Academic Supports Preferred by Academically Struggling African American Students at a Predominantly White University

Academic supports offered by Predominately White Institutions (PWIs) meet the needs of individuals who achieve standards such as high grade point averages and high standardized test scores, and who can negotiate traditional college institutions. Evidence indicates that retention and graduation rates for underrepresented minority students may be lower in comparison to White peers at the same institutions. Observations indicated that academic supports offered by a Midwestern PWI, may not provide the services preferred by African American students who struggle academically in two colleges, the College of Education and the College of Nursing. A mixed-methods design was used to determine what academic supports were known and being used by academically struggling African American students at a PWI. Survey questions and interviews focused on gaining understandings of student preferences for academic supports in a population of academically struggling African American students. These results may be used to design academic supports for struggling African American students and may be generalized to PWIs of similar demographics and socio-cultural settings. Application of the results to academic support design may improve retention and graduation rates for this student group. Students requested increased interaction with faculty, late night or 24-hour tutoring services, assistance with time management, more social media to assist with reminders about assignments and class projects, and assistance with technology and online classes. Some differences were noted between what was recorded in the literature and the results of this study in the areas of study groups, same ethnicity faculty, group membership and mentoring

The report also highlights the groundbreaking efforts underway to reverse these trends in California and close achievement and opportunity gaps for African American students.The report calls on policymakers, education leaders, and all Californians to prioritize the equity-based changes that California's Black students deserve and have been waiting far too long for. If we believe California is a land of opportunity, we must acknowledge that the current rate of progress we see is unacceptable

While this study reviewed critical theories that detail the educational challenges for African American female students, the study also interviewed women who experienced success in higher education attainment. This combined review illustrates strategies that break patterns that impede African American women\u27s efforts and based on the findings suggest approaches to improve higher education attainment

New opportunities for disadvantaged pupils: the step-up programme

In the UK, the link between low income and poor educational outcomes has been long established. The Step-Up programme, which was initiated in Northern Ireland in 2000, was conceived and developed as a specific response to the under achievement and non participation in higher education of socially and economically disadvantaged secondary school pupils.<p></p> In addition to raising educational aspirations, the programme aims to raise pupil and school performance in science in order to enable pupils to gain entry to and complete programmes of study at higher education institutions.<p></p> The programme actively involves the University, schools, industry, the local hospitals and government agencies in the delivery of a highly structured programme of academic and vocational science activities.<p></p> The pupils who have participated in the programme have achieved outstanding success with over 97 per cent progressing to universities across the UK. The retention/completion rate for students who have progressed to the University of Ulster stands at 95 per cent, which compares favourably with national and international retention rates.<p></p> The authors suggest that this level of success has been achieved through appropriate pre university preparation and post university support and they provide recommendation for the successful replication and implementation of the programme in other institutions.<p></p&gt
