    Knowledge is a critical resource for scientific, academical and technological development. In a time of fast development and growth of a massive amount of information and big data, knowledge management (KM) has a crucial role in creating knowledge from data and information. Knowledge management discipline increases its popularity among other fast-developing disciplines as Artificial Intelligence (AI). It is important to understand how fields of science and technological research and development and knowledge management integrate into each other, cooperate, and support each other. Likewise, understanding theoretical bases in the practical use of knowledge management are crucial for learning and development use. The theoretical part of the publication shortly represents knowledge management theoretical basis. It is followed by a description of the case - artificial intelligence based automated e-material formatting tool development and research accompanying the development of the tool. The result part of the publication systematically represents knowledge management aspects in the case study. There are included knowledge management aspects as components of knowledge management definition, types, theories, approaches and methods in the case study. Thereby, the publication shows the cooperation of disciplines through the scope of the case study and could be used as a sample in the study process to understand and show knowledge management and knowledge management aspects in the research and development process

    Using an essentiality and proficiency approach to improve the web browsing experience of visually impaired users

    Increased volumes of content exacerbate the Web accessibility issues faced by people with visual impairments. Essentiality & Proficiency is presented as one method of easing access to information in Websites by addressing the volume of content coupled with how it is presented. This research develops the concept of Essentiality for Web authors. A preliminary survey was conducted to understand the accessibility issues faced by people with visual impairments. Structured interviews were conducted with twelve participants and a further 26 participants responded to online questionnaires. In total there were 38 participants (both sexes), aged 18 to 54 years. 68% had visual impairments, three had motor issues, one had a hearing impairment and two had cognitive impairments. The findings show that the overload of information on a page was the most prominent difficulty experienced when using the Web. The findings from the preliminary survey fed into an empirical study. Four participants aged 21 to 54 years (both sexes) from the preliminary survey were presented with a technology demonstrator to check the feasibility of Essentiality & Proficiency in the real environment. It was found that participants were able to identify and appreciate the reduced volume of information. This initiated the iterative development of the prototype tool. Microformatting is used in the development of the Essentiality & Proficiency prototype tool to allow the reformulated Web pages to remain standards compliant. There is a formative evaluation of the prototype tool using an experimental design methodology. A convenience sample of nine participants (both sexes) with a range of visual impairments, aged 18 to 52 performed tasks on a computer under three essentiality conditions. With an alpha level .05, the evaluation of the Essentiality & Proficiency tool has been shown to offer some improvement in accessing information

    Hybrid semantic-document models

    This thesis presents the concept of hybrid semantic-document models to aid information management when using standards for complex technical domains such as military data communication. These standards are traditionally text based documents for human interpretation, but prose sections can often be ambiguous and can lead to discrepancies and subsequent implementation problems. Many organisations produce semantic representations of the material to ensure common understanding and to exploit computer aided development. In developing these semantic representations, no relationship is maintained to the original prose. Maintaining relationships between the original prose and the semantic model has key benefits, including assessing conformance at a semantic level, and enabling original content authors to explicitly define their intentions, thus reducing ambiguity and facilitating computer aided functionality. Through the use of a case study method based on the military standard MIL-STD-6016C, a framework of relationships is proposed. These relationships can integrate with common document modelling techniques and provide the necessary functionality to allow semantic content to be mapped into document views. These relationships are then generalised for applicability to a wider context. Additionally, this framework is coupled with a templating approach which, for repeating sections, can improve consistency and further enhance quality. A reflective approach to model driven web rendering is presented and evaluated. This reflective approach uses self-inspection at runtime to read directly from the model, thus eliminating the need for any generative processes which result in data duplication across source used for different purpose

    A review of augmented reality applications for ship bridges

    We present a state-of-the art analysis of Augmented Reality (AR) applications for ship bridge operation. We compiled and reviewed what type of use cases were published, what type of maritime applications have been adapted to AR, how they were prototyped and evaluated and what type of technology was used. We also reviewed the user interaction mechanisms, information display and adaptation to maritime environmental conditions. Our analysis shows that although there are many examples of AR applications in ship bridges, there is still much work that needs to be done before these solutions can be suitably adapted to commercial settings. In addition, we argue there is a need to develop design requirements and regulations that can guide the safe development of AR

    Help: defining the usability requirements of a breast cancer long-term survivorship (LTS) navigator

    Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)Long-term survivors (LTSs) of breast cancer are defined as patients who have been in remission for a year or longer. Even after being declared breast-cancer-free, many LTSs have questions that were not answered by clinicians. Although online resources provide some content for LTSs, none, or very little, provide immediate answers to specific questions. Thus, the aim involves proposing specifications for a system, the Health Electronic Learning Platform (HELP), that can assist survivors by becoming an all-inclusive resource for LTSs of breast cancer. To achieve this, relevant information from the literature was used to assess the needs of LTSs. Also, data from a study involving the breast cancer survivor’s forum project that had been filtered to include posts with mentions of features to be added to the website and usability issues encountered. To complete the actual design of the system, a synthesis of the results obtained from these two sources was performed. HELP is simple in terms of its layout and consists of a main search-bar, where LTSs are able to ask questions using their own terms and language. This navigator should not be taken as definitive solution, but instead, should be used as a starting point toward better patient-centered care

    Analysis of the usability of a preliminary design for an EDM metadata mapping tool

    Europeana aims to bring together metadata for cultural heritage objects from institutions throughout Europe, to increase their visibility and accessibility. This project requires that metadata created and stored in a multitude of different formats and variations to be normalized into a single, standard format, which is soon to be EDM. This constitutes a massive effort on the part of institutions and aggregators, and any system that can ease the process of converting millions of metadata records could be very beneficial to these cultural institutions. This research explores the usability of a potential design for a metadata mapping tool intended to assist in the creation of a mapping specification from a local schema to Europeana’s EDM format. The design incorporates five components necessary to consider when creating a quality mapping of elements. In order to ascertain usability, a prototype system was created, and a cognitive walkthrough was conducted to identify usability issues.     Scoping study of the feasibility of developing a software tool to assist designers of pedestrian crossing places

    This report is the outcome of a scoping study of how guidance can be provided for practising highway engineers in designing informal pedestrian crossing facilities. The main component of this report is an analysis by an IT consultant of a range of mechanisms for delivery of this. The study was informed by the opinions of a group of practitioners who have a direct interest in the provision of pedestrian facilities. These results are placed in context and their consequences are explored in the first part of the report
