    An emergence perspective on entrepreneurship: processes, structure and methodology

    This paper explores entrepreneurship from the perspective of emergence, drawing on literature in complexity theory, social theory and entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship is conceptualised as the production of emergence, or emergent properties, via a simple model of initial conditions, processes of emergence that produces emergent properties at multiple levels (new phenomena such as products, services, firms, networks, patterns of behaviour, identities). Conceptualisation through emergence thus embraces actors, context, processes and (structural) outcomes. This paper builds on previous work that theorises the relationship between entrepreneurship and social change. We extend that work by considering the methodological implications of relating processes of entrepreneurship to the emergence of new phenomena

    Coopetition of software firms in Open source software ecosystems

    Software firms participate in an ecosystem as a part of their innovation strategy to extend value creation beyond the firms boundary. Participation in an open and independent environment also implies the competition among firms with similar business models and targeted markets. Hence, firms need to consider potential opportunities and challenges upfront. This study explores how software firms interact with others in OSS ecosystems from a coopetition perspective. We performed a quantitative and qualitative analysis of three OSS projects. Finding shows that software firms emphasize the co-creation of common value and partly react to the potential competitiveness on OSS ecosystems. Six themes about coopetition were identified, including spanning gatekeepers, securing communication, open-core sourcing and filtering shared code. Our work contributes to software engineering research with a rich description of coopetition in OSS ecosystems. Moreover, we also come up with several implications for software firms in pursing a harmony participation in OSS ecosystems.Comment: This is the author's version of the work.     This paper examines the ‘cognitive’ and ‘societal’ aspects of the tacit knowledge transfer problem in MNCs. Based on a comparative analysis of the overseas R&D labs of US and Japanese MNCs in the UK, it examines how home-based models of learning influence MNCs’ transnational social spaces for learning and their capabilities to address the tacit knowing problem. It illustrates how the US professional ‘networks of practice’ (NoP) and the Japanese organizational ‘communities of practice’ (CoP) approaches to transnational learning unfold in practice.     Investigating co-innovation in exploratory partnerships: An analytical framework based on design theory

    Intensive innovation contexts push organizations to search for new partnerships in order to explore value creation opportunities and to access external resources. Recent literature shows that more and more partnerships are established before the object and the terms of the partnership has been determined. In such exploratory partnerships (Segrestin 2006), motivated by the prospect of joint value creation and co-innovation, partners explore and progressively construct a common project and an agreement on the sharing of tasks and outputs. In this work we investigate co-innovation dynamics of exploratory partnerships within the context of MINATEC IDEAs LaboratoryÂź (MIL). MIL comprises several industrial partners from different sectors and a major scientific partner specialized in micro-nanotechnologies. Partners of MIL share resources to explore new project ideas and co-innovation opportunities. A particularity of MIL is that all its industrial partners come from different business sectors. The diversity of agendas, competencies and design strategies exhibited at MIL allow the examination of different dimensions of exploratory partnerships: Are there different configurations of exploratory partnerships? What are the dynamics of exploration? How does the exploratory process converge?
