Private forest owners view of silviculture forestry measures
skogsvårdens betydelse i större utsträckning.
Private forest owners constitute the largest ownership group in Sweden, with a forest holding
corresponding to 48 %, which causes this group to play a crucial role in the forest industry’s raw
material supply. Studies have shown that minor improvements in planning and execution of the
silvicultural management could increase the productivity by 40 %. The objective of the study was
to describe the private forest owners’ view of silviculture measures, more specifically how they
relate to scarification, regeneration and clearing and how these are planned and executed. A survey
was conducted based on a population of private forest owners currently existing in Holmen’s
customer records. The response rate was 38 % (2116 people) and the answers show the following
results:
Most of the private forest owners view silviculture measures as a financial investment that creates
well-managed forests. The implementation degree of the silviculture measures was high. However
significant differences were found in the statistical analyzes:
Male respondents show a higher implementation degree than female respondents.
Business-oriented respondents show a higher implementation degree than respondents who
prioritize ecological/recreational values.
Respondents with possession of a forestry plan show a higher implementation degree than
respondents who lack a forestry plan.
The service procurement is carried out in a satisfactory manner, but the forest consultant should
emphasize the importance of the management to a greater extent.
Price, previous experience and the forest consultant’s commitment and guidance are aspects that the
respondents emphasize as important when choosing an external actor in connection with the
procurement of forest management services. Most of the respondents emphasize that the quality of
previously performed measures plays a decisive role in the actor’s chance of future business.
The result shows a demand of alternative silvicultural management services, which are currently not
provided by the forest companies/owners’ associations. A demand of silvicultural management
package-solutions was identified.
Private forest owners show a limited forest knowledge and a negative development in this area.
Significant differences were found in the statistical analyzes:
Male respondents consider themselves to possess a higher forest knowledge than female
respondents.
Åbor consider themselves to possess a higher forest knowledge than female respondents.
To acquire theoretical and practical knowledge, private forest owners demand more guidance and
forest education
Helsingborg is currently (2018) conducting a city rejuvenation project in which it aims to densify and rejuvenate as well as increase the social status of the million programme neighbourhood Drottninghög. As Paul Stouten points out, neighbourhood rejuvenation can be used as a strategy to displace citizens with undesired social and economic status. The aim of this essay is to investigate if such hidden intentions are present in the rejuvenation of Drottninghög. This will be done through a comparison between what was agreed during the civic dialogues and whether that translated to the transformations taking place in the area today. Further the essay will investigate the residents of Drottninghög’s perception of the area concurs with what is written in the planning documents to further highlight potential hidden intentions with the rejuvenation project. This will be done through interviews with members of the very successful project called Neighbourhood Moms (Stadsdelsmammor) as a key aspect of being a Neighbourhood Mom is having an extended social network. The empirical data will primarily be analysed through the lens of Wirtén’s argument of power relations between inner city areas and outer city areas, as well as Leonie Sandercock’s theory on social planning and the concept of neoliberal planning. The essay shows that there is a disconnect between the result of the civic dialogues, the neighbourhood moms’ opinion on what the major issues of the area is, and what is currently being built in Drottninghög. The findings of this essay highlights a need to further investigate the role of civic dialogues in the planning process and how they can be better utilised
MalmoeLund is one of the three large metropolitan regions in Sweden. Compared with Stockholm and Gothenburg, the region has the lowest regional growth. The decision to establish ESS and MAX IV in Lund has brought great opportunities for the region. To take advantage of possible spin-off effects, which among other things can lead to new job opportunities for the region's overall population, extensive collaboration at the regional level is required. There is a major responsibility of the municipalities to include planning, where conditions to be able to receive population growth and opportunities for business creation must exist. The well-functioning infrastructure conflates the region’s municipalities and creates a comprehensive housing and labor market which facilitates economic activity. If the municipalities cannot offer a wide selection of accommodation and premises for new businesses, the region may miss out on potential economic growth. Investment in education is a priority to create a knowledge-intensive labor to attract new companies to the region. Moreover, the region is already known to be a knowledge-based cluster and ESS and MAX IV could further enhance the regions position as a global hub for research and industry
Tillväxtstrategier i Simrishamns kommun - Regional utveckling och flerkärnig delaktighet
