State-space average modelling of 18-pulse diode rectifier
The paper presents an averaged-value model of the direct symmetric topology of 18-pulse
autotransformer AC-DC rectifiers. The model captures the key features of the dynamic characteristics of the
rectifiers, while being time invariant and computationally efficient. The developed models, validated by
comparison of the resultant transient and steady state behaviours with those obtained from detailed simulations
can, therefore, be used for stability assessment of electric power systems with diode rectifiers, multiple power
electronic converter-controlled loads and electrical drives
Power Extraction Strategy of a Robust kW Range Marine Tidal Turbine Based on Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators and Passive Rectifiers
This paper presents a kW range marine tidal current power generation system consisting of a fixed pitch marine current turbine (MCT) with two permanent magnet synchronous generators in the turbine shaft, two diode rectifiers (each rectifier is associated with a permanent magnet synchronous generator) and a DC source voltage. This system is designed for a kW range robust power supply. The specificity of the proposed system is that the two generators have different numbers of turns in their windings and the two rectifiers are in parallel in the same DC source. It has been demonstrated that the proposed system is able to harness very efficiently the energy of the turbine in the whole tidal cycle. The proposed system is interesting because it does not need complex control system and it allows minimizing converter losses costs due to electronic devices as controlled IGBT PWM converters usually used in conventional power generation systems. The analytical results have been confirmed numerically using PSIM software for two kW range generators with the same magnetic circuit and different winding number of turns
Solidifying Power Electronics [Historical]
More than one century ago, in 1902, American engineer Peter Cooper Hewitt (1861–1921) derived the mercury arc-rectifier, enclosed in a glass bulb, from his mercury-vapor lamp of the previous year. He devised its use for feeding dc motors from alternating currents. As the first rectifier for power uses (two years before Fleming’s diode and four before De Forest’s audion [1]), the mercury arc-rectifier marked the birth of power electronics
Impact of Repair Joints in Fencing Wire on Data Communications: How to Receive Radio and Block Data using No. 8 Wire
Modern electric fences have remote controls and remote monitors that communicate with the energizer through the active fence wire. This manuscript looks at the impact of repair joints on the data communications between energizer and remotes. We report measurements of nonlinear rust-induced characteristics in joints and we draw conclusions about their effects in the context of an electric fence carrying data communications signals. We furthermore demonstrate how their nonlinear characteristics can cause mixing and detection effects that could account for radio reception
Multilevel Converters: An Enabling Technology for High-Power Applications
| Multilevel converters are considered today as the
state-of-the-art power-conversion systems for high-power and
power-quality demanding applications. This paper presents a
tutorial on this technology, covering the operating principle and
the different power circuit topologies, modulation methods,
technical issues and industry applications. Special attention is
given to established technology already found in industry with
more in-depth and self-contained information, while recent
advances and state-of-the-art contributions are addressed with
useful references. This paper serves as an introduction to the
subject for the not-familiarized reader, as well as an update or
reference for academics and practicing engineers working in
the field of industrial and power electronics.Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología DPI2001-3089Ministerio de Eduación y Ciencia d TEC2006-0386
Computational Analysis of a Spiral Thermoelectric Nanoantenna for Solar Energy Harvesting Applications
Thermo-electrical nanoantennas have been proposed as an alternative option
for conversion solar energy harvesting applications. In this work, the response
of a spiral broadband antenna has been obtained from numerical and theoretical
simulations perspectives. The results show that this device exhibits a
responsivity of 20mV/W under 117W/cm2, for a single-frequency radiation. We
discuss strategies for enhanced efficiency
