Embedding based on function approximation for large scale image search
The objective of this paper is to design an embedding method that maps local
features describing an image (e.g. SIFT) to a higher dimensional representation
useful for the image retrieval problem. First, motivated by the relationship
between the linear approximation of a nonlinear function in high dimensional
space and the stateof-the-art feature representation used in image retrieval,
i.e., VLAD, we propose a new approach for the approximation. The embedded
vectors resulted by the function approximation process are then aggregated to
form a single representation for image retrieval. Second, in order to make the
proposed embedding method applicable to large scale problem, we further derive
its fast version in which the embedded vectors can be efficiently computed,
i.e., in the closed-form. We compare the proposed embedding methods with the
state of the art in the context of image search under various settings: when
the images are represented by medium length vectors, short vectors, or binary
vectors. The experimental results show that the proposed embedding methods
outperform existing the state of the art on the standard public image retrieval
benchmarks.Comment: Accepted to TPAMI 2017. The implementation and precomputed features

Stochastic Optimization for Deep CCA via Nonlinear Orthogonal Iterations
Deep CCA is a recently proposed deep neural network extension to the
traditional canonical correlation analysis (CCA), and has been successful for
multi-view representation learning in several domains. However, stochastic
optimization of the deep CCA objective is not straightforward, because it does
not decouple over training examples. Previous optimizers for deep CCA are
either batch-based algorithms or stochastic optimization using large
minibatches, which can have high memory consumption. In this paper, we tackle
the problem of stochastic optimization for deep CCA with small minibatches,
based on an iterative solution to the CCA objective, and show that we can
achieve as good performance as previous optimizers and thus alleviate the
memory requirement.Comment: in 2015 Annual Allerton Conference on Communication, Control and

Speaker verification using sequence discriminant support vector machines
This paper presents a text-independent speaker verification system using support vector machines (SVMs) with score-space kernels. Score-space kernels generalize Fisher kernels and are based on underlying generative models such as Gaussian mixture models (GMMs). This approach provides direct discrimination between whole sequences, in contrast with the frame-level approaches at the heart of most current systems. The resultant SVMs have a very high dimensionality since it is related to the number of parameters in the underlying generative model. To address problems that arise in the resultant optimization we introduce a technique called spherical normalization that preconditions the Hessian matrix. We have performed speaker verification experiments using the PolyVar database. The SVM system presented here reduces the relative error rates by 34% compared to a GMM likelihood ratio system
