A Sensing Error Aware MAC Protocol for Cognitive Radio Networks
Cognitive radios (CR) are intelligent radio devices that can sense the radio
environment and adapt to changes in the radio environment. Spectrum sensing and
spectrum access are the two key CR functions. In this paper, we present a
spectrum sensing error aware MAC protocol for a CR network collocated with
multiple primary networks. We explicitly consider both types of sensing errors
in the CR MAC design, since such errors are inevitable for practical spectrum
sensors and more important, such errors could have significant impact on the
performance of the CR MAC protocol. Two spectrum sensing polices are presented,
with which secondary users collaboratively sense the licensed channels. The
sensing policies are then incorporated into p-Persistent CSMA to coordinate
opportunistic spectrum access for CR network users. We present an analysis of
the interference and throughput performance of the proposed CR MAC, and find
the analysis highly accurate in our simulation studies. The proposed sensing
error aware CR MAC protocol outperforms two existing approaches with
considerable margins in our simulations, which justify the importance of
considering spectrum sensing errors in CR MAC design.Comment: 21 page, technical repor
Adaptive Importance Sampling for Performance Evaluation and Parameter Optimization of Communication Systems
We present new adaptive importance sampling techniques based on stochastic Newton recursions. Their applicability to the performance evaluation of communication systems is studied. Besides bit-error rate (BER) estimation, the techniques are used for system parameter optimization. Two system models that are analytically tractable are employed to demonstrate the validity of the techniques. As an application to situations that are analytically intractable and numerically intensive, the influence of crosstalk in a wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) crossconnect is assessed. In order to consider a realistic system model, optimal setting of thresholds in the detector is carried out while estimating error rate performances. Resulting BER estimates indicate that the tolerable crosstalk levels are significantly higher than predicted in the literature. This finding has a strong impact on the design of WDM networks. Power penalties induced by the addition of channels can also be accurately predicted in short run-time

Results for Channel Error Profiles for DECT
This letter presents the main statistical characterization
of the underlying error process obtained in the case of
the Digital European Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) radio
system. By simulation of the transmission link, error sequences
are generated for different channel parameters. Relevant statistics
are then computed for the purpose of efficient channel coding
design and evaluation
Saturation Throughput Analysis of IEEE 802.11 in Presence of Non Ideal Transmission Channel and Capture Effects
In this paper, we provide a saturation throughput analysis of the IEEE 802.11
protocol at the data link layer by including the impact of both transmission
channel and capture effects in Rayleigh fading environment. Impacts of both
non-ideal channel and capture effects, specially in an environment of high
interference, become important in terms of the actual observed throughput. As
far as the 4-way handshaking mechanism is concerned, we extend the
multi-dimensional Markovian state transition model characterizing the behavior
at the MAC layer by including transmission states that account for packet
transmission failures due to errors caused by propagation through the channel.
This way, any channel model characterizing the physical transmission medium can
be accommodated, including AWGN and fading channels. We also extend the Markov
model in order to consider the behavior of the contention window when employing
the basic 2-way handshaking mechanism.
Under the usual assumptions regarding the traffic generated per node and
independence of packet collisions, we solve for the stationary probabilities of
the Markov chain and develop expressions for the saturation throughput as a
function of the number of terminals, packet sizes, raw channel error rates,
capture probability, and other key system parameters. The theoretical
derivations are then compared to simulation results confirming the
effectiveness of the proposed models.Comment: To appear on IEEE Transactions on Communications, 200
Congestion probabilities in CDMA-based networks supporting batched Poisson traffic
We propose a new multirate teletraffic loss model for the calculation of time and call congestion probabilities in CDMA-based networks that accommodate calls of different serviceclasses whose arrival follows a batched Poisson process. The latter is more "peaked" and "bursty" than the ordinary Poisson process. The acceptance of calls in the system is based on the partial batch blocking discipline. This policy accepts a part of the batch (one or more calls) and discards the rest if the available resources are not enough to accept the whole batch. The proposed model takes into account the multiple access interference, the notion of local (soft) blocking, user’s activity and the interference cancellation. Although the analysis of the model does not lead to a product form solution of the steady state probabilities, we show that the calculation of the call-level performance metrics, time and call congestion probabilities, can be based on approximate but recursive formulas. The accuracy of the proposed formulas are verified through simulation and found to be quite satisfactory
