A Low-Cost Robust Distributed Linearly Constrained Beamformer for Wireless Acoustic Sensor Networks with Arbitrary Topology

We propose a new robust distributed linearly constrained beamformer which utilizes a set of linear equality constraints to reduce the cross power spectral density matrix to a block-diagonal form. The proposed beamformer has a convenient objective function for use in arbitrary distributed network topologies while having identical performance to a centralized implementation. Moreover, the new optimization problem is robust to relative acoustic transfer function (RATF) estimation errors and to target activity detection (TAD) errors. Two variants of the proposed beamformer are presented and evaluated in the context of multi-microphone speech enhancement in a wireless acoustic sensor network, and are compared with other state-of-the-art distributed beamformers in terms of communication costs and robustness to RATF estimation errors and TAD errors

ChordMics: Acoustic Signal Purification with Distributed Microphones

Acoustic signal acts as an essential input to many systems. However, the pure acoustic signal is very difficult to extract, especially in noisy environments. Existing beamforming systems are able to extract the signal transmitted from certain directions. However, since microphones are centrally deployed, these systems have limited coverage and low spatial resolution. We overcome the above limitations and present ChordMics, a distributed beamforming system. By leveraging the spatial diversity of the distributed microphones, ChordMics is able to extract the acoustic signal from arbitrary points. To realize such a system, we further address the fundamental challenge in distributed beamforming: aligning the signals captured by distributed and unsynchronized microphones. We implement ChordMics and evaluate its performance under both LOS and NLOS scenarios. The evaluation results tell that ChordMics can deliver higher SINR than the centralized microphone array. The average performance gain is up to 15dB

Attention-based distributed speech enhancement for unconstrained microphone arrays with varying number of nodes

Speech enhancement promises higher efficiency in ad-hoc microphone arrays than in constrained microphone arrays thanks to the wide spatial coverage of the devices in the acoustic scene. However, speech enhancement in ad-hoc microphone arrays still raises many challenges. In particular, the algorithms should be able to handle a variable number of microphones, as some devices in the array might appear or disappear. In this paper, we propose a solution that can efficiently process the spatial information captured by the different devices of the microphone array, while being robust to a link failure. To do this, we use an attention mechanism in order to put more weight on the relevant signals sent throughout the array and to neglect the redundant or empty channels

Compressive wireless arrays for bearing estimation

Joint processing of sensor array outputs improves the performance of parameter estimation and hypothesis testing problems beyond the slim of the individual sensor processing results. When the sensors have high data sampling rates, arrays are tethered, creating a disadvantage for their deployment and also limiting their aperture size. In this paper, we develop the signal processing algorithms for randomly deployable wireless sensor arrays that are severely constrained in communication bandwidth. We focus on the acoustic bearing estimation problem and show that when the target bearings are modeled as a sparse vector in the angle space, low dimensional random projections of the microphone signals can be used to determine multiple source bearings by solving an l(1)-norm minimization problem. Field data results are shown where only 10 bits of information is passed from each microphone to estimate multiple target bearings
