Flexible designing of a road infrastructure example

    Get PDF
The paper presents the idea of flexible design in the construction sector. Guidelines of the evaluation of a road infrastructure were discussed based on JASPERS Blue Book. An idea of how to proceed is presented through infrastructure projects concerned with economic efficiency analysis using a flexible approach. Moreover, the issue of flexibility is presented using the POZNAN BY-PASS A2 as the example of infrastructure, to which efficiency analysis was applied to variant solutions

Real option analysis as a decision tool in oil field developments

Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, System Design and Management Program, 2007.Includes bibliographical references (p. 58-59).This thesis shows the applicability and value of real options analysis in developing an oil field, and how its use along with decision analysis can maximize the returns on a given project and minimize the losses. It focuses on how capacity flexibility, the option to change the scale of a project, can significantly add value to a project especially in situations where technical uncertainties exist in a field development. This thesis first analyzes the Sample and Rother field case study, looking at the original project team's assumptions and expectations, the key uncertainties and the final outcomes. It then offers up an alternate approach to the problem using real options analysis that would have added more value to the project. It shows that for the given case study, it would have been beneficial to obtain the option to add capacity to the field development. It also recommends the level of capacity flexibility to include that adds the most expected value to maximize gains and minimize losses for various development scenarios.by Abisoye Babajide.S.M

Flexible facility requirements for strategic planning of airport passenger terminal infrastructure

    Get PDF
Facility requirements determine how and when the capacity of airport passenger terminal facilities is adjusted over time to meet expected demand. Given high levels of uncertainty inherent in long-term airport planning, under and over provision of capacity is a recurrent risk, as conventional strategic planning methods fail to adapt dynamically to changing circumstances. This paper introduces a novel flexible capacity expansion model for airport terminals that considers simultaneously real options ‘on’ and ‘in’ systems. The model is validated for the provision of check-in facilities at Zurich Airport. Results confirm suggestions in the literature that incorporating flexibility creates planning and financial advantages over conventional alternatives. Indeed, for the case of Zurich, the financial value of the flexible alternative is approximately 5% higher than the best conventional phased plan. This also suggests that phasing developments can be carefully devised to produce satisfactory outcomes that enable ex-post application of flexibility ‘on’ systems

Real options for naval ship design and acquisition : a method for valuing flexibility under uncertainty

    Get PDF
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Ocean Engineering, September 2003.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 97-101).The United States Navy is facing a need for a novel surface combatant capability. This new system of ships must be deigned to meet the uncertainty associated with constantly changing required mission capabilities, threats, and technological advances. Flexibility in design and management will enable these systems to maximize their performance under changing conditions. Real options involve the 'right but not the obligation' to take a course of action. Real options embody the flexibility that allows projects to be continually reshaped, as uncertainty becomes resolved. This thesis seeks to identify and analyze the real options available for the design and acquisition of naval ships. This thesis also seeks to determine the value of these options and determine the best types and amount of flexibility to design into naval systems in order to maximize the value of the system over time under uncertain conditions.by Jeffrey Allen Gregor.S.M

Innovative approach for planning water infrastructure systems under uncertainty

Thesis (S.M. in Technology and Policy)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, 2013.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis. Page 75 blank.Includes bibliographical references (p. 67-74).This thesis develops a framework for a flexible design approach to support decision-making in water supply infrastructure planning. It contrasts with a conventional, deterministic planning approach that uses past data or forecasts to anticipate future needs. This thesis surveys current approaches that attempt to consider uncertainty, including scenario planning, decision analysis, sensitivity analysis, real options, dynamic strategic planning, and adaptive management. A flexible design approach builds on current approaches and explores flexibility through infrastructure size and function. The approach intends to be applicable across various water infrastructure systems. This thesis describes real world and theoretical applications of flexible design, including climate change adaptation planning for water utilities, flexible planning for water infrastructure investments, and flexibility in urban drainage systems. The proposed flexible design approach employs probabilistic and simulation methods to anticipate a range of future circumstances and identify top-performing strategies. The engine of the framework is a time-series stochastic analysis that uses simulation in a discounted cash flow Excel model. First, it identifies key inputs and performance metrics, characterizes uncertainty distributions, and defines strategies of varying flexibility. Next, it employs Monte Carlo simulation and compares strategy performance through target curves and multiple criteria analyses. Singapore's water resources system inspires the characteristics of the model. The best-performing flexible approach introduces a cost savings of 15% over a 50-year timespan. To successfully implement a flexible design approach, leaders in the profession must guide the shift to planning methods that explicitly recognize the role of uncertainty in the planning process. While some implementation barriers present difficulties, the proposed flexible design approach enables substantial cost savings and fosters a deeper understanding of a water resources system in the face of future uncertainty.by Melanie Kathleen Wong.S.M.in Technology and Polic
