    Mining frequent sequential patterns in data streams using SSM-algorithm.

    Frequent sequential mining is the process of discovering frequent sequential patterns in data sequences as found in applications like web log access sequences. In data stream applications, data arrive at high speed rates in a continuous flow. Data stream mining is an online process different from traditional mining. Traditional mining algorithms work on an entire static dataset in order to obtain results while data stream mining algorithms work with continuously arriving data streams. With rapid change in technology, there are many applications that take data as continuous streams. Examples include stock tickers, network traffic measurements, click stream data, data feeds from sensor networks, and telecom call records. Mining frequent sequential patterns on data stream applications contend with many challenges such as limited memory for unlimited data, inability of algorithms to scan infinitely flowing original dataset more than once and to deliver current and accurate result on demand. This thesis proposes SSM-Algorithm (sequential stream mining-algorithm) that delivers frequent sequential patterns in data streams. The concept of this work came from FP-Stream algorithm that delivers time sensitive frequent patterns. Proposed SSM-Algorithm outperforms FP-Stream algorithm by the use of a hash based and two efficient tree based data structures. All incoming streams are handled dynamically to improve memory usage. SSM-Algorithm maintains frequent sequences incrementally and delivers most current result on demand.     Optical tomography: Image improvement using mixed projection of parallel and fan beam modes

    Mixed parallel and fan beam projection is a technique used to increase the quality images. This research focuses on enhancing the image quality in optical tomography. Image quality can be deļ¬ned by measuring the Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Normalized Mean Square Error (NMSE) parameters. The ļ¬ndings of this research prove that by combining parallel and fan beam projection, the image quality can be increased by more than 10%in terms of its PSNR value and more than 100% in terms of its NMSE value compared to a single parallel beam

    Confounds and Consequences in Geotagged Twitter Data

    Twitter is often used in quantitative studies that identify geographically-preferred topics, writing styles, and entities. These studies rely on either GPS coordinates attached to individual messages, or on the user-supplied location field in each profile. In this paper, we compare these data acquisition techniques and quantify the biases that they introduce; we also measure their effects on linguistic analysis and text-based geolocation. GPS-tagging and self-reported locations yield measurably different corpora, and these linguistic differences are partially attributable to differences in dataset composition by age and gender. Using a latent variable model to induce age and gender, we show how these demographic variables interact with geography to affect language use. We also show that the accuracy of text-based geolocation varies with population demographics, giving the best results for men above the age of 40.Comment: final version for EMNLP 201

    Evaluating semi-automatic annotation of domestic energy consumption as a memory aid

    Frequent feedback about energy consumption can help conservation, one of the current global challenges. Such feedback is most helpful if users can relate it to their own day-to-day activities. In earlier work we showed that manual annotation of domestic energy consumption logs aids users to make such connection and discover patterns they were not aware of. In this poster we report how we augmented manual annotation with machine learning classification techniques. We propose the design of a lab study to evaluate the system, extending methods used to evaluate context aware memory aids, and we present the results of a pilot with 5 participants

    Refining the use of the web (and web search) as a language teaching and learning resource

    The web is a potentially useful corpus for language study because it provides examples of language that are contextualized and authentic, and is large and easily searchable. However, web contents are heterogeneous in the extreme, uncontrolled and hence 'dirty,' and exhibit features different from the written and spoken texts in other linguistic corpora. This article explores the use of the web and web search as a resource for language teaching and learning. We describe how a particular derived corpus containing a trillion word tokens in the form of n-grams has been filtered by word lists and syntactic constraints and used to create three digital library collections, linked with other corpora and the live web, that exploit the affordances of web text and mitigate some of its constraints
