The Role of Web Services at Home
The increase in computational power and the networking abilities of home appliances are revolutionizing the way we interact with our homes. This trend is growing stronger and opening a number of technological challenges. From the point of view of distributed systems, there is a need to design architectures for enhancing the comfort and safety of the home, which deal with issues of heterogeneity, scalability and openness. By considering the evolution of domotic research and projects, we advocate a role for web services in the domestic network, and propose an infrastructure based on web services. As a case study, we present an implementation for monitoring the health of an elder adult using multiple sensors and clients
Distributed Enforcement of Service Choreographies
Modern service-oriented systems are often built by reusing, and composing
together, existing services distributed over the Internet. Service choreography
is a possible form of service composition whose goal is to specify the
interactions among participant services from a global perspective. In this
paper, we formalize a method for the distributed and automated enforcement of
service choreographies, and prove its correctness with respect to the
realization of the specified choreography. The formalized method is implemented
as part of a model-based tool chain released to support the development of
choreography-based systems within the EU CHOReOS project. We illustrate our

IT-Supported Management of Mass Casualty Incidents: The e-Triage Project
Voice, analogue mobile radio, and paper have been successfully used for decades for coordination of emergencies and disasters, but although being simple and robust this approach cannot keep pace with today’s requirements any more. Emerging and established digital communication standards open the door to new applications and services, but the expected benefit needs to be carefully evaluated against robustness, interoperability, and user-friendliness. This paper describes a framework for IT-supported management of mass casualty incidents, which is currently under implementation and study. The four pillars of the concept are handheld devices for use both in daily rescue operations and in disasters, autonomous satellite-based communication infrastructure, a distributed database concept for maximal availability, and psychological acceptance research
Enhanced cell controller for aerospace manufacturing
Aerospace manufacturing industry is unique in that production typically focuses on high variety and quality but extremely low volume. Manufacturing processes are also sometimes unique and not repeatable and, hence, costly. Production is getting more expensive with the introduction of industrial robots and their cells. This paper describes the development of the Flexa Cell Coordinator (FCC), a system that is providing a solution to manage resources at assembly cell level. It can control, organise and coordinate between the resources and is capable of controlling remote cells and resources because of its distributed nature. It also gives insight of a system to the higher management via its rich reporting facility and connectivity with company systems e.g., Enterprise Resource Planner (ERP). It is able to control various kinds of cells and resources (network based) which are not limited to robots and machines. It is extendable and capable of adding multiple numbers of cells inside the system. It also provides the facility of scheduling the task to avoid the deadlocking in the process. Identity principles in the digital age: a closer view
Identity and its management is now an integral part of web-based services and applications. It is also a live political issue that has captured the interest of organisations, businesses and society generally. As identity management systems assume functionally equivalent roles, their significance for privacy cannot be underestimated. The Centre for Democracy and Technology has recently released a draft version of what it regards as key privacy principles for identity management in the digital age. This paper will provide an overview of the key benchmarks identified by the CDT. The focus of this paper is to explore how best the Data Protection legislation can be said to provide a framework which best maintains a proper balance between 'identity' conscious technology and an individual's expectation of privacy to personal and sensitive data. The central argument will be that increased compliance with the key principles is not only appropriate for a distributed privacy environment but will go some way towards creating a space for various stakeholders to reach consensus applicable to existing and new information communication technologies. The conclusion is that securing compliance with the legislation will prove to be the biggest governance challenge. Standard setting and norms will go some way to ease the need for centralised regulatory oversight
The H.E.S.S. central data acquisition system
The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) is a system of Imaging
Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) located in the Khomas Highland in
Namibia. It measures cosmic gamma rays of very high energies (VHE; >100 GeV)
using the Earth's atmosphere as a calorimeter. The H.E.S.S. Array entered Phase
II in September 2012 with the inauguration of a fifth telescope that is larger
and more complex than the other four. This paper will give an overview of the
current H.E.S.S. central data acquisition (DAQ) system with particular emphasis
on the upgrades made to integrate the fifth telescope into the array. At first,
the various requirements for the central DAQ are discussed then the general
design principles employed to fulfil these requirements are described. Finally,
the performance, stability and reliability of the H.E.S.S. central DAQ are
presented. One of the major accomplishments is that less than 0.8% of
