Towards a Framework for Measuring Knowledge Management Service Productivity

    Get PDF
Knowledge management (KM) is an important strategic support service to obtain a competitive advantage, especially regarding the business processes of services companies. To justify the KM investments sustainability for the organization’s competitiveness, KM research focuses on KM success. We categorize the current KM success literature into internal and external success dimensions, and identify a gap in measuring the impact of KM services on business processes. To address the lack of measurement models and indicators, we derive a framework that seeks to measure KM service productivity based on the combination of KM success research and service productivity research. This framework contains a quantitative measurement model for tangible KM factors as well as a qualitative indicator model for intangible KM input and output factors. We propose to evaluate the framework’s rigor and relevance to enrich KM success research and to provide practitioners with strategies to measure both tangible and intangible indicators

This paper presents an overview and history of the knowledge, innovation, and entrepreneurial systems (KIES) track and the knowledge and related systems research community at the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS). This community began as a task force that examined organizational memory in HICSS-27. It has since evolved into a mini-track, a research cluster, and, finally, a full research track that encompasses research knowledge, innovation, and entrepreneurial systems. In this paper, we acquaint knowledge system researchers with a research community that has leveraged HICSS to develop a rich history of high-quality scholastic inquiry in the knowledge system, knowledge management, innovation systems, entrepreneurial systems, organizational memory, and organizational learning research areas

Knowledge has become one of the most important driving forces for business success. Knowledge management helps organizations to find, select, organise, distribute, and transfer vital information. Through a successful knowledge management (KM) organizations improve their effectiveness and gain competitive advantage. The development of KM has led to the need of identifying its critical success factors. This study identifies and discusses the critical success factors or enablers that determine the KM effectiveness within organizations, which in turn influence the total performance of the firm. Based on existing frameworks and models, this study outlines the five most important factors that are believed to be critical for an effective KM implementation. This paper also investigates the effect of knowledge management effectiveness on firm performance. The proposed research model is tested via an online survey sent to 280 medium and large sized enterprises, randomly selected, all over Greece; from those only 109 answered the questionnaire correctly. The results of the study will help organizations to understand the impact that different enablers have on the KM successful implementation and how the effectiveness of KM affect firm performance.peer-reviewe

IT Based Knowledge Capability and Commercialization of Innovations: Modeling the impacts on ambidexterity and absorptive capacity

In seeking answer to the question what role can IT based knowledge Capability play in commercialization of innovation, we looked at potential and realized absorptive capacity and ambidexterity . We posit that a firm\u27s absorptive capacity and ambidexterity (ability to explore and exploit) affect its ability to commercialize innovations. Further, absorptive capacity too can be an antecedent to ambidexterity. IT based knowledge capability (which is an instantiation of IT capability) is found to positively moderate the relationship between ambidexterity and commercialization of innovations, and also is an antecedent to potential and realized absorptive capacity. We tie the seemingly isolated bits of literature together into an integrative theoretical and tested it. We assumed the presence of necessary networks and resources that lead to absorptive capacity and ambidexterity

Knowledge management is playing a vital role for the success of organizations as it is important to all type of businesses irrespective of their nature and size. Knowledge management has proved its significance at all levels including the individual, organization and country level. In the early days, knowledge management was not considered as much important for SMEs as it was for large organizations. Nevertheless, this misunderstanding has changed and this is the main reason why this research was conducted focusing on knowledge management implementation in SMEs. This research is the authentication of previous studies done over the years by different researchers and is therefore strengthening the previous work through some modifications to suit the SME environment. This research was conducted on SMEs of Malaysia and Pakistan. Thirty SMEs were approached from each country and were selected using simple random sampling technique. Fourteen CSFs which are important for KM implementation were analyzed and their priority was also checked using the values of ‘R’, R-square. Based on those CSFs, a framework was recommended for knowledge management implementation in SMEs. Validity of framework was analyzed by using hypothesis testing through linear regression technique using SPSS and the results showed that data gathered was reliable. Personally administered questionnaire method was used as research instrument with the top management as the target audience. Reliability of data was checked by using Cronbach alpha value. Besides checking the significance of 14 CSFs and proposing a framework for knowledge management implementation, research also analyzed the level of IT implementation in SMEs of Malaysia and Pakistan, years using knowledge management, future of knowledge management, reasons for not implementing knowledge management, benefits received from knowledge management implementation and type of applications used by SMEs of Malaysia and Pakistan. These findings showed that Pakistan has advantage over Malaysia in terms of IT and KM implementation. Impact of knowledge management implementation on financial and non-financial (daily) performance is also among the findings of this research and the results showed that financial and non-financial performance improves after implementation of KM. This research provides a way forward for other researchers, authors and practitioners to further explore the implementation of knowledge management in SMEs by focusing on issues like developing knowledge friendly culture, availability of financial resources and commitment of top management

The current contribution of the hospitality industry to South Africa’s GDP is estimated at 8.7% and this is targeted to increase to 9.4% by 2015. Yet, hospitality organisations in South Africa are under increasing pressure to remain competitive. One emerging school of thought links knowledge to competitiveness. Knowledge management has been the focus of much recent research, but there are few studies that investigate the potential competitive gains of knowledge in combination with IT, and even fewer within the context of the hospitality industry. The purpose of this paper is to examine the joint and independent effects of knowledge content, knowledge processes, and IT resources on the competitiveness of hospitality organisations. A research model was developed following a review of the literature. To test the model, a structured questionnaire was developed and a survey was conducted in hospitality organisations across South Africa. 112 Hospitality organisations participated from a sample of 656. Knowledge and IT together significantly and positively influence the financial performance of hotels. Results indicated that the acquisition, conversion, protection and application knowledge processes, knowledge content, IT infrastructure quality and IT capabilities significantly and positively affect market, financial, employee and customer performance, while knowledge sharing significantly and positively affects market, financial and employee customer performance. The mediating role of knowledge application on the relationship between knowledge processes and competitiveness was confirmed. The resulting models had adjusted R2 of .210 for market performance, .226 for financial performance, .118 for employee performance and .117 for customer performance. The findings of this paper benefit the hospitality industry by providing guidance to managers of hotels in their decisions to invest in knowledge management and IT to improve market, financial, employee and customer performance. An earlier version of this study’s research model and design was presented at the 12th annual Global Technology Management Association (GITMA) World Conference held in Las Vegas in June 2011.
