    A clustering particle swarm optimizer for locating and tracking multiple optima in dynamic environments

This requires an optimization algorithm to not only find the global optimal solution under a specific environment but also to track the trajectory of the changing optima over dynamic environments. To address this requirement, this paper investigates a clustering particle swarm optimizer (PSO) for dynamic optimization problems. This algorithm employs a hierarchical clustering method to locate and track multiple peaks. A fast local search method is also introduced to search optimal solutions in a promising subregion found by the clustering method. Experimental study is conducted based on the moving peaks benchmark to test the performance of the clustering PSO in comparison with several state-of-the-art algorithms from the literature. The experimental results show the efficiency of the clustering PSO for locating and tracking multiple optima in dynamic environments in comparison with other particle swarm optimization models based on the multiswarm method.This work was supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council of U.K., under Grant EP/E060722/1

This requires that optimization algorithms need to not only find the global optimal solution but also track the trajectory of the changing global best solution in a dynamic environment. To achieve this, this paper proposes a clustering particle swarm optimizer (CPSO) for dynamic optimization problems. The algorithm employs hierarchical clustering method to track multiple peaks based on a nearest neighbor search strategy. A fast local search method is also proposed to find the near optimal solutions in a local promising region in the search space. Six test problems generated from a generalized dynamic benchmark generator (GDBG) are used to test the performance of the proposed algorithm.     Adaptive multimodal continuous ant colony optimization

    Seeking multiple optima simultaneously, which multimodal optimization aims at, has attracted increasing attention but remains challenging. Taking advantage of ant colony optimization algorithms in preserving high diversity, this paper intends to extend ant colony optimization algorithms to deal with multimodal optimization. First, combined with current niching methods, an adaptive multimodal continuous ant colony optimization algorithm is introduced. In this algorithm, an adaptive parameter adjustment is developed, which takes the difference among niches into consideration. Second, to accelerate convergence, a differential evolution mutation operator is alternatively utilized to build base vectors for ants to construct new solutions. Then, to enhance the exploitation, a local search scheme based on Gaussian distribution is self-adaptively performed around the seeds of niches. Together, the proposed algorithm affords a good balance between exploration and exploitation. Extensive experiments on 20 widely used benchmark multimodal functions are conducted to investigate the influence of each algorithmic component and results are compared with several state-of-the-art multimodal algorithms and winners of competitions on multimodal optimization. These comparisons demonstrate the competitive efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, especially in dealing with complex problems with high numbers of local optima

    The role of controllability in optimizing quantum dynamics

    This paper discusses the important role of controllability played on the complexity of optimizing quantum mechanical control systems. The study is based on a topology analysis of the corresponding quantum control landscape, which is referred to as the optimization objective as a functional of control fields. We find that the degree of controllability is closely relevant with the ruggedness of the landscape, which determines the search efficiency for global optima. This effect is demonstrated via the gate fidelity control landscape of a system whose controllability is restricted on a SU(2) dynamic symmetry group. We show that multiple local false traps (i.e., non-global suboptima) exist even if the target gate is realizable and that the number of these traps is increased by the loss of controllability, while the controllable systems are always devoid of false traps.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure

    Expedited Globalized Antenna Optimization by Principal Components and Variable-Fidelity EM Simulations: Application to Microstrip Antenna Design

    Publisher's version (útgefin grein)Parameter optimization, also referred to as design closure, is imperative in the development of modern antennas. Theoretical considerations along with rough dimension adjustment through supervised parameter sweeping can only yield initial designs that need to be further tuned to boost the antenna performance. The major challenges include handling of multi-dimensional parameter spaces while accounting for several objectives and constraints. Due to complexity of modern antenna topologies, parameter interactions are often involved, leading to multiple local optima as well as difficulties in identifying decent initial designs that can be improved using local procedures. In such cases, global search is required, which is an expensive endeavor, especially if full-wave electromagnetic (EM) analysis is employed for antenna evaluation. This paper proposes a novel technique accommodating the search space exploration using local kriging surrogates and local improvement by means of trust-region gradient search. Computational efficiency of the process is achieved by constructing the metamodels over appropriately defined affine subspaces and incorporation of coarse-mesh EM simulations at the exploratory stages of the optimization process. The resulting framework enables nearly global search capabilities at the costs comparable to conventional gradient-based local optimization.     A parallel tabu search for the unconstrained binary quadratic programming problem

