Optimal Power Control for Multiuser CDMA Channels
In this paper, we define the power region as the set of power allocations for
K users such that everybody meets a minimum signal-to-interference ratio (SIR).
The SIR is modeled in a multiuser CDMA system with fixed linear receiver and
signature sequences. We show that the power region is convex in linear and
logarithmic scale. It furthermore has a componentwise minimal element. Power
constraints are included by the intersection with the set of all viable power
adjustments.
In this framework, we aim at minimizing the total expended power by
minimizing a componentwise monotone functional. If the feasible power region is
nonempty, the minimum is attained. Otherwise, as a solution to balance
conflicting interests, we suggest the projection of the minimum point in the
power region onto the set of viable power settings. Finally, with an
appropriate utility function, the problem of minimizing the total expended
power can be seen as finding the Nash bargaining solution, which sheds light on
power assignment from a game theoretic point of view. Convexity and
componentwise monotonicity are essential prerequisites for this result.Comment: To appear in the proceedings of the 2005 IEEE International Symposium

Time-Efficient resource allocation algorithm over HSDPA in femtocell networks
This paper presents a time-efficient optimal resource allocation algorithm aiming to maximize the system throughput of the single-user High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) deployed in femtocell base station. The system throughput maximization with constrained total power is rst formulated as a constrained integer programming problem. We rst prove that a two-group bit and energy allocation provides the global optimum solution in the system without multipath. We then focus on the use of the two-group allocation method over frequency selective channels. A pre-processing method was used to systematically cluster and remove channels to stop using energies over severely degraded channels with the two-group allocation approach. This improves the system throughput whilst greatly reducing the computation complexity. The proposed twogroup approach with channel removal is suitable for femtocell base station with limited signal processing capability.Accepted versio
Soft handover issues in radio resource management for 3G WCDMA networks
PhDMobile terminals allow users to access services while on the move. This unique
feature has driven the rapid growth in the mobile network industry, changing it from a
new technology into a massive industry within less than two decades.
Handover is the essential functionality for dealing with the mobility of the mobile
users. Compared with the conventional hard handover employed in the GSM mobile
networks, the soft handover used in IS-95 and being proposed for 3G has better
performance on both link and system level.
Previous work on soft handover has led to several algorithms being proposed and
extensive research has been conducted on the performance analysis and parameters
optimisation of these algorithms. Most of the previous analysis focused on the uplink
direction. However, in future mobile networks, the downlink is more likely to be the
bottleneck of the system capacity because of the asymmetric nature of new services,
such as Internet traffic.
In this thesis, an in-depth study of the soft handover effects on the downlink
direction of WCDMA networks is carried out, leading to a new method of optimising
soft handover for maximising the downlink capacity and a new power control
approach
Efficient Radio Resource Allocation Schemes and Code Optimizations for High Speed Downlink Packet Access Transmission
An important enhancement on the Wideband Code Division Multiple Access
(WCDMA) air interface of the 3G mobile communications, High Speed Downlink
Packet Access (HSDPA) standard has been launched to realize higher spectral
utilization efficiency. It introduces the features of multicode CDMA transmission
and Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC) technique, which makes radio resource
allocation feasible and essential. This thesis studies channel-aware resource
allocation schemes, coupled with fast power adjustment and spreading code optimization
techniques, for the HSDPA standard operating over frequency selective
channel.
A two-group resource allocation scheme is developed in order to achieve a
promising balance between performance enhancement and time efficiency. It only
requires calculating two parameters to specify the allocations of discrete bit rates
and transmitted symbol energies in all channels. The thesis develops the calculation
methods of the two parameters for interference-free and interference-present
channels, respectively. For the interference-present channels, the performance of
two-group allocation can be further enhanced by applying a clustering-based channel
removal scheme.
In order to make the two-group approach more time-efficient, reduction in
matrix inversions in optimum energy calculation is then discussed. When the
Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) equalizer is applied, optimum energy allocation
can be calculated by iterating a set of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. By
using the MMSE Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC) receiver, the optimum
energies are calculated recursively combined with an optimum channel ordering
scheme for enhancement in both system performance and time efficiency.
This thesis then studies the signature optimization methods with multipath
channel and examines their system performances when combined with different
resource allocation methods. Two multipath-aware signature optimization methods
are developed by applying iterative optimization techniques, for the system
using MMSE equalizer and MMSE precoder respectively. A PAM system using
complex signature sequences is also examined for improving resource utilization
efficiency, where two receiving schemes are proposed to fully take advantage of
PAM features. In addition by applying a short chip sampling window, a Singular
Value Decomposition (SVD) based interference-free signature design method is
presented
