Packaging technology enabling flexible optical interconnections
This paper reports on the latest trends and results on the integration of optical and opto-electronic devices and interconnections inside flexible carrier materials. Electrical circuits on flexible substrates are a very fast growing segment in electronics, but opto-electronics and optics should be able to follow these upcoming trends. This paper presents the back-thinning and packaging of single opto-electronic devices resulting in highly flexible and reliable packages. Optical waveguides and optical out-of-plane coupling structures are integrated inside the same layer stack, resulting in complete VCSEL-to-PD links with low total optical losses and high resistance to heat cycling and moisture exposure
Enabling learning through technology: Some institutional imperatives
This paper considers the importance of the institution as the dynamic interpretative element on which will depend the successful integration of the learning technology developed through our national initiatives into the academic curricula of Higher‐Education institutions. Based on our experience of working on teaching technology programmes, within the framework of national and institutional initiatives, it is evident that the establishment of an institutional strategy, and its implementation in a supporting university‐wide programme of staff development and training, together with strong commitment at the senior managerial level, are imperatives which determine the successful integration of learning technology within academic institutions
Microfluidics: an enabling technology for the life sciences
During the last year we have investigated existing and future markets, products and technologies for microfluidics in the life sciences. Within this paper we present some of the findings and discuss a major trend identified within this project: the development of microfluidic platforms for flexible design of application specific integrated microfluidic systems. We discuss two platforms in detail which are currently under development in our lab: microfluidics on a rotating CD ("Lab-CD") as well as a platform to realized customized "nanoliter & picoliter dispensing systems"

Increasing the Capacity of Primary Care Through Enabling Technology.
Primary care is the foundation of effective and high-quality health care. The role of primary care clinicians has expanded to encompass coordination of care across multiple providers and management of more patients with complex conditions. Enabling technology has the potential to expand the capacity for primary care clinicians to provide integrated, accessible care that channels expertise to the patient and brings specialty consultations into the primary care clinic. Furthermore, technology offers opportunities to engage patients in advancing their health through improved communication and enhanced self-management of chronic conditions. This paper describes enabling technologies in four domains (the body, the home, the community, and the primary care clinic) that can support the critical role primary care clinicians play in the health care system. It also identifies challenges to incorporating these technologies into primary care clinics, care processes, and workflow
Re-thinking technology and its growing role in enabling patient empowerment

The presence and increase of challenges to eHealth in today’s society have begun to generate doubts about the capability of technology in patient empowerment, especially within the frameworks supporting empowerment. Through the review of existing frameworks and articulation of patient demands, weaknesses in the current application of technology to support empowerment are explored, and key constituents of a technology-driven framework for patient empowerment are determined. This article argues that existing usage of technology in the design, development and implementation of patient empowerment in the healthcare system, although well intentioned, is insufficiently constituted, primarily as a result of fragmentation. Systems theory concepts such as holism and iteration are considered vital in improving the role of technology in enabling patient empowerment
A silicon backplane technology for microdisplays
A silicon backplane technology is described for the fabrication of high-resolution microdisplays. The technology is embedded in a 0.7 mum CMOS technology, and comprises DEMOS devices for enabling voltage spans of 12 V, and a special back-end processing module for planarizing the wafer and light shielding. This technology is used to develop a GXGA (2560times2048 pixels) microdisplay with 15 mum pixels on which the first results are reported
Power-by-the-hour: the role of technology in reshaping business strategy at Rolls-Royce
There is a recognised trend of manufacturing companies offering not only products, but services and even complete solutions to business problems. Research has highlighted economic, market demand and competitiveness factors as responsible for the re-shaping of business strategies that this has involved. This study analyses the extent to which another factor, technology, has been a significant factor in the switch from product oriented to service oriented strategies. A case study of the aero engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce is used to analyse the impact of technology, which is found to have led manufacturers to re-shape their business strategies. The study finds that developments in one technology in particular, namely digital electronics, have been a powerful enabling factor facilitating the implementation of service strategies. This provided original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) like Rolls-Royce with a competitive advantage relative to conventional service providers, by enabling them to acquire new knowledge management capabilities
Flip-chip assembly of an integrated optical sensor
For enabling low cost mass production for photonic circuits, the application of flipchip technology creates huge expectations. We report on the results of a project, having the goal to demonstrate standard packaging technology in combination with integrated optics, entailing demands and limitations different from IC technology. Mainly fiber attachment, but also special features as sensor window accessibility at the top-side of the chip are prohibiting the positioning of the optical layer stack and solder pads at the same side of the silicon wafer. Therefore, feed through technology had to be included. Compatibility issues in combining feed through technology with integrated optics processing have been solved and the feasibility of feed-through metallization and flip-chip assembly in combination with an integrated optical sensor has been demonstrated
Towards the development of the supply chain of concentrated solar power
This work focuses on the investigation into the planning of renewable energy power plants in Brazil using the Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) technology. The main aim of the paper is to present an analysis of the planning process that can be used as a basis of the development of a method to assess the Brazilian’s local manufacturing and supply chain capabilities in supporting the deployment of the CSP technology. The paper identifies areas in which the concerted efforts should be emphasized. For this, the paper will first discuss the key components of the chosen CSP technology (in this case the parabolic through). The manufacturing processes of these components will subsequently be analyzed and the key enabling technologies will be determined. The demands of electricity will be estimated using the System Advisory Model®, a modelling tool developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). An assessment method will finally be proposed to identify the potentials of the local Brazilian supply chain, through the readiness evaluation of the key enabling technologies and manufacturing processes