This paper looks into Simrishamn municipality in the southeastern part of the Scania region, Sweden. The investigation starts with the polycentric ideas of Scania that identifies 7 cities of certain criteria that are considered growth poles. The idea is that the smaller municipalities and cities will get the benefits after, e.g. Trickle down effects. This investigation tells us that Simrishamn reaches only 2 out of 3 criteria and therefore is not considered a growth pole. This due to the small number of inhabitants and with no outlook to reach the requested amount in the near future. Instead, this paper investigates the internal strengths of the municipality and the opportunities for development without regional participation. Three strategies are presented and discussed; firstly is development through trickle-down effects, from innovative centers like Malmö and Lund where Simrishamn is in the role of recipient supposed to make the environment as developed as possible. Secondly I discuss cooperation between municipalities in southeastern Scania where four small municipalities together can make a stronger case and a force to reckon with. Thirdly is the questioning of the urban interpretative prerogative where I see the agenda as set by the bigger cities. Here we can see how Simrishamn can offer an alternative to the urban agenda
Malmö has evolved from being an industrial city to its current profile as a knowledge and event city. As new visions and objectives are being set, there is a common theme which the city works very strongly for – a sustainable development. This essay aims to investigate the accessibility to and with public transports in Malmö in view of the city’s objective to decrease the use of cars, increase the number of sustainable transports and make the city more available for everyone and in this way increase participation in society. The study is based on a quantitative analysis using the GIS method with the aim to measure accessibility The concepts sustainable travelling and social exclusion are used to explain how a good, accessible public transport can contribute to the results. The results of the study shows that there are significant differences between the central regions compared to the middle and outer areas when it comes to accessibility to key locations in the city. The trend is that the share with good access to public transport is highest in central Malmö and is then reduced the further from the center you get, with a few atypical cases. The access to city buses with higher frequency also follows this pattern, even if there are atypical cases. The empirical data are based on quantitative data from written documents from Skånetrafiken and Malmö as well as data from Lantmätareiet and the Department of Human Geography at Lund University. Quantitative data constitute the basis for the GIS analyzes. Theory about accessibility and how it is measured as well as the concepts social exclusion and sustainable travel are used to analyze and interpret the empirical material
Voodoo Child
In this paper I examine the reasons on why some poor countries seem to achieve economic growth, while some others do not. Can we decide which country that will succeed beforehand, or is it simply a matter of policy? I take my starting point in the economist Jeffrey D. Sachs framework on why nations are failing in achieving economic growth, and apply those classifications on the comparative case of Haiti and the Dominican Republic to try to examine any divergences. The comparison between Haiti and the Dominican Republic is an interesting one. Not only do they share the island Hispaniola in the Caribbean, they also share a colonial heritage, years of political instability and being hosts of two of the most evil dictators Latin America ever has seen, Rafael Trujillo and Francois Duvalier. They also shared an economic development rate up until the 1960s, when something suddenly happened, and during the course of 50 years, Dominican Republic has almost tripled their BNP per capita while Haiti has halved theirs. My main purpose in this study is to analyze variables such as poverty, geography, fiscal policies, governance, culture, geopolitics, innovations and investments, demographics and emigration to see if they can explain the economic divergence between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. My results suggests that different policy decisions and bad governance are the main reason behind the divergence between these two countries
The post-pandemic city : covid-19 and its possible effects on urban planning in a Swedish context
This study examines whether there are signs of change in the urban
planning trends that were already prevalent before Covid-19 when the
pandemic brought about a higher degree of remote work as well as
potentially changed migration patterns and housing preferences. Previous
trends that have been relevant on a national and global level are ecological,
economic and social sustainability with a focus on the climate, but the
pandemic may have brought to life certain demands that the future
appearance of cities should promote public health as well, which may go
against future plans about the ecologically sustainable alternative,
densification. Using, among other things, overview plans from Sweden's
three largest cities, it is possible to discern that the dense, multifunctional
neighborhoods with developed pedestrian and bicycle networks and wellintegrated
green infrastructure are growing trends. These trends can also
be found internationally and it is difficult to say that these will change
especially much with the pandemic. Some believe that these trends will gain
even more focus, a few believe that they will lose some popularity. There is
a fear that offices that today decorate the city centers in all major cities in
Sweden will echo empty, but with what is presented in the study, it is not
possible to distinguish whether the need for office space will decrease after
the pandemic. These premises may also be given other purposes or new
designs that promote public health. With regard to future housing, certain
migration patterns can be seen that indicate that metropolitan regions are
losing residents and that more people are looking for individual houses
during the pandemic. But whether this is a new green wave or a temporary
trend cannot be determined either. The only thing that can be said is that
the pandemic has caused people to reevaluate their surroundings and the
need for green spaces
