    Discourse Markers Used in Short Series Movie ‘Friends' and Its Relation with English Language Teaching

    Language is primarily speech. This paper discusses discourse markers. They are used for various purposes like to create a smooth flow of thoughts and to make the interlocutors easily understand. This way is supposed to be handy in improving the speaking ability. The data were collected from a sitcom entitled ‘Friends'. They were analyzed in a descriptive and qualitative method. The data were classified and then described their function contextually. There are seventeen discourse markers encountered in sitcom. Yeah is the most discourse marker used and by the way is the least discourse marker used in the sitcom. Discourse markers are used to make the language of conversation to be natural. They are useful for the students to learn Thus, the use of discourse markers should be inserted and learned in the textbook for high schools

    West Flemish verb-based discourse markers and the articulation of the Speech Act layer

    This paper focuses on the West Flemish discourse markers located at the edge of the clause. After a brief survey of the distribution of discourse markers in WF, the paper proposes a syntactic analysis of the discourse markers ne and we. Based on the distribution of these discourse markers, of vocatives and of dislocated DPs, an articulated speech act layer is elaborated which corroborates the proposals in Hill (). It is postulated that there is a syntactic relation between particles used as discourse markers and vocatives. The paper offers further support for the grammaticalization of pragmatic features at the interface between syntax and discourse and for the hypothesis that the relevant computation at the interface is of the same nature as that in Narrow Syntax

    Los marcadores discursivos constituyen uno de los principales centros de atención de la Lingüística actual. Su análisis desde la perspectiva de la variación diatópica y diastrática en el mundo hispánico nos permitirá obtener datos valiosos en dos ámbitos: comprobar si existen tendencias generales en las distintas modalidades de habla o si, por el contrario, hay variantes localizadas en ámbitos dialectales específicos; y saber si los rasgos sociales de los hablantes (edad, sexo y nivel sociocultural) influyen en la elección de una u otra variante para una misma función discursiva. El trabajo que aquí se presenta complementa a uno anterior (Santana 2014) en el que se ofrecían datos sobre el uso de los marcadores discursivos recopilados por Martín Zorraquino y Portolés (1999) en el sociolecto alto de Sevilla . En esta ocasión se amplía la nómina de unidades, con lo que podremos ofrecer una visión más completa del tipo y de la frecuencia de uso de las que son empleadas en la norma culta de Sevilla . Al mis mo tiempo estudiaremos si los factores de edad, sexo y época (se toman muestras de los años setenta y de comienzos de la segunda década del siglo XXI) han influido en la elección de las partículas empleadas.Discourse markers are one of the main focuses of the current Linguistics. Their analysis from the perspective of geographical and social variation in the Hispanic world will allow us to obtain valuable data in two areas: check whether there are general patterns among the different types of speech or whether, on the contrary, there are dialectal variants located in specific zones; and whether the social characteristics of speakers (age, sex and socio-cultural level) influence the choice of one or another variant for the same discursive function. The paper presented here complements a previous one (Santana 2014) where we analyzed the use of discourse markers compiled by Martin Zorraquino and Portolés (1999) in the high sociolect in Seville. This time the list of units has been increased, so that we can provide a more complete image of the type and the frequency of use of those ones which were employed in the educated norm in Seville. At the same time we shall study whether the factors of age, gender and chronological time influenced the choice of the particles used (we have taken two samples, one of them from the seventies and another one from the beginning of the second decade of the XXI century)
