In this paper, a survey of the literature of the past fifteen years involving Machine Learning (ML) algorithms applied to self organizing cellular networks is performed. In order for future networks to overcome the current limitations and address the issues of current cellular systems, it is clear that more intelligence needs to be deployed, so that a fully autonomous and flexible network can be enabled. This paper focuses on the learning perspective of Self Organizing Networks (SON) solutions and provides, not only an overview of the most common ML techniques encountered in cellular networks, but also manages to classify each paper in terms of its learning solution, while also giving some examples. The authors also classify each paper in terms of its self-organizing use-case and discuss how each proposed solution performed. In addition, a comparison between the most commonly found ML algorithms in terms of certain SON metrics is performed and general guidelines on when to choose each ML algorithm for each SON function are proposed. Lastly, this work also provides future research directions and new paradigms that the use of more robust and intelligent algorithms, together with data gathered by operators, can bring to the cellular networks domain and fully enable the concept of SON in the near future

A survey on fault diagnosis in wireless sensor networks

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) often consist of hundreds of sensor nodes that may be deployed in relatively harsh and complex environments. In views of hardware cost, sensor nodes always adopt relatively cheap chips, which makes these nodes become error-prone or faulty in the course of their operation. Natural factors and electromagnetic interference could also influence the performance of the WSNs. When sensor nodes become faulty, they may have died which means they cannot communicate with other members in the wireless network, they may be still alive but produce incorrect data, they may be unstable jumping between normal state and faulty state. To improve data quality, shorten response time, strengthen network security, and prolong network lifespan, many studies have focused on fault diagnosis. This survey paper classifies fault diagnosis methods in recent five years into three categories based on decision centers and key attributes of employed algorithms: centralized approaches, distributed approaches, and hybrid approaches. As all these studies have specific goals and limitations, this paper tries to compare them, lists their merits and limits, and propose potential research directions based on established methods and theories

    Cyber-Enabled Product Lifecycle Management: A Multi-Agent Framework

Trouble free use of a product and its associated services for a specified minimum period of time is a major factor to win the customer\u27s trust in the product. Rapid and easy serviceability to maintain its functionalities plays a key role in achieving this goal. However, the sustainability of such a model cannot be promised unless the current health status of the product is monitored and condition-based maintenance is exercised. Internet of Things (IoT), an important connectivity paradigm of recent times, which connects physical objects to the internet for real-time information exchange and execution of physical actions via wired/wireless protocols. While the literature is full of various feasibility and viability studies focusing on architecture, design, and model development aspects, there is limited work addressing an IoT-based health monitoring of systems having high collateral damage. This motivated the research to develop a multi-agent framework for monitoring the performance and predicting impending failure to prevent unscheduled maintenance and downtime over internet, referred to as for cyber-enabled product lifecycle management (C-PLM). The framework incorporates a number of autonomous agents, such as hard agent, soft agent, and wave agent, to establish network connectivity to collect and exchange real-time health information for prognostics and health management (PHM). The proposed framework will help manufacturers not only to resolve the warranty failure issues more efficiently and economically but also improve their corporate image. The framework further leads to efficient handling of warranty failure issues and reduces the chances of future failure, i.e., offering durable products. From the sustainability point of view, this framework also addresses the reusability of the parts that still have a significant value using the prognostics and health data. Finally, multi-agent implementation of the proposed approach using a power substations for IoT-based C-PLM is included to show is efficacy

A New Method for Node Fault Detection in Wireless Sensor Networks

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are an important tool for monitoring distributed remote environments. As one of the key technologies involved in WSNs, node fault detection is indispensable in most WSN applications. It is well known that the distributed fault detection (DFD) scheme checks out the failed nodes by exchanging data and mutually testing among neighbor nodes in this network., but the fault detection accuracy of a DFD scheme would decrease rapidly when the number of neighbor nodes to be diagnosed is small and the node's failure ratio is high. In this paper, an improved DFD scheme is proposed by defining new detection criteria. Simulation results demonstrate that the improved DFD scheme performs well in the above situation and can increase the fault detection accuracy greatly

Cooperative fault detection and isolation in a surveillance sensor network: a case study

    Get PDF
International audienceThis work focuses on Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) among sensors of a surveillance network. A review of the main characteristics of faults in sensor networks and the associated diagnosis techniques is first proposed. An extensive study has then been performed on the case study of the persistent monitoring of an area by a sensor network which provides binary measurements of the occurrence of events to be detected (intrusions). The performance of a reference FDI method with and without simultaneous intrusions has been quantified through Monte Carlo simulations. The combination of static and mobile sensors has also been considered and shows a significant performance improvement for the detection of faults and intrusions in this context

A survey of self organisation in future cellular networks

This article surveys the literature over the period of the last decade on the emerging field of self organisation as applied to wireless cellular communication networks. Self organisation has been extensively studied and applied in adhoc networks, wireless sensor networks and autonomic computer networks; however in the context of wireless cellular networks, this is the first attempt to put in perspective the various efforts in form of a tutorial/survey. We provide a comprehensive survey of the existing literature, projects and standards in self organising cellular networks. Additionally, we also aim to present a clear understanding of this active research area, identifying a clear taxonomy and guidelines for design of self organising mechanisms. We compare strength and weakness of existing solutions and highlight the key research areas for further development. This paper serves as a guide and a starting point for anyone willing to delve into research on self organisation in wireless cellular communication networks

Adaptive Fault Diagnosis of Motors Using Comprehensive Learning Particle Swarm Optimizer with Fuzzy Petri Net

    Get PDF
This study proposes and applies a comprehensive learning particle swarm optimization (CLPSO) fuzzy Petri net (FPN) algorithm, which is based on the CLPSO algorithm and FPN, to the fault diagnosis of a complex motor. First, the transition confidence is replaced by a Gaussian function to deal with the uncertainty of fault propagation. Then, according to the Petri net principle, a competition operator is introduced to improve the matrix reasoning. Finally, a CLPSO-FPN model for motor fault diagnosis is established based on the motor failure mechanism and fault characteristics. The CLPSO algorithm is used to generate the system parameters for fault diagnosis and to improve the adaptability and accuracy of fault diagnosis. This study considers the example of a three-phase asynchronous motor. The results show that the proposed algorithm can diagnose faults in this motor with satisfactory adaptability and accuracy compared with the traditional FPN algorithm. By establishing the system model, the fault propagation process of motors can be accurately and intuitively expressed, thus improving the fault treatment and equipment maintenance of motors