    International audienceAlthough several sequential heuristics have been proposed for dealing with the Unconstrained Binary Quadratic Programming (UBQP), very little effort has been made for designing parallel algorithms for the UBQP. This paper propose a novel decentralized parallel search algorithm, called Parallel Elite Biased Tabu Search (PEBTS). It is based on D2TS, a state-of-the-art sequential UBQP metaheuristic. The key strategies in the PEBTS algorithm include: (i) a lazy distributed cooperation procedure to maintain diversity among different search processes and (ii) finely tuned bit-flip operators which can help the search escape local optima efficiently. Our experiments on the Tianhe-2 supercomputer with up to 24 computing cores show the accuracy of the efficiency of PEBTS compared with a straightforward parallel algorithm running multiple independent and non-cooperating D2TS processes

    Multimodal estimation of distribution algorithms

    Taking the advantage of estimation of distribution algorithms (EDAs) in preserving high diversity, this paper proposes a multimodal EDA. Integrated with clustering strategies for crowding and speciation, two versions of this algorithm are developed, which operate at the niche level. Then these two algorithms are equipped with three distinctive techniques: 1) a dynamic cluster sizing strategy; 2) an alternative utilization of Gaussian and Cauchy distributions to generate offspring; and 3) an adaptive local search. The dynamic cluster sizing affords a potential balance between exploration and exploitation and reduces the sensitivity to the cluster size in the niching methods. Taking advantages of Gaussian and Cauchy distributions, we generate the offspring at the niche level through alternatively using these two distributions. Such utilization can also potentially offer a balance between exploration and exploitation. Further, solution accuracy is enhanced through a new local search scheme probabilistically conducted around seeds of niches with probabilities determined self-adaptively according to fitness values of these seeds. Extensive experiments conducted on 20 benchmark multimodal problems confirm that both algorithms can achieve competitive performance compared with several state-of-the-art multimodal algorithms, which is supported by nonparametric tests.     Fitness sharing and niching methods revisited

    Interest in multimodal optimization function is expanding rapidly since real-world optimization problems often require the location of multiple optima in the search space. In this context, fitness sharing has been used widely to maintain population diversity and permit the investigation of many peaks in the feasible domain. This paper reviews various strategies of sharing and proposes new recombination schemes to improve its efficiency. Some empirical results are presented for high and a limited number of fitness function evaluations. Finally, the study compares the sharing method with other niching techniques

    Force-imitated particle swarm optimization using the near-neighbor effect for locating multiple optima

All rights reserved.Multimodal optimization problems pose a great challenge of locating multiple optima simultaneously in the search space to the particle swarm optimization (PSO) community. In this paper, the motion principle of particles in PSO is extended by using the near-neighbor effect in mechanical theory, which is a universal phenomenon in nature and society. In the proposed near-neighbor effect based force-imitated PSO (NN-FPSO) algorithm, each particle explores the promising regions where it resides under the composite forces produced by the “near-neighbor attractor” and “near-neighbor repeller”, which are selected from the set of memorized personal best positions and the current swarm based on the principles of “superior-and-nearer” and “inferior-and-nearer”, respectively. These two forces pull and push a particle to search for the nearby optimum. Hence, particles can simultaneously locate multiple optima quickly and precisely. Experiments are carried out to investigate the performance of NN-FPSO in comparison with a number of state-of-the-art PSO algorithms for locating multiple optima over a series of multimodal benchmark test functions.
