Forman-Ricci flow for change detection in large dynamic data sets
We present a viable solution to the challenging question of change detection
in complex networks inferred from large dynamic data sets. Building on Forman's
discretization of the classical notion of Ricci curvature, we introduce a novel
geometric method to characterize different types of real-world networks with an
emphasis on peer-to-peer networks. Furthermore we adapt the classical Ricci
flow that already proved to be a powerful tool in image processing and
graphics, to the case of undirected and weighted networks. The application of
the proposed method on peer-to-peer networks yields insights into topological
properties and the structure of their underlying data.Comment: Conference paper, accepted at ICICS 2016. (Updated version
Persistent topology for natural data analysis - A survey
Natural data offer a hard challenge to data analysis. One set of tools is
being developed by several teams to face this difficult task: Persistent
topology. After a brief introduction to this theory, some applications to the
analysis and classification of cells, lesions, music pieces, gait, oil and gas
reservoirs, cyclones, galaxies, bones, brain connections, languages,
handwritten and gestured letters are shown
Genus Computing for 3D digital objects: algorithm and implementation
This paper deals with computing topological invariants such as connected
components, boundary surface genus, and homology groups. For each input data
set, we have designed or implemented algorithms to calculate connected
components, boundary surfaces and their genus, and homology groups. Due to the
fact that genus calculation dominates the entire task for 3D object in 3D
space, in this paper, we mainly discuss the calculation of the genus. The new
algorithms designed in this paper will perform:
(1) pathological cases detection and deletion, (2) raster space to point
space (dual space) transformation, (3) the linear time algorithm for boundary
point classification, and (4) genus calculation.Comment: 12 pages 7 figures. In Proceedings of the Workshop on Computational

A discrete Reeb graph approach for the segmentation of human body scans
Segmentation of 3D human body (HB) scan is a very challenging problem in applications exploiting human scan data. To tackle this problem, we propose a topological approach based on discrete Reeb graph (DRG) which is an extension of the classical Reeb graph to unorganized cloud of 3D points. The essence of the approach is detecting critical nodes in the DRG thus permitting the extraction of branches that represent the body parts. Because the human body shape representation is built upon global topological features that are preserved so long as the whole structure of the human body does not change, our approach is quite robust against noise, holes, irregular sampling, moderate reference change and posture variation. Experimental results performed on real scan data demonstrate the validity of our method
