Unsupervised Spoken Term Detection with Spoken Queries by Multi-level Acoustic Patterns with Varying Model Granularity
This paper presents a new approach for unsupervised Spoken Term Detection
with spoken queries using multiple sets of acoustic patterns automatically
discovered from the target corpus. The different pattern HMM
configurations(number of states per model, number of distinct models, number of
Gaussians per state)form a three-dimensional model granularity space. Different
sets of acoustic patterns automatically discovered on different points properly
distributed over this three-dimensional space are complementary to one another,
thus can jointly capture the characteristics of the spoken terms. By
representing the spoken content and spoken query as sequences of acoustic
patterns, a series of approaches for matching the pattern index sequences while
considering the signal variations are developed. In this way, not only the
on-line computation load can be reduced, but the signal distributions caused by
different speakers and acoustic conditions can be reasonably taken care of. The
results indicate that this approach significantly outperformed the unsupervised
feature-based DTW baseline by 16.16\% in mean average precision on the TIMIT

Automatic tagging and geotagging in video collections and communities
Automatically generated tags and geotags hold great promise
to improve access to video collections and online communi-
ties. We overview three tasks offered in the MediaEval 2010
benchmarking initiative, for each, describing its use scenario, definition and the data set released. For each task, a reference algorithm is presented that was used within MediaEval 2010 and comments are included on lessons learned. The Tagging Task, Professional involves automatically matching episodes in a collection of Dutch television with subject labels drawn from the keyword thesaurus used by the archive staff. The Tagging Task, Wild Wild Web involves automatically predicting the tags that are assigned by users to their online videos. Finally, the Placing Task requires automatically assigning geo-coordinates to videos. The specification of each task admits the use of the full range of available information including user-generated metadata, speech recognition transcripts, audio, and visual features
Text Summarization Techniques: A Brief Survey
In recent years, there has been a explosion in the amount of text data from a
variety of sources. This volume of text is an invaluable source of information
and knowledge which needs to be effectively summarized to be useful. In this
review, the main approaches to automatic text summarization are described. We
review the different processes for summarization and describe the effectiveness

Text segmentation in natural language processing typically refers to the process of decomposing a document into constituent subtopics. Our work centers on the application of text segmentation techniques within information retrieval (IR) tasks. For example, for scoring a document by combining the retrieval scores of its constituent segments, exploiting the proximity of query terms in documents for ad-hoc search, and for question answering (QA), where retrieved passages from multiple documents are aggregated and presented as a single document to a searcher. Feedback in ad hoc IR task is shown to beneďŹt from the use of extracted sentences instead of terms from the pseudo relevant documents for query expansion. Retrieval effectiveness for patent prior art search task is enhanced by applying text segmentation to the patent queries. Another aspect of our work involves augmenting text segmentation techniques to produce segments which are more readable with less unresolved anaphora. This is particularly useful for QA and snippet generation tasks where the objective is to aggregate relevant and novel information from multiple documents satisfying user information need on one hand, and ensuring that the automatically generated content presented to the user is easily readable without reference to the original source document
Spoken document retrieval based on approximated sequence alignment
This paper presents a new approach to spoken document information retrieval for spontaneous speech corpora. The classical approach to this problem is the use of an automatic speech recognizer (ASR) combined with standard information retrieval techniques. However, ASRs tend to produce transcripts of spontaneous speech with significant word error rate, which is a drawback for standard retrieval techniques. To overcome such a limitation, our method is based on an approximated sequence alignment algorithm to search âsounds likeâ sequences. Our approach does not depend on extra information from the ASR and outperforms up to 7 points the precision of state-of-the-art techniques in our experiments.Peer ReviewedPostprint (authorâs final draft
