    Using cooperation to improve the experience of web services consumers

    Web Services (WS) are one of the most promising approaches for building loosely coupled systems. However, due to the heterogeneous and dynamic nature of the WS environment, ensuring good QoS is still non-trivial. While WS tend to scale better than tightly coupled systems, they introduce a larger communication overhead and are more susceptible to server/resource latency. Traditionally this problem has been addressed by relying on negotiated Service Level Agreement to ensure the required QoS, or the development of elaborate compensation handlers to minimize the impact of undesirable latency. This research focuses on the use of cooperation between consumers and providers as an effective means of optimizing resource utilization and consumer experiences. It introduces a novel cooperative approach to implement the cooperation between consumers and providers

    A theory and model for the evolution of software services

    Software services are subject to constant change and variation. To control service development, a service developer needs to know why a change was made, what are its implications and whether the change is complete. Typically, service clients do not perceive the upgraded service immediately. As a consequence, service-based applications may fail on the service client side due to changes carried out during a provider service upgrade. In order to manage changes in a meaningful and effective manner service clients must therefore be considered when service changes are introduced at the service provider's side. Otherwise such changes will most certainly result in severe application disruption. Eliminating spurious results and inconsistencies that may occur due to uncontrolled changes is therefore a necessary condition for the ability of services to evolve gracefully, ensure service stability, and handle variability in their behavior. Towards this goal, this work presents a model and a theoretical framework for the compatible evolution of services based on well-founded theories and techniques from a number of disparate fields.

    Quality of service assessment over multiple attributes

    The development of the Internet and World Wide Web have led to many services being offered electronically. When there is sufficient demand from consumers for a certain service, multiple providers may exist, each offering identical service functionality but with varying qualities. It is desirable therefore that we are able to assess the quality of a service (QoS), so that service consumers can be given additional guidance in se lecting their preferred services. Various methods have been proposed to assess QoS using the data collected by monitoring tools, but they do not deal with multiple QoS attributes adequately. Typically these methods assume that the quality of a service may be assessed by first assessing the quality level delivered by each of its attributes individ ually, and then aggregating these in some way to give an overall verdict for the service. These methods, however, do not consider interaction among the multiple attributes of a service when some packaging of qualities exist (i.e. multiple levels of quality over multiple attributes for the same service). In this thesis, we propose a method that can give a better prediction in assessing QoS over multiple attributes, especially when the qualities of these attributes are monitored asynchronously. We do so by assessing QoS attributes collectively rather than indi vidually and employ a k nearest neighbour based technique to deal with asynchronous data. To quantify the confidence of a QoS assessment, we present a probabilistic model that integrates two reliability measures: the number of QoS data items used in the as sessment and the variation of data in this dataset. Our empirical evaluation shows that the new method is able to give a better prediction over multiple attributes, and thus provides better guidance for consumers in selecting their preferred services than the existing methods do
