Access to basic education in Ghana: the evidence and the issues
This review of educational development in Ghana has been developed to explore key issues in access to education, capture recent research, and to identify gaps in knowledge and understanding. This critical analytic review provides the basis for research which seeks to identify children who are excluded from basic education, establish the causes of their exclusion, and identify ways of ensuring that all children comnplete a full cycle of basic education successfully
Semantic Sort: A Supervised Approach to Personalized Semantic Relatedness
We propose and study a novel supervised approach to learning statistical
semantic relatedness models from subjectively annotated training examples. The
proposed semantic model consists of parameterized co-occurrence statistics
associated with textual units of a large background knowledge corpus. We
present an efficient algorithm for learning such semantic models from a
training sample of relatedness preferences. Our method is corpus independent
and can essentially rely on any sufficiently large (unstructured) collection of
coherent texts. Moreover, the approach facilitates the fitting of semantic
models for specific users or groups of users. We present the results of
extensive range of experiments from small to large scale, indicating that the

Vision-related quality of life and symptom perception change over time in newly-diagnosed primary open angle glaucoma patients.
To evaluate the change over time of vision-related quality of life (QoL) and glaucoma symptoms in a population of newly-diagnosed primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) patients. Multicenter, prospective study. Consecutive newly-diagnosed POAG patients were enrolled and followed-up for one year. Follow-up visits were scheduled at 6 and 12 months from baseline. At each visit, vision-related QoL and glaucoma-related symptoms were assessed by the means of the 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ-25) and the Glaucoma Symptom Scale (GSS), respectively. Trends over time for NEI-VFQ-25 and GSS scores were evaluated with longitudinal linear mixed models. One-hundred seventy-eight patients were included in the analysis. At baseline, early to moderate glaucoma stages were associated with higher scores for most GSS and NEI-VFQ-25 items, while lower best-corrected visual acuity was associated with lower scores for 4 of the 12 NEI-VFQ-25 items. During the follow-up, all the GSS scores, the NEI-VFQ-25 total score, and 7 of the 12 NEI-VFQ-25 scores significantly improved (p < 0.05). In multivariate model, higher increases of most GSS and NEI-VFQ-25 scores were modeled in patients with low scores at baseline. Vision-related QoL and glaucoma-related symptom perception significantly improved during the one-year follow-up in this population of newly diagnosed POAG patients
Better Choices: Charter Incubation as a Strategy for Improving the Charter School Sector
The twenty years since Minnesota passed the nation's first charter school law have seen a great expansion in school choice, with charters operating in all but ten states and enrolling nearly two million students nationwide. Yet while parents now enjoy more schooling options for their children, a disappointing number of charter schools fail to provide excellent educations. As an authorizer of charter schools in Ohio, we struggle daily with birthing and growing high-quality charter schools -- which is why we find promising and underutilized approaches like charter incubation so appealing
The social economics of ethical consumption: Theoretical considerations and empirical evidence
Recent years have seen rising discussion of ethical consumption as a means of stemming global warming, challenging unsavory business practices, and promoting other pro-social goals. This paper first lays out a conceptual framework for understanding the spread of ethical consumption, in which heterogeneous preferences and sensitivity to social norms feature centrally. It then presents empirical evidence from a well-known nationally representative survey on factors associated with tendencies to buy ethically. It is found that, ceteris paribus, people are more likely to buy ethically when others around them do too, consistent with a role of social norms in promoting ethical-consumption behaviors.
Students today, teachers tomorrow ? identifying constraints on the provision of Education
With an estimated 115 million children not attending primary school in the developing world, increasing access to education is critical. Resource constraints limit the effectiveness of demand-based subsidies. This paper focuses on the importance of a supply-side factor -- the availability of low-cost teachers -- and the resulting ability of the market to offer affordable education. The authors first show that private schools are three times more likely to emerge in villages with government girls'secondary schools (GSS). Identification is obtained by using official school construction guidelines as an instrument for the presence of GSS. In contrast, there is little or no relationship between the presence of a private school and girls'primary or boys'primary and secondary government schools. In support of a supply-channel, the authors then show that, for villages that received a GSS, there are over twice as many educated women and that private school teachers'wages are 27 percent lower in these villages. In an environment with poor female education and low mobility, GSS substantially increase the local supply of skilled women lowering wages locally and allowing the market to offer affordable education. These findings highlight the prominent role of women as teachers in facilitating educational access and resonate with similar historical evidence from developed economies. Planning and Implementation of Guided Self-study in an Undergraduate Physiotherapy Curriculum in Switzerland: A Feasibility Study
Background:
Self-directed learning (andragogy) or self-determined learning (heutagogy) can be implemented in guided self-study (GSS) with the aim to foster changes in the knowledge and skills of physiotherapy students in a higher education setting. To date, there is a lack of evidence for the use of GSS in higher education for physiotherapy.
