    Algorithms for distance problems in planar complexes of global nonpositive curvature

    CAT(0) metric spaces and hyperbolic spaces play an important role in combinatorial and geometric group theory. In this paper, we present efficient algorithms for distance problems in CAT(0) planar complexes. First of all, we present an algorithm for answering single-point distance queries in a CAT(0) planar complex. Namely, we show that for a CAT(0) planar complex K with n vertices, one can construct in O(n^2 log n) time a data structure D of size O(n^2) so that, given a point x in K, the shortest path gamma(x,y) between x and the query point y can be computed in linear time. Our second algorithm computes the convex hull of a finite set of points in a CAT(0) planar complex. This algorithm is based on Toussaint's algorithm for computing the convex hull of a finite set of points in a simple polygon and it constructs the convex hull of a set of k points in O(n^2 log n + nk log k) time, using a data structure of size O(n^2 + k)

    We adapt the idea of higher moment energies, originally used in Additive Combinatorics, so that it would apply to problems in Discrete Geometry. This new approach leads to a variety of new results, such as (i) Improved bounds for the problem of distinct distances with local properties. (ii) Improved bounds for problems involving expanding polynomials in R[x,y]{\mathbb R}[x,y] (Elekes-Ronyai type bounds) when one or two of the sets have structure. Higher moment energies seem to be related to additional problems in Discrete Geometry, to lead to new elegant theory, and to raise new questions

    Replacement Paths via Row Minima of Concise Matrices

    Matrix MM is {\em kk-concise} if the finite entries of each column of MM consist of kk or less intervals of identical numbers. We give an O(n+m)O(n+m)-time algorithm to compute the row minima of any O(1)O(1)-concise n×mn\times m matrix. Our algorithm yields the first O(n+m)O(n+m)-time reductions from the replacement-paths problem on an nn-node mm-edge undirected graph (respectively, directed acyclic graph) to the single-source shortest-paths problem on an O(n)O(n)-node O(m)O(m)-edge undirected graph (respectively, directed acyclic graph). That is, we prove that the replacement-paths problem is no harder than the single-source shortest-paths problem on undirected graphs and directed acyclic graphs. Moreover, our linear-time reductions lead to the first O(n+m)O(n+m)-time algorithms for the replacement-paths problem on the following classes of nn-node mm-edge graphs (1) undirected graphs in the word-RAM model of computation, (2) undirected planar graphs, (3) undirected minor-closed graphs, and (4) directed acyclic graphs.Comment: 23 pages, 1 table, 9 figures, accepted to SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematic
