Promote-IT: An efficient Real-Time Tertiary-Storage Scheduler
Promote-IT is an efficient heuristic scheduler that provides QoS guarantees for accessing data from tertiary storage. It can deal with a wide variety of requests and jukebox hardware. It provides short response and confirmation times, and makes good use of the jukebox resources. It separates the scheduling and dispatching functionality and effectively uses this separation to dispatch tasks earlier than scheduled, provided that the resource constraints are respected and no task misses its deadline. To prove the efficiency of Promote-IT we implemented alternative schedulers based on different scheduling models and scheduling paradigms. The evaluation shows that Promote-IT performs better than the other heuristic schedulers. Additionally, Promote-IT provides response-times near the optimum in cases where the optimal scheduler can be computed
Implementing and Evaluating Jukebox Schedulers Using JukeTools
Scheduling jukebox resources is important to build efficient and flexible hierarchical storage systems. JukeTools is a toolbox that helps in the complex tasks of implementing and evaluating jukebox schedulers. It allows the fast development of jukebox schedulers. The schedulers can be tested in numerous environments, both real and simulated types. JukeTools helps the developer to easily detect errors in the schedules. Analyzer tools create detailed reports on the behavior and performance of any of the scheduler, and provide comparisons between different schedulers. This paper describes the functionality offered by JukeTools, with special emphasis on how the toolbox can be used to develop jukebox schedulers
Clockwise: a mixed-media file system
This paper presents Clockwise, a mixed-media file system. The primary goal of Clockwise is to provide a storage architecture that supports the storage and retrieval of best-effort and real-time file system data. Clockwise provides an abstraction called a dynamic partition that groups lists of related (large) blocks on one or more disks. Dynamic partitions can grow and shrink in size and reading or writing of dynamic partitions can be scheduled explicitly. With respect to scheduling, Clockwise uses a novel strategy to pre-calculate schedule slack time and it schedules best-effort requests before queued real-time requests in this slack tim
The use of hypermedia to increase the productivity of software development teams
Rapid progress in low-cost commercial PC-class multimedia workstation technology will potentially have a dramatic impact on the productivity of distributed work groups of 50-100 software developers. Hypermedia/multimedia involves the seamless integration in a graphical user interface (GUI) of a wide variety of data structures, including high-resolution graphics, maps, images, voice, and full-motion video. Hypermedia will normally require the manipulation of large dynamic files for which relational data base technology and SQL servers are essential. Basic machine architecture, special-purpose video boards, video equipment, optical memory, software needed for animation, network technology, and the anticipated increase in productivity that will result for the introduction of hypermedia technology are covered. It is suggested that the cost of the hardware and software to support an individual multimedia workstation will be on the order of $10,000
Distributed multimedia systems
A distributed multimedia system (DMS) is an integrated communication, computing, and information system that enables the processing, management, delivery, and presentation of synchronized multimedia information with quality-of-service guarantees. Multimedia information may include discrete media data, such as text, data, and images, and continuous media data, such as video and audio. Such a system enhances human communications by exploiting both visual and aural senses and provides the ultimate flexibility in work and entertainment, allowing one to collaborate with remote participants, view movies on demand, access on-line digital libraries from the desktop, and so forth. In this paper, we present a technical survey of a DMS. We give an overview of distributed multimedia systems, examine the fundamental concept of digital media, identify the applications, and survey the important enabling technologies.published_or_final_versio
Advanced satellite workstation: An integrated workstation environment for operational support of satellite system planning and analysis
A prototype integrated environment, the Advanced Satellite Workstation (ASW), is described that has been developed and delivered for evaluation and operator feedback in an operational satellite control center. The current ASW hardware consists of a Sun Workstation and Macintosh II Workstation connected via an ethernet Network Hardware and Software, Laser Disk System, Optical Storage System, and Telemetry Data File Interface. The central mission of ASW is to provide an intelligent decision support and training environment for operator/analysts of complex systems such as satellites. There have been many workstation implementations recently which incorporate graphical telemetry displays and expert systems. ASW is a considerably broader look at intelligent, integrated environments for decision support, based upon the premise that the central features of such an environment are intelligent data access and integrated toolsets. A variety of tools have been constructed in support of this prototype environment including: an automated pass planner for scheduling vehicle support activities, architectural modeler for hierarchical simulation and analysis of satellite vehicle subsystems, multimedia-based information systems that provide an intuitive and easily accessible interface to Orbit Operations Handbook and other relevant support documentation, and a data analysis architecture that integrates user modifiable telemetry display systems, expert systems for background data analysis, and interfaces to the multimedia system via inter-process communication
On-Disk Data Processing: Issues and Future Directions
In this paper, we present a survey of "on-disk" data processing (ODDP). ODDP,
which is a form of near-data processing, refers to the computing arrangement
where the secondary storage drives have the data processing capability.
Proposed ODDP schemes vary widely in terms of the data processing capability,
target applications, architecture and the kind of storage drive employed. Some
ODDP schemes provide only a specific but heavily used operation like sort
whereas some provide a full range of operations. Recently, with the advent of
Solid State Drives, powerful and extensive ODDP solutions have been proposed.
In this paper, we present a thorough review of architectures developed for
different on-disk processing approaches along with current and future
challenges and also identify the future directions which ODDP can take.Comment: 24 pages, 17 Figures, 3 Table