Aim:
This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of developing and implementing GSS in an undergraduate physiotherapy educational program in Switzerland. In addition, the effectiveness of GSS in bringing changes in knowledge and skills was assessed.
Method:
Full-time undergraduate physiotherapy students (n = 49) from the third semester volunteered in this feasibility study. Students were randomly allocated into a GSS group or a control group (CG) in the period from October to November 2019. The GSS group prepared a total of 3 clinical cases. Each case was processed in an 8-day cycle. On day 1, the clinical case (ie, description of a patient and symptoms) and learning goals were provided to the students electronically. The students prepared the cases in groups from days 2 to 7. They were guided 2 times by the tutor (physical meeting and via Skype) during this preparation phase. The results of group work were presented and reflected on during a moderated plenum session (90 minutes) on day 8. The feasibility of this higher education study was operationalized as follows: exposure (“dose,” ie, the number of GSS sessions performed over 90 minutes, as well as the content of the cases and the learning objectives); students’ responsiveness, with an a priori set 100% willingness to participate on day 8; program differentiation, to illustrate differences between the content of GSS cases and the curriculum; and degree of acceptability. In addition, an assessment was made of the total scores in the objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) and written examinations, as well as the amount of GSS. Statistical analyses were conducted using an intention-to-treat approach.
Results:
All 3 GSS sessions on day 8 lasted the scheduled 90 minutes. The content of the presented cases was aligned with the learning objectives. The responsiveness of students willing to participate on day 8 was 42%. In program differentiation, no differences in content were found between the GSS presentation content and the usual curriculum content when compared with the learning aims. Objective structured clinical examination grades and written examination grades were similar for the GSS and CG. The analysis of the focus group interview showed a low degree of acceptability indicating that the students’ workload was high during the GSS period.
Conclusions:
This study showed that this GSS program for undergraduate physiotherapy students in its current form is “feasible with modification.” Modification of the study protocol (eg, better time planning in the academic calendar) is needed to improve the students’ responsiveness. Alternatively, classroom hours may be reduced to favor self-study time. Such adjustments to the timetable should allow the physiotherapy students to better prepare the clinical cases. The effectiveness of the GSS and normal curriculum on OSCE and written examination scores was similar, probably due to the observed low students’ acceptability

General Bounds for Incremental Maximization
We propose a theoretical framework to capture incremental solutions to
cardinality constrained maximization problems. The defining characteristic of
our framework is that the cardinality/support of the solution is bounded by a
value that grows over time, and we allow the solution to be
extended one element at a time. We investigate the best-possible competitive
ratio of such an incremental solution, i.e., the worst ratio over all
between the incremental solution after steps and an optimum solution of
cardinality . We define a large class of problems that contains many
important cardinality constrained maximization problems like maximum matching,
knapsack, and packing/covering problems. We provide a general
-competitive incremental algorithm for this class of problems, and show
that no algorithm can have competitive ratio below in general.
In the second part of the paper, we focus on the inherently incremental
greedy algorithm that increases the objective value as much as possible in each
step. This algorithm is known to be -competitive for submodular objective
functions, but it has unbounded competitive ratio for the class of incremental
problems mentioned above. We define a relaxed submodularity condition for the
objective function, capturing problems like maximum (weighted) (-)matching
and a variant of the maximum flow problem. We show that the greedy algorithm
has competitive ratio (exactly) for the class of problems that satisfy
this relaxed submodularity condition.
Note that our upper bounds on the competitive ratios translate to
approximation ratios for the underlying cardinality constrained problems.Comment: fixed typo
