    Navigation Recommender:Real-Time iGNSS QoS Prediction for Navigation Services

    Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSSs), especially Global Positioning System (GPS), have become commonplace in mobile devices and are the most preferred geo-positioning sensors for many location-based applications. Besides GPS, other GNSSs under development or deployment are GLONASS, Galileo, and Compass. These four GNSSs are planned to be integrated in the near future. It is anticipated that integrated GNSSs (iGNSSs) will improve the overall satellite-based geo-positioning performance. However, one major shortcoming of any GNSS and iGNSSs is Quality of Service (QoS) degradation due to signal blockage and attenuation by the surrounding environments, particularly in obstructed areas. GNSS QoS uncertainty is the root cause of positioning ambiguity, poor localization performance, application freeze, and incorrect guidance in navigation applications. In this research, a methodology, called iGNSS QoS prediction, that can provide GNSS QoS on desired and prospective routes is developed. Six iGNSS QoS parameters suitable for navigation are defined: visibility, availability, accuracy, continuity, reliability, and flexibility. The iGNSS QoS prediction methodology, which includes a set of algorithms, encompasses four modules: segment sampling, point-based iGNSS QoS prediction, tracking-based iGNSS QoS prediction, and iGNSS QoS segmentation. Given that iGNSS QoS prediction is data- and compute-intensive and navigation applications require real-time solutions, an efficient satellite selection algorithm is developed and distributed computing platforms, mainly grids and clouds, for achieving real-time performance are explored. The proposed methodology is unique in several respects: it specifically addresses the iGNSS positioning requirements of navigation systems/services; it provides a new means for route choices and routing in navigation systems/services; it is suitable for different modes of travel such as driving and walking; it takes high-resolution 3D data into account for GNSS positioning; and it is based on efficient algorithms and can utilize high-performance and scalable computing platforms such as grids and clouds to provide real-time solutions. A number of experiments were conducted to evaluate the developed methodology and the algorithms using real field test data (GPS coordinates). The experimental results show that the methodology can predict iGNSS QoS in various areas, especially in problematic areas

    An audio architecture integrating sound and live voice for virtual environments

    The purpose behind this thesis was to design and implement audio system architecture, both in hardware and in software, for use in virtual environments. The hardware and software design requirements were to provide the ability to add sounds, environmental effects such as reverberation and occlusion, and live streaming voice to any virtual environment employing this architecture. Several free or open-source sound APIs were evaluated, and DirectSound3D was selected as the core component of the audio architecture. Creative Labs Environmental Audio Extensions (EAX) was integrated into the architecture to provide environmental effects such as reverberation, occlusion, obstruction, and exclusion. Voice over IP (VoIP) technology was evaluated to provide live, streaming voice to any virtual environment. DirectVoice was selected as the voice component of the architecture due to its integration with DirectSound3D . However, extremely high latency considerations with DirectVoice, and any other VoIP application or software, required further research into alternative live voice architectures for inclusion in virtual environments.     Data-Driven Simulation Modeling of Construction and Infrastructure Operations Using Process Knowledge Discovery

