient broadcast scheme, which is able to adapt to fast-changing network topology and channel randomness. Analytical results are provided to characterize the performance of the proposed scheme, including the fraction of nodes that can receive the information and the delay of the information dissemination process. The accuracy of analytical results is verified using simulations driven by both the random direction mobility model and a real-world trace
A Review of the Energy Efficient and Secure Multicast Routing Protocols for Mobile Ad hoc Networks
This paper presents a thorough survey of recent work addressing energy
efficient multicast routing protocols and secure multicast routing protocols in
Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs). There are so many issues and solutions which
witness the need of energy management and security in ad hoc wireless networks.
The objective of a multicast routing protocol for MANETs is to support the
propagation of data from a sender to all the receivers of a multicast group
while trying to use the available bandwidth efficiently in the presence of
frequent topology changes. Multicasting can improve the efficiency of the
wireless link when sending multiple copies of messages by exploiting the
inherent broadcast property of wireless transmission. Secure multicast routing
plays a significant role in MANETs. However, offering energy efficient and
secure multicast routing is a difficult and challenging task. In recent years,
various multicast routing protocols have been proposed for MANETs. These
protocols have distinguishing features and use different mechanismsComment: 15 page
Message and time efficient multi-broadcast schemes
We consider message and time efficient broadcasting and multi-broadcasting in
wireless ad-hoc networks, where a subset of nodes, each with a unique rumor,
wish to broadcast their rumors to all destinations while minimizing the total
number of transmissions and total time until all rumors arrive to their
destination. Under centralized settings, we introduce a novel approximation
algorithm that provides almost optimal results with respect to the number of
transmissions and total time, separately. Later on, we show how to efficiently
implement this algorithm under distributed settings, where the nodes have only
local information about their surroundings. In addition, we show multiple
approximation techniques based on the network collision detection capabilities
and explain how to calibrate the algorithms' parameters to produce optimal
results for time and messages.Comment: In Proceedings FOMC 2013, arXiv:1310.459
Emergent Overlays for Adaptive MANET Broadcast
Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks (MANETs) allow distributed applications where no fixed network infrastructure is available. MANETs use wireless communication subject to faults and uncertainty, and must support efficient broadcast. Controlled flooding is suitable for highly-dynamic networks, while overlay-based broadcast is suitable for dense and more static ones. Density and mobility vary significantly over a MANET deployment area. We present the design and implementation of emergent overlays for efficient and reliable broadcast in heterogeneous MANETs. This adaptation technique allows nodes to automatically switch from controlled flooding to the use of an overlay. Interoperability protocols support the integration of both protocols in a single heterogeneous system. Coordinated adaptation policies allow regions of nodes to autonomously and collectively emerge and dissolve overlays. Our simulation of the full network stack of 600 mobile nodes shows that emergent overlays reduce energy consumption, and improve reliability and coverage compared to single protocols and to two previously-proposed adaptation techniques
Overlapping Multi-hop Clustering for Wireless Sensor Networks
Clustering is a standard approach for achieving efficient and scalable
performance in wireless sensor networks. Traditionally, clustering algorithms
aim at generating a number of disjoint clusters that satisfy some criteria. In
this paper, we formulate a novel clustering problem that aims at generating
overlapping multi-hop clusters. Overlapping clusters are useful in many sensor
network applications, including inter-cluster routing, node localization, and
time synchronization protocols. We also propose a randomized, distributed
multi-hop clustering algorithm (KOCA) for solving the overlapping clustering
problem. KOCA aims at generating connected overlapping clusters that cover the
entire sensor network with a specific average overlapping degree. Through
analysis and simulation experiments we show how to select the different values
of the parameters to achieve the clustering process objectives. Moreover, the
results show that KOCA produces approximately equal-sized clusters, which
allows distributing the load evenly over different clusters. In addition, KOCA
is scalable; the clustering formation terminates in a constant time regardless
of the network size
A Review of Interference Reduction in Wireless Networks Using Graph Coloring Methods
The interference imposes a significant negative impact on the performance of
wireless networks. With the continuous deployment of larger and more
sophisticated wireless networks, reducing interference in such networks is
quickly being focused upon as a problem in today's world. In this paper we
analyze the interference reduction problem from a graph theoretical viewpoint.
A graph coloring methods are exploited to model the interference reduction
problem. However, additional constraints to graph coloring scenarios that
account for various networking conditions result in additional complexity to
standard graph coloring. This paper reviews a variety of algorithmic solutions
for specific network topologies.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
A Survey on Wireless Sensor Network Security
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have recently attracted a lot of interest in
the research community due their wide range of applications. Due to distributed
nature of these networks and their deployment in remote areas, these networks
are vulnerable to numerous security threats that can adversely affect their
proper functioning. This problem is more critical if the network is deployed
for some mission-critical applications such as in a tactical battlefield.
Random failure of nodes is also very likely in real-life deployment scenarios.
Due to resource constraints in the sensor nodes, traditional security
mechanisms with large overhead of computation and communication are infeasible
in WSNs. Security in sensor networks is, therefore, a particularly challenging
task. This paper discusses the current state of the art in security mechanisms
for WSNs. Various types of attacks are discussed and their countermeasures
presented. A brief discussion on the future direction of research in WSN
security is also included.Comment: 24 pages, 4 figures, 2 table
