Managing Uncertainty: A Case for Probabilistic Grid Scheduling
The Grid technology is evolving into a global, service-orientated
architecture, a universal platform for delivering future high demand
computational services. Strong adoption of the Grid and the utility computing
concept is leading to an increasing number of Grid installations running a wide
range of applications of different size and complexity. In this paper we
address the problem of elivering deadline/economy based scheduling in a
heterogeneous application environment using statistical properties of job
historical executions and its associated meta-data. This approach is motivated
by a study of six-month computational load generated by Grid applications in a
multi-purpose Grid cluster serving a community of twenty e-Science projects.
The observed job statistics, resource utilisation and user behaviour is
discussed in the context of management approaches and models most suitable for
supporting a probabilistic and autonomous scheduling architecture
Enabling Adaptive Grid Scheduling and Resource Management
Wider adoption of the Grid concept has led to an increasing amount of federated
computational, storage and visualisation resources being available to scientists and
researchers. Distributed and heterogeneous nature of these resources renders most of the
legacy cluster monitoring and management approaches inappropriate, and poses new
challenges in workflow scheduling on such systems. Effective resource utilisation monitoring
and highly granular yet adaptive measurements are prerequisites for a more efficient Grid
scheduler. We present a suite of measurement applications able to monitor per-process
resource utilisation, and a customisable tool for emulating observed utilisation models. We
also outline our future work on a predictive and probabilistic Grid scheduler. The research is

Grid Resource Management) in cooperation with BT
The Profiling Potential of Computer Vision and the Challenge of Computational Empiricism
Computer vision and other biometrics data science applications have commenced
a new project of profiling people. Rather than using 'transaction generated
information', these systems measure the 'real world' and produce an assessment
of the 'world state' - in this case an assessment of some individual trait.
Instead of using proxies or scores to evaluate people, they increasingly deploy
a logic of revealing the truth about reality and the people within it. While
these profiling knowledge claims are sometimes tentative, they increasingly
suggest that only through computation can these excesses of reality be captured
and understood. This article explores the bases of those claims in the systems
of measurement, representation, and classification deployed in computer vision.
It asks if there is something new in this type of knowledge claim, sketches an
account of a new form of computational empiricism being operationalised, and
questions what kind of human subject is being constructed by these
technological systems and practices. Finally, the article explores legal
mechanisms for contesting the emergence of computational empiricism as the
dominant knowledge platform for understanding the world and the people within
it
Taming Uncertainty in the Assurance Process of Self-Adaptive Systems: a Goal-Oriented Approach
Goals are first-class entities in a self-adaptive system (SAS) as they guide
the self-adaptation. A SAS often operates in dynamic and partially unknown
environments, which cause uncertainty that the SAS has to address to achieve
its goals. Moreover, besides the environment, other classes of uncertainty have
been identified. However, these various classes and their sources are not
systematically addressed by current approaches throughout the life cycle of the
SAS. In general, uncertainty typically makes the assurance provision of SAS
goals exclusively at design time not viable. This calls for an assurance
process that spans the whole life cycle of the SAS. In this work, we propose a
goal-oriented assurance process that supports taming different sources (within
different classes) of uncertainty from defining the goals at design time to
performing self-adaptation at runtime. Based on a goal model augmented with
uncertainty annotations, we automatically generate parametric symbolic formulae
with parameterized uncertainties at design time using symbolic model checking.
These formulae and the goal model guide the synthesis of adaptation policies by
engineers. At runtime, the generated formulae are evaluated to resolve the
uncertainty and to steer the self-adaptation using the policies. In this paper,
we focus on reliability and cost properties, for which we evaluate our approach
on the Body Sensor Network (BSN) implemented in OpenDaVINCI. The results of the
validation are promising and show that our approach is able to systematically
tame multiple classes of uncertainty, and that it is effective and efficient in
providing assurances for the goals of self-adaptive systems
