    Qualitative reasoning with directional relations

    AbstractQualitative spatial reasoning (QSR) pursues a symbolic approach to reasoning about a spatial domain. Qualitative calculi are defined to capture domain properties in relation operations, granting a relation algebraic approach to reasoning. QSR has two primary goals: providing a symbolic model for human common-sense level of reasoning and providing efficient means for reasoning. In this paper, we dismantle the hope for efficient reasoning about directional information in infinite spatial domains by showing that it is inherently hard to decide consistency of a set of constraints that represents positions in the plane by specifying directions from reference objects. We assume that these reference objects are not fixed but only constrained through directional relations themselves. Known QSR reasoning methods fail to handle this information

    Unnamed locations, underspecified regions, and other linguistic phenomena in geographic annotation of water-based locations

    This short paper investigates how locations in or close to water masses in topics and documents (e.g. rivers, seas, oceans) are referred to. For this study, 13 topics from the GeoCLEF topics 2005-2008 aiming at documents on rivers, oceans, or sea names were selected and the corresponding relevant documents retrieved and manually annotated. Results of the geographic annotation indicate that i) topics aiming at locations close to water contain a wide variety of spatial relations (indicated by dierent prepositions), ii) unnamed locations can be generated on-the-fly by referring to movable objects (e.g. ships, planes) travelling along a path, iii) underspecied regions are referenced by proximity or distance or directional relations. In addition, several generic expressions (e.g. "in international waters") are frequently used, but refer to different underspecified regions

    High prevalence rates and negative outcomes of peer-based aggression and victimization during early adolescence underscore the need to identify causes and consequences of these outcomes. Limited research has examined the impact of environmental and contextual factors, such as school climate, on peer aggression and victimization. Few studies have addressed relations between school climate and specific subtypes of physical and relational aggression and victimization. Although school climate has been assessed via interpersonal subsystems (i.e., student-student and student-teacher relationships), little research has incorporated the role of student awareness and reporting of violence and safety concerns. Further, studies are needed that consider the bi-directional relations between school climate and peer aggression and victimization over time. To address these limitations, the current longitudinal study examined associations between school climate (i.e., student-student and student-teacher relationships and awareness/reporting) and peer aggression and victimization over six months among a sample of 265 middle school students

    A splitting line model for directional relations

    Directional relations are fundamental to spatial data queries, analysis and reasoning. Consequently there has been a significant amount of effort to determine directional relations between two regions. However, many existing methods do not perform well when the regions are neighboring or intertwined. In this paper we introduce a new model for directional relations which is based on a splitting line separating the two regions in question. We identify essential quality criteria for directional relation models and translate them into measurable properties of a given splitting line. We present an efficient algorithm that computes an optimal splitting line for two regions and perform extensive experiments. Our results show that the splitting line model captures directional relations very well and that it clearly outperforms existing approaches on pairs of neighboring or intertwined regions

    A semantic and language-based representation of an environmental scene

    The modeling of a landscape environment is a cognitive activity that requires appropriate spatial representations. The research presented in this paper introduces a structural and semantic categorization of a landscape view based on panoramic photographs that act as a substitute of a given natural environment. Verbal descriptions of a landscape scene provide themodeling input of our approach. This structure-based model identifies the spatial, relational, and semantic constructs that emerge from these descriptions. Concepts in the environment are qualified according to a semantic classification, their proximity and direction to the observer, and the spatial relations that qualify them. The resulting model is represented in a way that constitutes a modeling support for the study of environmental scenes, and a contribution for further research oriented to the mapping of a verbal description onto a geographical information system-based representation