    Within the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) domain, simulation modeling is mainly used to facilitate decision-making by enabling the assessment of different operational plans and resource arrangements, that are otherwise difficult (if not impossible), expensive, or time consuming to be evaluated in real world settings. The accuracy of such models directly affects their reliability to serve as a basis for important decisions such as project completion time estimation and resource allocation. Compared to other industries, this is particularly important in construction and infrastructure projects due to the high resource costs and the societal impacts of these projects. Discrete event simulation (DES) is a decision making tool that can benefit the process of design, control, and management of construction operations. Despite recent advancements, most DES models used in construction are created during the early planning and design stage when the lack of factual information from the project prohibits the use of realistic data in simulation modeling. The resulting models, therefore, are often built using rigid (subjective) assumptions and design parameters (e.g. precedence logic, activity durations). In all such cases and in the absence of an inclusive methodology to incorporate real field data as the project evolves, modelers rely on information from previous projects (a.k.a. secondary data), expert judgments, and subjective assumptions to generate simulations to predict future performance. These and similar shortcomings have to a large extent limited the use of traditional DES tools to preliminary studies and long-term planning of construction projects. In the realm of the business process management, process mining as a relatively new research domain seeks to automatically discover a process model by observing activity records and extracting information about processes. The research presented in this Ph.D. Dissertation was in part inspired by the prospect of construction process mining using sensory data collected from field agents. This enabled the extraction of operational knowledge necessary to generate and maintain the fidelity of simulation models. A preliminary study was conducted to demonstrate the feasibility and applicability of data-driven knowledge-based simulation modeling with focus on data collection using wireless sensor network (WSN) and rule-based taxonomy of activities. The resulting knowledge-based simulation models performed very well in properly predicting key performance measures of real construction systems. Next, a pervasive mobile data collection and mining technique was adopted and an activity recognition framework for construction equipment and worker tasks was developed. Data was collected using smartphone accelerometers and gyroscopes from construction entities to generate significant statistical time- and frequency-domain features. The extracted features served as the input of different types of machine learning algorithms that were applied to various construction activities. The trained predictive algorithms were then used to extract activity durations and calculate probability distributions to be fused into corresponding DES models. Results indicated that the generated data-driven knowledge-based simulation models outperform static models created based upon engineering assumptions and estimations with regard to compatibility of performance measure outputs to reality

    Smart Wireless Sensor Networks

    The recent development of communication and sensor technology results in the growth of a new attractive and challenging area - wireless sensor networks (WSNs). A wireless sensor network which consists of a large number of sensor nodes is deployed in environmental fields to serve various applications. Facilitated with the ability of wireless communication and intelligent computation, these nodes become smart sensors which do not only perceive ambient physical parameters but also be able to process information, cooperate with each other and self-organize into the network. These new features assist the sensor nodes as well as the network to operate more efficiently in terms of both data acquisition and energy consumption. Special purposes of the applications require design and operation of WSNs different from conventional networks such as the internet. The network design must take into account of the objectives of specific applications. The nature of deployed environment must be considered. The limited of sensor nodes� resources such as memory, computational ability, communication bandwidth and energy source are the challenges in network design. A smart wireless sensor network must be able to deal with these constraints as well as to guarantee the connectivity, coverage, reliability and security of network's operation for a maximized lifetime.     Robust, Resilient and Reliable Architecture for V2X Communication

    The new developments in mobile edge computing (MEC) and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications has positioned 5G and beyond in a strong position to answer the market need towards future emerging intelligent transportation systems and smart city applications. The major attractive features of V2X communication is the inherent ability to adapt to any type of network, device, or data, and to ensure robustness, resilience and reliability of the network, which is challenging to realize. In this work, we propose to drive these further these features by proposing a novel robust, resilient and reliable architecture for V2X communication based on harnessing MEC and blockchain technology. A three stage computing service is proposed. Firstly, a hierarchcial computing architecture is deployed spanning over the vehicular network that constitutes cloud computing (CC), edge computing (EC), fog computing (FC) nodes. The resources and data bases can migrate from the high capacity cloud services (furthest away from the individual node of the network) to the edge (medium) and low level fog node, according to computing service requirements. Secondly, the resource allocation filters the data according to its significance, and rank the nodes according to their usability, and selects the network technology according to their physical channel characteristics. Thirdly, we propose a blockchain-based transaction service that ensures reliability. We discussed two use cases for experimental analysis, plug- in electric vehicles in smart grid scenarios, and massive IoT data services for autonomous cars. The results show that car connectivity prediction is accurate 98% of the times, where 92% more data blocks are added using micro-blockchain solution compared to the public blockchain, where it is able to reduce the time to sign and compute the proof-of-work (PoW), and deliver a low-overhead Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism. This approach can be considered a strong candidate architecture for future V2X, and with more general application for everything- to-everything (X2X) communications
